So...company owned by Tory donors gets 13.8 million contract for a ferry service to relieve pressure on Dover has no ferries, assets or staff. Edit government "assurances" of up to 100 million.
Cronyism or criminal activity? Or both?
My bet is after a lengthy "consultancy" period the company will fold with massive debts and not one ship will have sailed.

You are correct I read it wrong, contract 13.8, government "assurances" up to 100 million directors loans taken just before the award.

I'm not close enough to the UK to comment on this specifically, but I've noticed how a number of governments around the world are making apparent gaffs (such as this), there is a 'moment' of embarrassment, and then the policy / decision or whatever just becomes fact.
There seems to be plenty of social media commentary at the time, and obviously we shake our heads in disbelief when verbally discussing with friends / colleagues, but most of the potential 'heat' on our governments seems to get diffused by the supportive mainstream media.

The politicians sold you a great big lie. Just as Bush and Blair did, as Trump constantly does. Obama said “yes we can”, but Republicans responded, “no, you can’t” and little got done. Johnson, Farage, May and many, many others lied through their teeth on Brexit and a majority of voters in the UK decided to leave, some not for the most rational of reasons.
Caveat emptor. You made your choice.
The Brexit branded car may well be a lemon, but it is your lemon and you own it now, whether you like it or not. For sure it is going to be a bumpy ride, but to trade it back to the dealer invites humiliation, possible insurgency at home and either way, significant financial pain.
Yes, the politicians should be accountable, but they won’t be. Instead, it will be the people of Britain who pay in the long run - and not just those who voted leave. That, I am afraid, is democracy for you.

Now some might say that the incompetent f#ck wits we have running us should be held accountable and that not only was the decision to award these contracts completely farcical in the first place but it's now costing us money in legal fees as dishing out contracts to your mates might not be legal under EU laws (thank God we're leaving) but I say: France we liberated you, show some gratitude, Rule Britannia etc etc.

There will be lots of conspiracy theories around this contract.
Funny how the major provider of ships to this shell company was based in Ireland.
Maybe some political pressure put on them from the EU?
By the way it’s not unusual for transportation companies to lease vehicles:trucks, aircraft, ships. They all do it.
In any event cancelling this contract was the right thing to do.
Not Grayling’s finest hour. The guy is an embarrassment.

I believe a teensy bit should be ok for a contract.
Maybe have at least a ferry and your company actually running the ferry out of the port you say.Basic things I suppose,but I would sort of expect our government to not offer contracts to companies that don't really exist.

The government is being sued for its decision to charter firms to run extra ferries, including one with no ships, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel, said the contracts, revealed after Christmas, were decided in a "secretive and flawed procurement process".
