And Labour have just suspended the whip for six months from seven mps, including John McDonnell and Rebecca Long-Bailey, after voting against the government on an amendment to scrap the two-child benefit cap!

Being in government is all about setting priorities and making choices. In opposition you can just rail about the lack of expenditure in certain areas without saying how you would finance it. We see it all the time at Holyrood. It`s hard to understand how a Labour government would not have made the abolition of the two-child rule a priority.

This is already going as I anticipated. Scottish Labour and UK Labour do NOT align yet the SLab MPs are whipped to follow the UK party. So we`ll have Labour in Holyrood saying on thing and Labour in Westminster saying another. They`re a complete mess.

One of the many reasons I can no longer vote for Labour, they talk a good game in opposition, but every time that they have had a chance to do something that will help alleviate poverty they prove themselves to be the red wing of the Conservative Party

Exactly …and the weird thing is people up here thought it would be different - equal partner is a myth given the difference in conurbations and Scotland is still nothing more than a branch office

Ian Murray was interviewed last week and questioned on this issue. His response: "We have to make choices in our manifesto". When pushed on the fact that the government can prioritise the important parts of the manifesto, he started wandering off into the "everything must be costed" matra, despite numerous examples give to him of how they could afford lifting the cap - including Inheritance Tax changes that doesn`t affect the vast majority of the working cladding.

It`s really shameful from Labour, and the fact that they are suspending MPs due to this is unbelievable. Living up to the tag "Red Tories" without even realising it.

I see Martin Lewis the financial guru has been explaining this is not a cap on child benefit, it’s to do with universal credits and tax credits.

I confess I’m totally baffled, we just had a family allowance book back in the day!

The "cap" is aimed at those with more than 2 children, so the "righteous" ones are now saying it`s quite right to not give money to those that get pregnant with more than 2 children.

They should have thought about their finances before having them !

Then you get the situation when couples break up, loose their jobs or worse, one of them passes away, are the children not to be supported?

No doubt Labour will do it before the 2026 Holyrood election to give Sarwar a boost!🤔🤬

The simplest way of explaining it is you get no benefits for any more than two kids. Like anything, it makes sense on paper - there needs to be a limit.

However, the notion that people are procreating for a few quid a month is laughable at best. Children cost far more than you`re getting in benefits so it`s a false economy.

The issue with benefits generally is they`re intended to be a safety net rather than a way of life. Unfortunately, over the past decade or two we`ve seen workers rights diluted to a point that you`re often better off on benefits than working. Benefits like UC are massively abused by big companies like Starbucks and Costa. People are going week to week not knowing what hours they`ll work. Rents are sky high, energy bills are sky high, food prices are sky high. The country is broken and capping child benefits will only result in one thing - more hungry kids.

What happened to all the talk of going after these big companies? What happened with that JCB guy who owes HMRC £500m?

With the SNP on the rebound and losing support, they really should take the bull by the horn and mitigate it in Holyrood.
That sends the right message that they can change as well and try get voters back onside.

Whilst a COVID pandemic didn`t help, it was laughable that the Tories claimed to be better economically than Labour. Yes, Labour left the country in a poor position, but it was after a global economic crisis. The Tories managed to get us in an even worse position whilst claiming to be financially astute.

Unfortunately, Labour are inheriting a massive mess and it`ll take more than 5 years to resolve it. I`m all for tax rises to help balance the books but not for the average person. Go after these bloody supermarkets who are abusing universal credit so that we`re making up the shortfall for them paying their staff poorly and giving them crap hours.

The `market economy` hasn`t worked for years. Food Banks are now accepted as necessary for households to put food on the table; governments set `minimum` wages to force employers to pay decent rates and we now have Ofgen capping fuel prices because the cost of oil and gas is through the roof. Wages have been kept down with the reduction in the power of the unions but maybe the COVID crisis has given them new incentive to use their bargaining strength.

The claim that the Tories have some sort of monopoly on financial competence has always been a myth, promoted by the right wing media. That doesn`t necessarily mean that Labour will do any better though.

Meanwhile the royal family and their hangers on are pumping out children, Charlie gets a £45 million pay rise to cover it!

William not willing to declare what he`s coining in, allegedly he pays no income tax!

Nice revenue coming in from the sea bed and no billing for extortionate cost of renovation to Buck Palace!

I don`t think we can expect such a radical policy from Labour. After criticising Sunak`s travel arrangements when he was PM they`ve been defending their own use of a private Airbus jet. They`ve suddenly realised travel arrangements for politicians are all about `security`!

So now they`re going to attack the winter fuel allowance, only pensioners on pension credit or other benefits.

That`ll go down well in the far north of Scotland, eat or heat becoming a reality.

Meanwhile some pensioners abroad will still receive it!

Vote Labour!🤭🤣🤣🤣

It`s probably fair enough. Many pensioners but obviously not all are bringing in more income than those who are working and those folks don`t get a couple of hundred quid to help pay the heating bill. Pensioners who would have to choose between eating or heating will be on pension credit and will still receive the extra money from the state to ease the burden.

WFPs are devolved to Scotland and N Ireland apparently so it will be up to their governments whether they continue to be `universal` presumably. But if England and Wales are going to restrict them does that mean the Block Grant will be reduced and the devolved administrations will have to fund them themselves if they want them to continue to be `universal`?

I said some pensioners LA, not all. There will be many millions of pensioners who will obviously receive the basic state pension but will also have a workplace pension and perhaps even other private pensions. They might also be in a household where their husband or wife also receives a state and private pension. Add it all up and it could be a couple who are bringing in well over 30k per year and don`t need that 200 quid every winter. It`s about time this payment became a means tested benefit.

The winter fuel allowance was always a riot. I remember working with a guy on near twice my salary. I was living in a flat in a scheme paying my energy bills in full whilst he was sat in his nice flat in the Grange getting his winter fuel allowance. Even he said it was ridiculous.

On the radio this morning I`m Murray said there are 132000 pensioners in Scotland entitled to Pension credits who don`t claim it.
These folk are clearly poor enough to be entitled to it. So will suffer greatly because of cuts Labour swore they would not be making.

Another broken `promise`? From the Guardian -

`Andrew Dilnot, the economist who produced the report saying adult social care costs should be capped, has accused the government of breaking a promise to implement the policy. Speaking to Times Radio, he said that during the election campaign Wes Streeting, who was then shadow health secretary and who is now in charge of health in cabinet, said Labour would go ahead and introduce the cap, as planned by the Tories.

Dilnot first proposed a cap in a report published in 2011. Successive Tory governments delayed implementing this plan, but under Rishi Sunak the government was committed to bringing in the cap from October 2025. That would have imposed a cap of £86,000 on how much anyone would have to contribute to the cost of their own care during the course of their life.

In an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg on 16 June, Streeting said he was committed to this policy. He told her: `One of the things that we’ve committed to is – obviously the cap on care costs is due to come in, I’ve wanted to give the system the certainty this side of the election of knowing we’re not planning to come in and upend that and scrap that.`

When Kuenssberg asked him to confirm that Labour would stick to the plan set out by the Tories, and the October 2025 date, he replied: `Yeah, and I’ve met with Andrew Dilnot. What he set out is a framework that can also be adjusted to make it fair and more progressive when resources allow, but that is something that is already there. I’m not interested in tearing things down, until we’ve got something better to put in its place.`

Aha!
Just seen that winter fuel payment is being devolved to Holyrood as from next winter. Known as PAWHP - Pension Age Winter Heating payment.

Funding will be transferred and Scotgov already moaning it won’t be enough to pay it to all, but surely they can find the necessary savings to top it up ?

Stop opening pretendy embassies, wasting money on Indy papers guff, wasting millions on non devolved issues like foreign aid and climate damage etc

I don`t know why you revel in this stuff Parboiled. Westminster makes decisions that affect the poorest in society and then the Scottish Government has to mitigate their stupidity meaning cuts happen elsewhere.

Rather than moaning about embassies any the like why not focus on the billions of backhanders and wastage on pointless schemes like HS2 and aircraft carriers?

Parboiled`s like these Unionists you get on social media all the time. They call Holyrood a `pretendy parliament` equivalent to a `parish cooncil` then in the next post we`ll be told it`s the most powerful devolved government in the world and should be capable of mitigating the worst aspects of Westminster policy.

From Paul Lewis on X:-

Lots of discussion about meanstesting winter fuel payment for pensioners. Noone mentioning the £300 cost of living payment added to it for the last 2 winters won’t be paid this winter. So a £500 or £600 loss to millions of households and £300 less even to those who qualify
