Two manifesto pledges broken today .. tax/national insurance increase .. triple lock pension suspended for a year .. add to that the end of the universal credit top up .. £80 million plus spent (we will never know the real cost) on Big Ben and then they fly the St. George flag above it .. Over the last few years they have made their millionaire friends into multi millionaires and multi millionaires friends into Oligarchs .. But hey the young, vulnerable and pensioners will subsidise it

They`ve now given a peerage to one of their donors, Malcolm Offord, which will enable him to serve as a minister in the Scotland Office. He stood as a list candidate in the Holyrood elections this year but failed to be elected.

There`s an interesting article on the BBC News website entitled `Conservatives: Who funds them and what`s in it for them?`.
Depending on the level of donation donors are invited to meetings with Cabinet ministers to discuss policy proposals etc. The numbers involved at each meeting are kept small enough so that everyone feels involved. Most donors were only prepared to talk to the BBC `off the record` and there seems to be a general consensus that the meetings are useful for an exchange of views but they don`t actually influence policy.
The only donor willing to speak `on the record` was Alasdair Locke, a Scottish businessman. He said he donated to the Tories because he felt so passionately about Scotland remaining as part of the UK.

Corbyn nearly won the first time and increased the total number of votes the second time, despite people like Starmer in his own party who were desparate for him to lose. Despite his decision not to pander to Rupert Murdoch.
He would have won his first election if the Tory entryists in his own party hadn't sabotaged him in the name of the New Labour project.
Starmer has all of the advantages of a compliant press and an establishment-friendly message, yet still he is doing much worse than Corbyn.
That's because he is uninspired and uninspiring.

The indie band, Friendly Fires, have objected to the use of their track `Blue Cassette` at the Tory Party Conference as background music when Boris Johnson appeared to make his speech. They said their permission had not been sought to use it and, if they`d intended the Tories to use it, they would have called it `Blue Bunch of Corrupt Winkers`.

`Owen Paterson, who served as Northern Ireland secretary and environment secretary when David Cameron was PM, repeatedly used his position as an MP to help two companies that were paying him, a report from the Commons standards committee says.
The committee has described this as “an egregious case of paid advocacy” and recommended that Paterson should be suspended from the Commons for 30 days. Its recommendation is almost certain to be adopted by the Commons as a whole.
The committee accepted that Paterson did not think he was doing anything wrong and that he thought his lobbying on behalf of the two companies he was working for - Randox, a clinical diagnostics company, and Lynn’s Country Foods, a processor and distributor of meat products - was in the public interest. But the report says he was still breaking Commons rules, which say MPs must not lobby on behalf of a paying client.`
It`s hard to credit that such an experienced MP and former government minister did not think he was doing anything wrong!

I can’t see a 30 day suspension will change things very much for Paterson and his ilk. He’s hardly likely to have suddenly become corrupt at the age of 64, so I would assume he has been at it for years until he was caught. After 30 days he can come back and be more careful in future. In theory he can be challenged electorally in his constituency but with a majority of over 20,000 he can probably see that threat off, if it ever happens.
On balance, I preferred the method for dealing with corruption that existed in China under Chairman Mao. A seriously corrupt official who had misused his position was executed by gun shot, and the bullet retrieved, cleaned and sent through the post to his nearest relative who was expected to pay for the price of that bullet. It was shame on the family if they did not cough up.
There’s no evidence of the concept of shame existing much in UK politics so I doubt if that method would work so well. There again, the prospect of death has been known to concentrate the mind as Paterson, a supporter of Capital Punishment, would appreciate. and it might be more effective than a 30 day suspension.

I got called for jury duty for someone whos boyfriend had (recently) been staying but they were claiming as single just at the same time as the expenses scandal hit - and the differences in the way they (MPs) and the ordinary people were being treated for essentially the same thing so angers me to this day

Boris Johnson has confirmed he stayed for free at a holiday home owned by the family of Lord Zac Goldsmith - who received a peerage from the PM in 2019.
The list of ministers` interests says the PM has "a longstanding personal friendship" with the family and "in that capacity" stayed at their place in southern Spain last month.
Downing Street had previously refused to confirm if the trip had happened.
Labour said it was "more evidence of the sleaze engulfing this government".
"It`s obvious to everyone that the prime minister is dishing out cushy jobs to his mate who pays for his luxury holidays," said the party`s deputy leader Angela Rayner.
"Yet again Boris Johnson behaves like it`s one rule for him and another for everyone else."

Interesting from the Guardian :-
While Paterson was still being paid more than £8,000 a month by Randox for 16 hours’ work, the company won more than £500m of Covid-related contracts from the government.
On 30 March 2020, Randox was awarded a £133m contract to test for Covid-19. The government said it awarded the contract without being advertised because of the urgency of the situation.
The company said Paterson was not involved in winning the contract, but 10 days later Lord Bethell, then a health minister, had a telephone meeting with Randox and Paterson to discuss Covid testing.
The government has declined to give further details of this meeting under freedom of information laws.
In October last year, the firm was awarded a £346.5m testing contract. Again, the contract was awarded without being advertised.
When Paterson was sacked from the cabinet by David Cameron in July 2014, there was some consolation: a plum consultancy role with Randox that would allow him to use his connections spanning the corporate and medical worlds and politics. Fitzgerald and Paterson shared a love for racing. It was while they were out riding that the MP raised the question of sponsorship of the Grand National. Randox has sponsored the event for the past four years.
Paterson’s wife was also on the board of the Jockey Club, which owns Aintree, along with Dido Harding, who became head of the government’s test and trace programme. Matt Hancock, the former health secretary whose West Suffolk constituency includes Newmarket, has been referred to as the MP for horse-racing and has received significant donations from the industry.

ETA - He`s going to be on a train returning from a visit to the NE of England and it won`t be back in London in time for the debate. Last week he flew back to London from COP 26 by private jet so he could attend a private party.

Sir Geoffrey Cox was little known to me before today’s main stories in the media, but that was remiss on my part. This is a man, judging merely by his entry in Wikipedia, who has amassed considerable wealth as a lawyer politician over the course of his career. His legal activities, whether on the taxation front or criminal front, have one thing in common: they invariably require him to defend the corporation against the Inland Revenue, the politician against the law, the Murdoch Press against the law, the military against the civilian and more recently the government seeking to close down parliament in defiance of the electorate.
A life spent protecting power and privilege pays rather well and has allowed him to be attorney general in the past. The great beauty of being attorney general, or even being influential in such circles, is that practically nothing you ever do can be judged illegal.

Citing two officials who were present Politico says Case “shared drinks with a group of 15 to 20 staff at his office and in the waiting room outside at 70 Whitehall in mid-December 2020.”
The Christmas gift that keeps on giving.

A party held at Conservative headquarters in London last year in breach of Covid rules was "unacceptable", a minister has said.
Grant Shapps said the Tories had disciplined four staff members and warned further action could be taken.
Speaking to Sky News, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the meeting was "disgraceful".

Tory minister Grant Shapps` staff threw a Christmas party in a Whitehall office the day London was plunged into Tier 3 restrictions, it can be revealed.
The Transport Secretary denies all knowledge of the festive do, on Wednesday December 16, where senior civil servants were "boozing and dancing" after work from 5pm.
The same day, the Government imposed Tier 3 curbs on the capital, which saw pubs closed and banned people from different households mixing.
Senior staff from the Cabinet Minister`s private office planned the rule-breaking bash and almost a dozen joined for the knees-up, sources claimed.
A spokesman for Mr Shapps, however, said the minister had "absolutely no idea" about the gathering.

The UK`s top civil servant is expected to step aside from his role leading an inquiry into Downing Street lockdown parties, after it emerged an event was held in his own office.
Simon Case had been due to report on claims Covid rules were broken at events for staff last year.
But his role was put into doubt after reports a party was held in his office, while London was under Covid rules.
No 10 is expected to issue a statement later on Mr Case`s position.
