Match thread ~ DAFC 1-0 Rovers FT
Topic Originator: buffy
Date:   Fri 28 Aug 15:15

Apologies for the early start but the KO time has me running aroond like a heidless chicken after work, nae tea, baking cakes afore heading to EEP and on updates duty!

Hoping for some much needed goals and points tonight, Pars, which seem to be in short supply at the moment.

Gerrintaethum!

Just listened to the match preview interview with Calumn Morrison on DAFCLive. Some of the subtitles are hilarious which adds a little bit of entertaining unpredictability to the usual cliches.

You`re right about that Eck, had a good laugh when I watched the interviews last night. The converter from the spoken to the written words has a bit of bother deciphering Scottish and Irish dialects. Don`t think Kian Corbally will be too pleased about the Kim Crapali, it will maybe stick if folk are unkind.

Interesting to see how Adams does starting.

His non stop running is great to see as a sub but fitness wise I imagine he`ll need to calm it a bit tonight.

Edited to add, it's great to see Corbally back involved.

Nicholson is the ref. Sure there was controversy with him last season.
Was it the game at Starks when Stevenson assaulted Tod ?

That was David Dickinson at fault for that game.

Nicolson had a nightmare for the Ross County game last season which Lennon had a meltdown over. Also was shocking in the game against Partick Thistle at home in the playoffs

Good start. High energy and new guys look like they play the game twice the speed of those they`ve replaced.

Still the usual issue in final pass/control/shot in final third but certainly looking promising.

Rovers never been any bother so far (until that poor shot).

For me we’ve been the better team but have nothing in the box and Rudden is just wasting all the good work. Adams looks lazy and needs to get moving about. Morrison is a bit better than normal. But overall we can’t score and don’t look like it either

Is Morrison capable of beating the first man with a cross? Good positions, minimal pressure and crap delivery time after time.

Rudden - plenty effort but nothing happening for him eg Adbulai layoff that he scuffed.

I fancy we are not far off being very good if we can fix the complete inability to fashion clear cut chances.

Lobban is a great piece of business. Hope Aberdeen don`t have a recall on him.

There`s lots to like in there and we`re really solid but we`re hopeless in the final third. Hopefully it`s a quirk/confidence thing and a couple of goals will get us going. Very, very strong bench at least.

We look okay until we get into the final third….same as ever.

We have zero final ball in this team at the moment and the players are still playing the easy ball back when they have time to turn and get the head up and I include the new boys in that. A sign of low confidence and a team not sure how they are set up.

Rudden a bit ropey in first touch but putting himself about and Morrison very much offering nothing, no pace to beat a man and no final ball. Rovers sitting in when we have it and there’s no space for us thread anything through. Bray has come on although faded as half went on.

Playing like a team who perhaps just need a goal to get the confidence up but you can’t quite see whee the goal is coming from.

A good competitive game. Lots of effort but poor end product until the subs came on when we looked more dangerous. Rudden and Morrison didn’t offer much.
Andy Tod made a big difference putting their defence under pressure towards the end.
The Ox kept us in the game with two great saves.

Ruddens first touch and work rate tonight were fine. The rest though was poor.

Tod made the difference tonight in creating chances, not afraid to cut in and shoot.

Great finish from Cooper for the late winner - nothing better to end a working week! 🖤🤍

It was heading towards a pretty good 0-0 which could have been 2-2 till Cooper struck. All things considered think we deserved to edge it.

Keeper and back 4 were all excellent. That’s twice now SCH has come close to doing a John Tod.

Bray good FH then kinda disappeared.
Amade - Neat and Tidy
Oyiworth - Ok
Morrison - mixed bag

Adams - certainly puts himself about. Can’t believe a poster further up said he was lazy. He is anything but.

Rudden - eh naw…

Lobban and SCH are some players. Pity they are not ours.

Hopefully now that we have a win we can build on it.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

For anyone who doubts the work rate of Andy Tod. Please watch about one minute before the goal where Tod receives the ball on the left, distributes to the centre to receive it back on the left to play to Cooper for the goal.

Aye mibees your right. Let’s grind our players within 3 games for problems they have had in games this season.
I was just pointing out to people who have previously criticised his work rate to reconsider.
Personally I prefer each player to be individual and therefore offer something different and that is the joy of football, but each to their own.

Thought we played really well but again struggled in the final third to create opportunities at times, we really do need to find a formula where we give ourselves more chances.

But that was a good start, controlled pretty much all of the game, Abdulai and Harding look solid at the back, Fraser and Lobban, the latter in particular has been exceptional, really good acquisition.

Rudden was really poor tonight, I’ve not really seen a positive performance since back from injury.

Two excellent saves from Ox, especially the first, the second was caused by Oyirwoth trying a casual flick over a player, he’ll learn from that.

I’ve criticised Tod this season, stand by it, but credit where it’s due, he played very well tonight when he came on, maybe a drop to the bench is the boost he needs, more of that performance then I’d be happy to see him back in the lineup.

Cooper is one of those players who is a brilliant impact sub, but doesn’t shine when given the opportunity to start, think he’ll get another shot soon with Morrisons performances who continue to be poor.

Special shout out to Bray, the last two fixtures he’s started and didn’t look out of place and been one of the better players.

Table looks a bit better tonight!

Brilliant result and thoroughly deserved. Outstanding saves from Oxborough, he’s top class & the best keeper we’ve had for years.
Thought Amade and Oyirwoth were good, Adams offered 10x as much as Ollie Shaw did last week. He was involved in everything and his work rate was superb (no idea what game the guy who said he was lazy watched). Andy Tod the difference maker when he came on for me, just looked so dangerous every time he touched the ball. A straight swap for Rudden next week please. He tries hard but he’s just not very good. Morrison was hopeless again, absolutely nothing came off for him tonight.

All in all a very positive overall performance & something to build on now. I’ve said all week, we don’t look terrible.. it just wasn’t clicking. Hopefully that’s the start of it!

Really pleased tonight.

Lennon bossed it with his selection and formation. Imrie shat the bed relying on hoofball.

SCH and Abdulai were absolutely outstanding at the back. Really like the look of Lobban. Bray was brilliant early on but faded second half but did enough to show he belongs in the team. Adams looked a real handful if a wee bit raw.

The subs were all excellent. Tod set the goal up on the half way line finding Lobban. Coopers finish was excellent.

Special mention for Oxborough just doing what he does. Best keeper in the league.

Draw probably fair result there but good we were able to nick it.

Thought Abdulai and Lobban were really good (upgrade on Kearney) and Morrison and Rudden at the other end of that spectrum.

Absolutely buzzing tonight! On chances, a draw probably would’ve been a fair result overall, but with the amount of the ball we had, I always felt we had the upper hand and was delighted when the breakthrough finally came.

The longer it stayed 0-0 though, the more worried I got. I kept thinking it was going to be another Ayr or Livi, plenty of the ball without actually making it count. But Kane and Tod changed things when they came on, then Cooper did what Cooper does and sent EEP into absolute raptures.

That’s not meant as a slight on Adams either. I thought he was excellent tonight and can be really proud of his performance. He’d just started to fade out of the game by the time Kane came on.

It’s already been said about Rudden, but effort is pretty much all he gives you. I’ve said on here before that I’ve never been totally convinced by him, and tonight the quality just wasn’t there. Sadly, I thought the same could be said for Morrison.

Lennon has said that if the right forward becomes available then we’re interested. If this is the formation he intends to stick with, then surely a left sided forward has to be the priority.

Don’t really want to repeat everything that’s already been said tonight. I’m just absolutely chuffed with that and hopefully it’s the win that properly kick-starts our season.

Lennons tactics were spot on tonight. Put a big physical side out against the usual Imrie team and compete…then bring on more technical players who will move the ball quicker..just look at our goal..more or less 3 passes and in the back of the net.

That was a hard-fought and deserved win against as experienced a squad as there is in the Championship. Our back line were all excellent and I`m starting to believe we can get over losing JCM and KN. A lot of the new boys will have gained valuable experience of how hard you have to fight to get points in this league. We seem to well covered all over the pitch now except for having more threat in attack. Maybe somebody in the Scott Tiffoney mould. Over to you NL, 6 days to go so no pressure.

Once we beat Arbroath and Queens Park to build on the momentum of tonight, then rag doll Morton right at the back of it, we might very well be top of the league by 5pm on the 19th of Sept.

Thoughts on tonight,
Dylan Lobban immense.
Harding is a rolls Royce of a centre half, unbelievable the kid is only 20.
Adams strikes fear into centre halves - confirmed.
Zak Rudden, unbelievable he can call himself a professional footballer and not be lying about it.
Joshy Cooper - needs to start the next 3 at least.

Amade - been superb all season so far.
Abdulai - best centre half in the league
A. Tod - looked great off the bench tonight, I’d keep him there for the next few though.
Fraser - not as dangerous playing in a back 4 compared to when he’s bursting forward as a wing back. Love him though, he’s been great for the pars no complaints. If he could cross a ball he wouldn’t be playing for us, he’d be playing at a much higher level.
Ox - 🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍
Morrison - why are we hitting long high balls constantly to one of the smallest players on the park? Does my brain in. He maybe lacks but at least give him a chance. Giving him balls where he needs to compete in the air with anybody is bizarre.
Oyirwoth - looks very good and only going to get better. Can’t wait to see him play once he’s fully settled in.

Josn Rae had 4 really good saves.

My MOM would`ve been Abdulai or Cleal-Harding. They bossed Dowds.

It was one of the most pleasing things about scoring late on, Raith`s attempts to shrink the game ultimately scuppered any chance of a response to our goal.

We never panicked, the team just seemed to have a belief that the game winning chance would always come.

having watched the goal several times it`s really well constructed. Tod did really well on the left side bringing the ball back from the attacking half into our own half then switching the ball to the right side then moving up the left side for the ball to eventually come back to him before playing in Fraser. Gilmour was also involved early in the move near the half way line and then ran into the box to receive Fraser`s pass then lay it off to Cooper to score. Excellent team goal well worth watching back again.

Some takes from the game;

-Whether Lennon plays 3x CB’s or a back 4 we’ve found the 1st 4 defenders on the team sheet: Lobban, Abdulai, SCH and Fraser.

-2 goals in 4 league games we huffed and puffed up front. The Lobban free kick and a couple of breaking runs from the CB’s were as close as we got outside of the goal. If we are to get anyone in they need to be creative.

- On Tod, according to the BBC Lennon said “ out of form”. Well he seemed to find it again when he came on and looked the most threatening player on the pitch, must have done enough to start next week.

Josh Cooper- needs a run in the team, fail to produce and super-sub it is.

Duncan Nicholson - new laws completely ignored, throw-ins taken 10 yards higher up the pitch and didn’t deem Easton rag-dolling Amade by the shirt to the ground, right in front of him, worthy of a card. How he gets a gig in the top tier I’ve no idea.

Bray- started like a world beater and disappeared but then that seems to happen with others in that role. 1st 10 minutes showed what he’s capable of, need to get him on the ball more,I’d start him over Morrison out wide he looks more creative and that’s what we are missing.

That’s 4 Fife Derby wins in a row let’s hope it’s the kick start the season required.

If you`re a Rovers fan, you have to be fuming with that performance. Coming to a team who hadn`t won a game and had only scored 1 goal in the league, then resorting to the tedious time wasting and basically anti football stuff, would have my blood boiling especially in a derby . Then he comes out afterwards saying they played well? 😂

A draw probably would have been a fair result, but it`s nice to be on the right end of a last gasp goal for a change. Both keepers made brilliant saves, but I thought we looked the better set up side overall.

Ox is going to play a massive part if we`re going to be in and around the top four. That save was absolutely incredible.

Also, a mention for our two centre halves. They were probably both MOTM for me, with Harding maybe just edging Abdulai. Unlucky to to score from that charge down the pitch.

Our midfield were brilliant (Morrison aside), and that`s been one of our biggest issues so far this season. Bray did well too. Faded a bit after about an hour, but I`d like to see more of him.

Credit where credit is due, Andy Tod was excellent when he came on and delivered a much more complete performance. Rudden did okay, but again, coming off the left just isn`t his game. He wasn`t really effective there, although he still did okay.

Very pleased with that result. We need to build on it now, though, and start finding some consistency to get us up near the top.

This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

With older squads they will play well at the start of the season and fade away. I expect RR to do this again this season. There is quite alot of room for us to improve so we will get better as the season progresses.

Tod had a really good effect on the game but you would hope he’d do better against tiring legs in a game getting stretched. Whether he would have had that same impact from the start against a big physical raith side I’m not so sure and for the first 60 minutes we benefitted from ruddens much higher workrate off the ball.

Positive signs though that we have a good squad when the subs can make the impact they did last night. We need competition for places and no one should be getting a game by default which should keep the players fighting.

Preferred the set up last night, we were never outnumbered in the middle of the park, we just don’t quite have enough pace or creativity on the wings to create those clear cut chances.

I think Callum Morrison had a quiet game. This was partly down to some of the poor balls to him. His strengths are his ability to turn and find space. Due to his size defenders push him off the ball when he has his back to them. His final product to me is just about trying to pick out someone in the box. He tries too hard at times, so taking that split second to look up or to have looked up beforehand and know where to put the ball in the box is all thats missing from his game. Its the hardest area to work in on the park as you are looking across the park. I`m sure he will come on to his game.

India I think Morrison is struggling a bit for confidence. Far too often all he’s doing is taking a touch and passing it back. Not prepared to take a man and on a number of occasions the cross doesn’t beat the first man.

We’ve had some decent wingers over the years, unfortunately Morrison just isn’t one of them. He’ll have the occasional decent game if up against a defender who is slow and backs off but generally towards the top of this league you need that bit more.

Too easy eased off it, not got a trick or turn of pace to get away from people and final ball is generally very poor. So like last night against the better teams he’s generally a passenger.

What position do you play to get the best out of him? Is his best good enough and can he do it often enough? He’ll be on of the higher earners and he’s contracted through next season so Lennon will have to play him in a way that we can see what he was supposed to bring to the team.

I think we learned a few things last night.
Abdulai is back to his best and his partnership with Cleal-Harding looks like our strongest pairing at the back. Lobban is an upgrade, adding a bit of pace and putting in some decent crosses. Adams was lively up front and will get better with game time. Tod was great when he came on and maybe benefitted from being rested as a starter. Cooper deserves a starting berth. Morrison could do with some time out. A lot of positives from a tough game. Hopefully the start of a good run.

India I think Morrison is struggling a bit for confidence. Far too often all he’s doing is taking a touch and passing it back. Not prepared to take a man and on a number of occasions the cross doesn’t beat the first man.

Berkey - I think thats fair comment. There aren`t any positions that I think he can fill up front at the moment given the squad we have. Falkirk supporters thought he was good in League 1 but has lost some pace. He is 26/27 so not as if that can`t be recovered. He should be in his prime at this stage. I think that you need two good feet up front at championship level so that you have two options go outside or come inside. I also think he snatches at things as opposed to Cooper who has alot more composure on the ball in the final third. I think those are the areas of his game that he could work on. The movement last night was much better but despite that he had a quiet game. We are a bit automated in getting balls wide and crossing them into the box. Rudden playing wide and Morrison playing wide leaves nobody in the middle to get on the end of something when the crosses do come in. Hence the RR strolled most of the game. Cooper coming on and being more direct and being prepared to shoot just inside the box yeilded results.

“Tries too hard”

You serious ? He was murder, 3 yard pasbacks was about his limit. Never beat a man all season so far, needs dropped.

He`s been dropped! Let`s try something else.

I remember him bringing a decent save from the Raith keeper in the first half. As has been said, if you just play with one central striker you probably won`t get on the end of many crosses.

It`s a team game but we constantly pick on individuals on here.

Agree. Didn’t see him really trying anything other than a couple of touches then a backwards pass. He put one good cross in in the first half, other than that he offered very, very little. I’d even try Adams out there instead of him, his unpredictability will cause defenders problems.

He had one shot in the first half, powderpuff, which any keeper above the age of 14 would save. Plenty of the team have been praised and rightly so, not everyone played well though. It’s ok to point that out, stop being so soft.

Abdulai is an utter monster. A defensive brick wall and isn`t afraid to run with the ball. Do hope we can get him on a long term contract

Morrison had a quiet game last night, I really wish he would be given the ball more. He seems to be way more effective on the left than right in the games I`ve seen him in.

He won the Championship player of the month in April and his signing really seemed to turn our season around.

I`m backing this guy all the way, he`s not quite made the impact we wanted so far this season, but I hope he comes good.

I suppose my point here is he expends alot of energy without being effective.

I actually completely agree with adams out wide, he has alot of pace, i`d be worried about his ability to put good crosses in as of now though, but he has good potential, and seems like a passionate guy which i love

Got to agree, I think he`s a confidence player.
He gets lost sometimes and little mistakes turn into big ones, then he`s gone.
Was my first watch of the Pars last night and I honestly thought we played well against a team on a better start than us.
Thought Adams looked lively,in fact a menace, a proper handful. He`ll be a player other teams will be hating while wishing they had.
Thought the team as a whole did great though Zac struggled.Time for Kane to start instead of sub?
Andy Tod thankfully hit running and played havoc. Again maybe confidence is his thing.
3pts.

I blame Andy Rhodes for this!

Good performance, we really need to start putting more shots on goal. Great finish from Cooper, he’s really suiting coming off the bench into that role just behind strikers.

Agreed with the comments about Abdulai. I also think he’s the best defender we’ve had since Skerla.

Also think the Ugandan boy in midfield looks a real good prospect.

I don`t really agree with Morrison on effort.

He was beaten to balls that were his to win 4 or 5 times last night. He constantly turned back when he should have been taking players on. He missed a sitter that my granny would have scored (and she`s been dead for 22 years).

I really want to see Morrison succeed, but he`s not doing nearly enough to justify a start at the moment. Surely his starting place should go to Cooper.

Andrew Tod did really well off the bench last night. Time to bench Morrison and see if he can make a late impact I think.

It is really frustrating.. it feels to me like his on the cusp of being absolutely awesome.

Who knows, perhaps he is absolutely amazing in training.

I`m becoming more and more convinced it is a mental thing.

Hopefully he can get his head straightened and turn in the performances that I think he is capable of.

Players form will vary over the season and no doubt the full squad will be used to some extent. Callum Morrison fits in there too. I think he does have work to do personally, but I wouldn`t write him off 4 games into the season. There is a long way to go.

Its the old saying - its about playing to your strengths and let the opposition worry about you.

I felt Morrison looked better in the Livi game when he was putting the ball in the box early. He often tries to do more with the ball than he needs to and then loses it. If he continues to try to get it in early, and with a decent striker in the box, we will do ok.

Some folk need to relax about Morrison. We’re only four games into the season. Before his injury he was flying when he first signed, and it’s the same story with Rudden. We’ve already seen what these boys can do early on when they first signed before injury. The coaching staff work with them every single day; they know exactly what level these players can get to.

Watching Morrison in the warm‑up, he was the best finisher in the shooting drill. He’s a player who needs the ball at his feet or space to run into, he’s not built for competing in the air, and that’s fine. Play to his strengths and you’ll get the best out of him.

The team is still gelling. It’s early doors. Once Morrison gets a goal, you’ll see a big confidence boost in him, same with Rudden. They’re not miles off it; they just need that moment or Abit of luck.

I don’t think I’ve seen much on what the boys can do early on to be honest. Rudden has never stood out and Morrison had a couple of good games but since then produced very little.
