When even Nigel Farage can tell something is wrong, you know you've really effed up.

Our Tory overlords can give themselves a pay rise, hand millions (billions?) to their pals for PPE and an overpriced track and trace system. Yet they have no money to feed the most vulnerable children.

Yet all the media can bother to report is that National Services Scotland hired some unemployed ex-Barrhead travel contact centre workers to help with track and trace. This country is screwed.

When this pandemic is over it would be interesting if a review was done of the way it was reported by the media. But who would be able to carry out an objective review?

This is the same media reporting that one of the vaccine testers died. The tester was given a placebo and died of unrelated causes. Doesn't stop the media pushing the suggestion that that vaccine did it.

Some MP.s think the Government will do yet another U-turn as public support is growing

In Scotland, the government has made £10m available to local councils to continue to fund free school meals over the Christmas, February and Easter breaks. Local authorities that offered provision over the October school break can apply to be reimbursed.

The Welsh government has also pledged to extend free school meal provision to every school holiday until Easter 2021, spending £11m on doing so.

In England and Northern Ireland, however, the scheme will only run during term time.

Jake I.ve read, heard and seen all those issues being widely reported on across all media platforms.

Was it the media that reported that he was given a placebo and died of unrelated causes or did you do your own research to find that out?

You raise a very interesting point, jake.

Most people reading newspapers tend to only read articles where the headline grabs their interest. So, while they see most of the headlines, they skip by most stories subliminally retaining the content of the headline. That is why headlines are so important - they can have an enormous impact on public perceptions.

There.s a science to reading newspapers too. Have you heard of the "Reverse S" principle?

This is how you look at a newspaper page.

Picture a reverse S. When you look at a page, your eye will automatically go the top left of that page. It will then move 1/3 of the page down to the far right, then a further 1/3 of the page down to the far left, before your eye sweeps to the bottom right of the page and leaves the page altogether.

That is why headlines and photos are placed in certain positions to stop you doing that and keep you on the page.

On the other hand, if the editor wants a story hidden (let.s say, for example, an apology for a mistake that has been made), it will invariably be on a left-hand page, halfway down the far right column. Using the Reverse S principle, the odds are that you will miss it.

Interesting, eh?

Good on the guy :-

Hard to believe some Tory MP.s actually criticised him

A growing number of councils in England are promising to provide free meals for children of families facing hardship during the half-term school holidays.

Labour-run Birmingham City Council is one of the latest to announce it will supply vouchers - for 61,000 pupils.

Tory-run Staffordshire and Kensington and Chelsea will do the same, amid a sustained campaign led by footballer Marcus Rashford.

Reacting to criticism from some MPs, including claims of "virtue-signalling", he told BBC Breakfast: "I.ll take that all day long as long as we start to see improvements going forward for the people that are in need of it now. That.s what is important to me."

Another Conservative MP Ben Bradley, who has backed the the government, defended his position after being accused of stigmatising working class families in a tweet.

After one Twitter user described the free school meals programme as "£20 cash direct to a crack den and a brothel", Mr Bradley replied: "That.s what FSM vouchers in the summer effectively did..."

Mr Bradley said the tweet, which has since been deleted, had been "totally taken out of context".

Don.t know if this helps Towk

Every child in Scotland at a local council school can get free school lunches during term-time in primary 1, 2 and 3. ... Some children in funded childcare before starting school (early learning and childcare) can also get free meals. Children at independent schools are not entitled to free school meals.

Those who normally receive free school meals will be supported by receiving food vouchers, meal deliveries, or bank transfers, until children return to school for the start of the next school year.

Some children are also eligible to receive free school lunches after primary 3 if they receive any of the following:

Universal Credit - where your monthly earned income is not more than £610
Income Support
Income-based Job Seeker.s Allowance
Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
Both child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit and an income of up to £6,900

If you are not receiving benefits or tax credits, your child might still be eligible for a free school meal if you are experiencing financial hardship

The speaker decides what comes under EVEL and what doesn't.
Possibly since it comes under welfare this bill covered the whole UK just the devolved administrations have stepped up to the mark where the Tories have been Tory.
If the Tories had been in any danger of losing this vote you can guarantee it would have been deemed EVEL.

I can understand they don't want to create a dependency culture but we ALL have a dependency to eat. Even if a child has a feckless parent it's not like that parent will care either way. The reality is most parents in these circumstances are addicts or idiots. They're parents on benefits or zero hours incomes. It's an absolute disgrace that one of the richest countries in the world is in this situation. Maybe rather than giving big business tax breaks we should be ensuring our people are properly paid.

Playing Devils Advocate here

It actually does not cost a lot of money to feed a Family ...especially if they shop in Aldi.. Lidl .. B&M etc. Like I do

If the Parents are getting the benefits the Tory.s are saying they get then feeding their kids should not be a problem

If the Parents are feckless and spending the benefits on drink and drugs as suggested on here and failing to provide for their children then I can understand the Governments stance

So that opens up a whole new issue Perhaps an issue that many turn a blind eye to

Its a shame its the Kids who always have to suffer

Feckless is maybe harsh.

People take a lot of things for granted. Like driving or getting a bus to a cheaper shop. If you're in a flat in Oakley then where are you able to shop? You've the option of spending a small fortune getting a bus into town or spending more than you would in an Aldi at the local shop.

So you're instantly disadvantaged.

Someone on a wage could bulk buy certain things at the start of the month (assuming they have the means to easily transport it). People on benefits don't have that luxury so have to buy smaller amounts of goods, which isn't cost effective.

So they're again disadvantaged.

I remember earning sweet FA after graduating and surviving on very little but I also had the luxury of knowing I could dip into savings or could ask my parents. If you're on benefits in a flat with a pre-pay meter and draughty windows then you are buggered.

From the Beeb :-

The government is to provide free meals to disadvantaged children in England during the Christmas holidays as part of a package of support, following a campaign by footballer Marcus Rashford.

The prime minister phoned the Man Utd striker on Saturday to tell him of the new plans for £396m of support.

Rashford said it would improve the lives of nearly 1.7 million children.
The significant climbdown by the government comes after it had argued Universal Credit was enough.

The commitment will also provide meals over the Easter and summer holidays and extend an existing programme which provides activities and food in school holidays.

Support has already been announced for children in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The company at the heart of an outcry over the size of food parcels going to the poorest pupils while schools are in lockdown in England has apologised.

Marcus Rashford sought a meeting with the firm, Chartwells, after seeing a photo of the measly parcel on Twitter.

The post, by someone calling herself Roadside Mum, was picked up by news outlets which then quizzed Downing Street officials about it.

Some hours later the firm agreed the parcel had fallen short on quantity.
The mother, who posted the photo of two carrots, two potatoes and a tin of baked beans and a small range of food items, said she calculated the cost to be only about £5.

Marcus wanting a meeting with Chartwells who appear to be maximising their own profits at the expense of the kids

Shameful really

A spokesman for Chartwells, which is owned by Compass group, said it had now had time to investigate the photo.

The photo showed five days worth of food rather than the 10 days suggested, he said, but he acknowledged that it was not sufficient.

"In our efforts to provide thousands of food parcels a week at extremely short notice we are very sorry the quantity has fallen short in this instance.

This is the issue with using the private sector in these things - they need to turn a profit. People argue this makes them more efficient than the public sector. It doesn't, it makes them greedier.

I don't know the full details of this story but my understanding is they were supposed to give the equivalent of £30 of food. She's received around a fiver. What's worse is that calculation will be based on what she'd pay in a supermarket. They'll be buying in bulk and separating so getting it even cheaper.

So, the next question - which Tory MP has a pal who runs the company or has shares in them?

So they received 5 days worth of food (apparently) which cost just over a fiver, but shouldve received 10 days, I`m assuming would just be over a tenners worth, still nothing near £30... Just sums up everything about government

I have reasonable amounts of trust in those developing the vaccine. I've less faith in those coordinating it's delivery.

This is always the issue with the private sector. They'll take a public sector and make it more efficient. Typically this is by improving processes, which typically involves reducing staff and the actual delivery. So rather than empty a bin weekly, they empty it when it's full. Problem is that when it's full the rubbish blows down the street so a street sweeper then needs employed by the local authority. No skin off the private companies nose.

As the saying goes - they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Giving private companies contracts to deliver food boxes of relatively small values doesn't make much sense other than for people that can't otherwise get out.

I would liken it to the factors fee we pay for maintaining the playparks and green spaces where I live. The subbie that actually does the work gets paid 50% of the monies collected. The rest goes to the factor for profit and admin costs including the cost of collecting the fees and the effect of unpaid fees.

I would imagine that these food suppliers have multiple "supply chain partners" all with their own costs and profit expectations to the detriment of the service.

At this week’s PMQs, Keir Starmer read out the recommended contents for a food parcel taken from the government’s website. Those contents pretty much matched the photos on social media, there were 3 items on the list that were missing from the pictures.

This just underlines the lack of commitment to tackle food poverty and the dishonesty of this shambolic Tory government. They were quite happy to join in lambasting the distributors who were carrying out government policy.

How many times are the public going to buy into the lie that the private sector is better?
The most efficient way to deliver £30 of food to those in need is to pay cash directly into their bank accounts. Unfortunately that means no profit for Tory donors as it cuts out the need for vouchers to be printed, parcels to be assembled and then distributed.

Off course the Tories will have us believe that the poor can’t be trusted to spend the money on the intended purpose so we need the middle man to ensure the money is spent wisely and Tory donors can afford to renew their MCC memberships.

In addition to the meagre food parcels, once again the Tory scum have announced no free school meals during holidays, this time the Feb mid term break.

We all know that once again there will be an outcry and a U turn will follow. I’d like to say I admire their tenacity but I believe they do this intentionally in the belief that one of these times they’ll get away with it. At some point people won’t protest so much because the U turn is expected or their friends in the media will start a smear campaign on Marcus Rashford.

This Tory government utterly despise those in society who need support from the welfare state and if left to their own devices would quite happily do nothing to help, they’re not even doing the bare minimum now.

The smear campaign against Rashford has already started. This week two Tory spokesmen- their names are Julian and Nigel- expressed concern over footballers flouting the Covid regulations, with the latter becoming extremely exercised over players hugging after scoring a goal.

This piece of nonsense is not a direct criticism of Rashford obviously but an attempt- and not the first one since Covid struck- to cast footballers as an elite outwith the law in the eyes of the public. Needless to say this is exactly what the Tory Party are themselves, so it helps to find a distraction.

For the time being Rashford, who has done more for children in the UK than any Tory or Labour Minister for Children in living memory, is relatively safe. He has been careful not to politicise his campaign but as QPR says, the public clearly sees the issue as Rashford Good v Tories Bad. Such impertinence from a oik cannot go unpunished in the long term so I imagine the gutter tabloids will be raking through his dustbins to gather evidence for use at the appropriate time.

From today`s Daily Express:

``Marcus Rashford puts Premier League title pressure on Man Utd stars before Liverpool clash.

Marcus Rashford has ramped up pressure on Manchester United ahead of their trip to Anfield this Sunday, insisting anything less than a league title this season will be a failure.

….Rashford recalled getting booked early on in that win for a foul on James Milner which could well have been seen him sent off.``

Going by this report it seems the lad is a bad influence in the dressing room and a dirty player as well who carries a fair bit of luck.

Sammer, it seems like the bin rakers search has been fruitless this week and as long as that continues, the strategy is going to focus on his footballing activities to turn him into a pariah.

Every mistake will be highlighted, every challenge he makes will be analysed and every decision in his favour also. I hope he is on fire in the Euros because that for me will be the ideal opportunity to point the blame at him for any and all of England’s failings.

God forbid we beat them at Wembley and he has a stinker or he misses a penalty in the semi-final shoot out against Germany.
