 Life expectancy down!
Topic Originator: Parboiled
Date:   Wed 27 Sep 09:27

Males in Scotland now 76.52 compared to 77.1 a decade ago.
Wifies 80.73 was 80.75. Absolutely shocking.

Meanwhile England equivalents 79.9 and 83.6.

Must be Westminster’s fault, every other failure is!

It`s either a damning indictment of the SNP administration or it`s a damning indictment of the union. The central government at Westminster can surely see that their is an issue north of the border and should allocate extra funding to help address this issue. You know, broad shoulders of the union and all that. Having said that, are the SNP now the best option to spend that budget? All the signs are pointing to that no they are not.

‘Maybe you should think about moving.’

The time to move would be when you’re 76.51 years old 😂

I think these life expectancies are LE at birth, so it might be too late to move...

Extra funding is allocated to Scotland (although this is accidental) but is subject to the Barnett squeeze.

I remember being appalled when the response to poorer life expectancy was not to understand the reasons, or seek to improve it, but to argue for higher pensions.

Extra funding on top of that is obviously then required if one part of the union is struggling. Unionists should be arguing for that whereas those seeking independence should be more pushing for an increase in Scottish income tax take to boost spending to address this issue.

How much is needed? Who are you going to give it to? What are you going to spend it on? Where are you going to take it from?

Hate to break it to you, but life expectancy has fallen across the UK.

Another omission is that this is talking about life expectancy rather than the better measure of "healthy life expectancy". Generally speaking, Scots will live pretty healthy lives until close to their death. In the wider UK people tend to have a longer period of unhealthy living (these aren`t the correct names but hopefully makes sense!).

That doesn`t mean it`s acceptable that a person in Scotland should live 2-3 fewer years though. This has been the case since for decades now and it`s fairly obviously relative to poverty levels given places like Glasgow are lower than places like Dunfermline. Glasgow receives more funding per head than Fife yet things don`t seem to be levelling up so throwing money at the problem doesn`t work on its own.

Well MT if you are a unionist it comes from the UK central government and if extra borrowing is required to do this then that is where the money comes from. Everyone in the union will chip in a little extra via their tax to help out a part of the union that is struggling with something. That`s how a unionist would want it to work surely? When life expectancy is lower in England than Scotland I won`t begrudge that extra funding leaving Scotland to help those down south.

And they talk of raising the pension age due to greater life expectancy?

Have patience! We`ve only been in the Union for 316 years and the Tories only came up with the idea of `levelling-up` at the last General Election!

Wouldnt the drop in life expectancy be expected after the whole covid pandemic?

To be honest there are far too many old folk on the planet, we could do with getting rid of a few of them. There is not enough carers to look after them since Brexit, so they`d be better off being part of a cull when they reach 70, rather than sitting in a soiled nappy for 5 hours before a carer arrives to help them

This is a similar issue to the one of drink or drug deaths in that, at its root, it is a result of poverty.

If you sort for life expectancy by level of deprivation then there was, for men in 2021, a difference of 13.7 years between the most and least deprived communities in Scotland. With the most deprived area having a life expectancy of 68.6 in Glasgow compared to 82.3 in Orkney, Scotland`s least deprived region. source (pdf) - NHS Scotland

This doesn`t just apply in Scotland either; the North East of England, for example, had a life expectancy of 77.6 years between 2017 and 2020 whilst the South East of England was 80.6 for the same period.

Tbh, it`s a pretty vicious cycle. You are poor so live in a deprived area. That area exposes you to a greater risk of antisocial behaviour and exposure to substance abuse and also means poorer opportunities. So you remain poor and bring children into this environment who are then raised with the same negative experiences and chances.

Obviously it`s not as black and white as that but that`s the reality for many people in the UK.

TOWK – this is essentially what happens already – taxpayers in Cornwall and East Anglia (and elsewhere) will pay a little bit more in tax so HMG can borrow more and send more to the Scottish Government who can then squander it or spend it wisely as they see fit.

The SG will also take money from taxpayers in Argyll and spend it in Glasgow, or from East Dunbartonshire and spend it in West Dunbartonshire.

Red Star Par is correct with one thing – the way these numbers are apparently calculated uses death rates from a “CoVid year” in the average instead of one from a “normal” year. Figures should improve next year when a CoVid year drops out of the average.

Jake – have you any evidence for your assertion “Generally speaking, Scots will live pretty healthy lives until close to their death” as it appears to contradict ONS data which suggests that ratio of HLE/LE is pretty similar across the UK? In fact, it would be alarming were this true – the inference to draw would be that as soon as you get ill in Scotland, you are a goner.

MT, details should be on the ScotPHO or Public Health Scotland websites. The latest data won`t be covered yet so it`ll probably be a couple of years old.

Don’t think Johnson and Hancock had anything do with the cull up here Busspasspar.

One of our prime culprits secured a fat pay off from her MSP career and scooted off to a cushy post with Glasgow UNI.

The other one is still raking a fat salary at Holyrood for not doing much. More interested in setting up a tax avoidance company for her outside earnings.

If I’ve missed out any others mainly responsible for clearing out covid infected old folk from Scottish hospitals and dumping them in Scottish care homes do tell
