Topic Originator: buffy
Date:   Sat 5 Sep 12:07

There in spirit only / staying in my jimjams today. It’s a tad windy here in toon so god knows what it’s like up the coast in Arbroath. I’d haud on to yer hats if you’re going to the game.

Three much needed points please DAFC ~ if ye can manage to keep the ball out of our own net with the boomerang 🪃 goal kicks!

Mon the Pars!

No point beating Rovers then slipping up today. Need to start racking up the points now….

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

As much as I thought Rudden was poor last week, today could be an ideal game for him. Will be a battle & we’ll need his physicality up there. Harsh on Bray who I thought done well last week but the squad is big and if you’re disappearing in games you’ll lose your place.

I actually thought Rudden was decent last week. A couple of heavy touches but otherwise played with a bit of pace and aggression, which are things we often lack.

Rudden was mostly wide/left last week and was replace in that role by A.Tod, when he came on. It will be interesting to see how the 4 front players interact today.

Not surprised there`s no Shaw today. He`s seemed a bit passive when I`ve seen him. Wouldn`t be surprised if Lennon`s told him he`ll need to be a bit more combative if he wants to play.

Very scathing comment DBA, JTH 123`s assessment of Ollie Shaw`s performance last week is pretty accurate. Doubt if any of us would be surprised, injury or not, if the manager generally wants him to be more aggressive in his approach.

Another missed opportunity to take 3 points. Fairly poor in the second half but still the better team. Must take chances.

I wouldn`t be giving Rudden a start next week, not clear what his role is, but he isn`t offering much.

Arbroath happy with a draw at home and wasting time is embarrassing stuff tbh.

3 points against QP is a must. Can’t believe how much ground we have lost on the top teams in the 1st 5 games.

Our attack just lacks bite and Shaw and Rudden are ‘much of a muchness’! Still not delivering enough quality balls into the box though tbh. Need a total rethink up front!

The problem areas up front haven’t been addressed! We should have been out of sight today. Lennon has got the recruitment up front all wrong. So frustrating too watch us pass up another 3 points. We wo t make the top 4 this season. If we don’t Lennon should be out the door. This team has had a fortune spent on it.

Really we were well on top for most of the game. Alot more movement in the final third. Its just about converting those chances.

A good turn by Josh Cooper in the box for his goal.

That’s 3 teams already this season that have played quite or very poorly against us and have taken points from us. Ayr, Arbroath and Livi.

Cooper has single handedly won us half our league points so far.

We’re clearly not cut throat enough to be a top 3 side but at least we didn’t crumble when we went 1-0 down as has happened before.

Looking forward to Thomas coming in, as ever too nice upfront and lacking that bit of intelligence and movement to help facilitate the type of ball cooper scored from.

Hopefully Kane can start more games he’s the only one who works his socks off and has the quality to make things happen.

I think if we`d scored the first goal today we might have won by 2 or 3 clear. With them scoring first they could just continue to waste time, as they had done from the start.

We were brilliant at times in the first half, Oyirwoth was running rings around them and Abdullai was a rock. How unlucky was his scissor kick...

The team though still look a bit dysfunctional at times. Passing it back and forth across the back can be painful to watch, as you can see it`s giving the opposition time to get 11 men behind the ball. I`d like to see the midfielders/forwards (wide and central) bursting a gut to get into space so the pass can be forward. At times we`re like a rugby team where you can run forward with the ball for a bit, however passes always have to be backwards.

The choices out wide also frustrate me. Tod, Rudden and Adams (second half) when out wide don`t seem to want to just take a touch and get a cross in, or hit the byline and just drive the ball in. They don`t really think like wingers. If those crosses were expected then Shaw/Kane would know to run across their man, or the midfielders could make a late run. Some of the touches in those wide areas were quite poor.

Have to give some credit to Arbroath, they were solid and hard to break down. Ryan Flynn was excellent, just always in the right place. Michael McKenna looked more like the player from 2 or 3 years ago.

You can paint it how you want. Two points dropped against another bang average side.

6 points next 2 games has to happen. Zero excuses

Some of the football we played had Arbroatb chasing shadows. Better movement today in the final third, but what is still missing is testing the keeper and getting in some early xrosses to pressure defences.

It was a game where if Tod took his chances we’d have won it comfortably, those were the kind of chances we should be feeding Oli Shaw when he’s fit.

You have to bury the first one, looked like he stopped thinking he was offside before refocusing.

Second shot should be on target, pretty poor.

I’m not convinced on Adams and Rudden at the moment Adams puts in a shift and got himself about, he did well, but don’t recall him ever being a goal threat, he also plays like his brain is a few seconds behind his feet.

It’s hard to be too critical as we dominated the game and couldn’t have looked more comfortable. Abdulai and SCH look a great back two.

Just very frustrated, with QP and Morton next we have to be getting six points.

In comparison to this time last season, performance wise we have stepped up a notch. Midfield and defence we are really solid. I agree with NL the forwards needs to make that next step and put the ball in the back of the net.

What can I say, thoroughly enjoyed the day out, and we played brilliantly at times, but without the real cutting edge. Tod missing the 2 big chances, if we were more clinical would have won easily.

Some great football played, great to watch and if we eventually click we will be fine.

Still my favourite away ground, good fans, Arbroath I felt were dominated but eventually made a game of it.

Need a bit more urgency going forward, I lost count on the amount of times we were one one one with the defender out wide and don’t think our payers took the gamble. Far to safe passing back or sideways.

If we play like that and get a few breaks we will demolish teams. Our goal was probably our best move of the game an absolute joy to watch.

It’s still a difficult place to get a result.

Some great play in that game, first half especially. Also some frustrating play. Need a finisher in the starting 11, a classic number 9, kane or maybe thomas. Rudden the major disappointment today. Others made mistakes but also contributed a lot at times. Rudden just looks woeful.

Also, if we could work on corners it would add a lot. In past years, andy tod, norrie, skerla, geggan etc you could envisage the occasional goal from a corner. Now...? Need much more from set pieces.

Six points from next couple of games starting to feel pretty crucial.

Between the signings and a backroom staff resembling an NFL / MLB team that the owners have provided we must be absolutely hemorrhaging £££.

We did score a great goal but its like we try to score a goal like that every time we have possession. We don`t score simple goals. We carry absolutely zero threat from set pieces. We really need to mix it up.

It looks like we are guilty of trying to play too much football at times. Can’t anyone take shots from a slight distance anymore? Are we just relying on strikers to score goals? No point trying to win corners as we are crap at them and if I see us boot it out the park from kick off again I’m going to lose my mind. A lot of faffing about at the back crept in later in the game too which to me indicates a lack of ideas what to do with the ball. Not a lot of good movement at times. However, we aren’t doing a great deal wrong. Just silly things that can be addressed. Just shoot ffs!!

The positive is that we are creating chances, which is a big plus. The issue is we aren`t converting them. That`s slightly worrying when you consider we`re already in the habit of conceding soft goals.

It`s still early days, but 6 points from the next 2 games is a must if we genuinely want to challenge. We can`t afford to give teams a sizeable gap and then leave ourselves chasing the challenge late in the season like we did last year.

That said, we have considerably more strength and depth than we had last season, so there`s plenty of reason to be positive.

Hopefully, once the strikers start putting the chances away, we can mount a serious challenge because we`re playing some brilliant stuff at times. The performances are there but we just need to start being more ruthless in both boxes.

This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

Other than St J last season we were arguably the most successful club in the championship. I do wonder if that changes the mindset of most of the clubs in tge league such that they keep it tight and try to score from set pieces or breakaways. If so we need to develop an attitude of being clinical in front of goal.

What`s your definition of success? I tend to think we underperformed and underachieved (in the league) last season given the resources we had in comparison to many of the other clubs.

Well done on finishing below Arbroath and Partick Thistle in the league. 3 cup wins aside it was a poor season with that’s being invested in this side.

It was for a foul allegedly by Amade. Initially the ref played on but then stopped the play, gave the free kick and booked Amade. I was hoping to see it on the highlights as it looked harsh. We still had to defend it better though.

My definition of success is the fact that NL took on a squad of players that were not necessarily his choice and nearly relegated, and turned them around to reach the championship playoffs, beat the third placed side, reach the scottish cup final to be beaten by the best team in Scotland. In terms of the playoffs, had the number of league games not been so compressed at the end we may have faired better. In terms of resources, did we have more fiancial resources available to us? Not sure. St J had parachute payments, and I suspect PT are/were well funded. To look at this another way, would another club such as RR, Ayr Utd etc. say they had underperformed under the same circumstances?

Its obviously important to assess where we went wrong last season, but also to focus on what went well. Are we the finished article, no, but there are signs that we improving albeit we are not putting away goal scoring opportunities. I`m sure it will come.

Underperforming to me is where we finished the season before.

You can see the "foul" on the story of the match, also see Tod having his shirt pulled twice when running for a shot on goal

In the Arbroath highlights Tod is pulled off balance just as he’s about to pull the trigger. It’s exactly the same foul that Amade was rightly booked for. It’s a penalty & a booking.

That’s fitba!!

Yes Tod was pulled back as he was about to shoot. It put him off amd the ball hit the side net.

ah - the old `rule` that it can`t be a foul if the attacker gets a shot away.

I mind kane getting studs in the shins at Starks which wasn`t a foul because he got a (crap) shot away microseconds before

Lack of crosses, playing too much through the centre. We never look dangerous from set pieces and corners are a non event.

Ngwenya used to get on the end of some corners but can’t see anyone else who looks like doing so.

I play football with Michael Mckenna`s old man, on a Monday. Was talking about the game at the weekend and he was saying, how impressed he was with how Dunfermline played. If we had a decent striker, he reckons we`d be winning the league. Gave him a few kicks on the shins, for his laddies shenanigans on Saturday 😁

Just watched the highlights and it seemed a very soft foul never mind a booking……However, as you say we should have defended it better. Why was Oyirwoth the man on O’Brien ? For a big lad AO does not seem particularly commanding in the air. Surely SCH or Nuru should have picked up their biggest threat at a set piece ? Think back against Ayr when they had at least 3 or 4 free headers, 1 that led to their equalizer.

We really need to tighten up defending set pieces….Arbroath goal was right off the training ground. We also need to vary our set pieces as they just seem to be fairly routine and predictable.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.
