Reasons why Westminster will block IndyRef
Topic Originator: DBP
Date:   Sat 8 May 12:59

so far i`ve heard:

- SNP will need to win an outright majority themselves otherwise it`s not a mandate for indyref (Greens don`t count)

- UK isn`t divided at all, it`s just that all the incumbent parties did well due to covid - a covid bounce. so the SNP win is just that the gov. of the day did well during covid and the win is not a mandate for indyref

- SNP will need to win more than 50% of the overall vote and winning the election doesn`t mean it`s a mandate for indyref

- The green vote is just SNP supporters voting tactically and isn`t a vote for the sole independence party and therefore isn`t a mandate for indyref

"Once in a lifetime poll" being quoted by some Tory nobody, who probably couldn't point out Scotland on a map!

Funny that you can't see that phrase on any official documents 🤔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

here`s another couple i`ve heard so far to justify the unionists undemocratic position:

- covid and the economic effects of covid and the covid recovery will take longer than the life of this parliament

- constitutional matters are not devolved with westminster being the arbiter - so people are only voting on constitutional matters during a uk general election and not on those elements written on devolved manifestos

`Now is not the time`.

Negotiating Brexit wasn`t the time; recovering from the Covid pandemic isn`t the time. What will be the next event to justify postponing a referendum? The Climate Crisis maybe? There will always be something more urgent and important.

Whenever this happens, there needs to be something built in that says there cannot be another one until particular events occur. I believe there should be one given Brexit but also accept we can't just keep asking.

Isn`t it a bit odd being in a union you can`t leave without the biggest member`s permission?

This will be why the "one in a generation" trope has gone quiet; the Good Friday Agreement specifies a political generation as 7 years........ specifically relating to constitutional matters on the island....

I quite often get riled when my no supporting mates claim the Indy movement is based on grievance and blame and I argue all the positive points for Independence then you read stuff like that and you can see where they're coming from.

Agreed, my support for Indy comes from a positive, forward outlook our country and a desire for us all to have more of a say in the direction we go in (which nobody can deny has been diverging from our friends in the rUK for some time now).

Either way pro Scottish and not anti anybody, be that English, welsh or norn Irish... in fact I’ve got family in all of the above places, visit them all regularly and have a great time in each place!

Absolutely. My hope would be that if an Indy Scotland was the success we want it to be it would also become the kind of place folk from rUK would want to move to.

Except for the weather. Independence can't cure that. We'll have to go down the Billy Connoly route of "no such thing as bad weather"!

Because SNP only got 30% of the Scottish electorate to vote for them.

Everybody that didn`t vote though would have voted for the snp so that puts them well over the 50%

By that logic, as the Conservatives only got 29.4% of the UK electorate to vote for them they don't have a mandate to implement any of their policies either.

Because SNP only got 30% of the Scottish electorate to vote for them

... congrats Michael, that’s kinda two reasons in one.

a)SNP are the only votes that count and you can ignore any other Indy supporting parties who had Indy in their manifesto plus
b) it’s not winning the election that provides you a mandate (like every other democratic vote we have), you’ve not even stopped at raising the benchmark to winning majority of votes cast (which would remove our PM from office) but you’ve went all the way to the majority of the population (voters and people who don’t or can’t vote)

That’s bullish Malcolm, so every one who didn’t or couldn’t vote is therefore by default a unionist - like it.

Although you could easily turn that argument on its head and say, if the Union (being so good and prosperous for us all), after 300 years cannot get the majority of the population to confirm they wish to remain in it by voting for it, then I think it’s time for a change.

Thanks for sharing LA ... The sooner we get independence better .... we will be selling water and electricity to England ..... Also read last week the cost for Westminster to re-site Trident after we get independence, will be something like 250 billion

Gordon Brown had a meeting with Prince William at Holyrood Palace today according to C4 News but they weren`t allowed to broadcast film showing Brown within the grounds of the Palace.

Gordon Brown! was he there to reiterate his love for Gaza’s goal against Scotland in the hope that William will like him? 🤣

I’d hope by now people have realised he’s one of the worst prime ministers we’ve ever had, and even though they keep wheeling him out to talk about his love of uk whenever the ‘precious’ Union at risk, nobody believed his false promises anymore

So Gordon Brown met with the Royals whilst they were on their love up tour.

Questions being asked why channel 4 film of him arriving was taken down.

Also new Scottish Labour leader attended the same meeting, allegedly, should liven up Holyrood next week!

An English victory will fully vindictive brexit and be ample proof of the superiority of the English way of life over that found on the continent.

We`re one nation of course so we can all take credit for England`s success. EUFA must be wondering how we managed to get three different teams into the finals.
