 What a Load of Rubbish
Topic Originator: The One Who Knocks

Our latest exports south of the border will be one hundred truck loads of landfill destined rubbish each day from the start of next year.
You see from December 31st the Scottish Government has banned much black bag waste being sent to landfill , instead wanting it to be recycled or incinerated. A worthy initiative but they haven`t provided the facilities for such an endeavour. Not enough incinerators seemingly.
Now imagine it was the other way around. That everyday one hundred lorries were crossing over from England to Scotland to dump their rotten cargo. I know exactly what someone here would be saying.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

It`s weird going up to the dump now and seeing the old landfill covered in grass and wildflowers. It is disappointing though that local authorities didn`t get ahead of the game to sort out their own incineration though.

What`s disappointing is that the Scottish Government set this arbitrary cut off point. They could just put it back a bit further until we can actually deal with this trash rather than spend money burning even more fuel further polluting the environment and adding even more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

Well, it`s more efficient that shipping it half way around the world to a third world country.

I`d like to see the formal environmental impact of taking it all down the road....feels like it kind of defeats the point a bit!

Hate to tell you this, but most people work to deadlines. In this case the deadline was already pushed back due to COVID. They could extend it 200 years and people still wouldn`t act until they really had to.

I`ve just read the article about this on the BBC News website (which seems more like a plug for their documentary rather than a `news` story). It seems to raise more questions than it answers.

I have always been puzzled that burying rubbish in a landfill site was considered an environmentally-friendly way of disposing of rubbish. I assumed it was because the toxic fumes generated by incineration would be more damaging to the environment but apparently not, which is why the switch to incineration is being adopted so the overall change in policy seems sound.

Regarding the number of incinerators there seems to be some disagreement, with some environmental groups saying there are already too many in Scotland! In the meantime it seems a reasonable short-term solution to send rubbish south of the border although I`m surprised England is happy to consign it to landfill there and that they have no firm plans in place to switch to incineration although they seem to be in favour of doing so. They seem quite apathetic about `green` issues. We`re still waiting to hear details of the deposit return scheme they said they were planning after the UK government vetoed the one proposed for Scotland by Holyrood.

It would be worthwhile investigating why recycling rates in Wales are much better than in the rest of the UK.

Dunfermline could have done with the large spaceship like incinerator in Aberdeen, that should provide power for a decent portion of the city. Especially if it was up at the Wellwood site out of the way. It would certainly help provide energy for thw swathes of new houses being built on the North side.

Drove the Cuddy road today and didn’t realise there were more huge estates going up - seriously there is no infrastructure for these, and ironically being built next to a hospital with no A&E dept. How on earth are councillors getting away with signing these off constantly?

No need to tell me Jake, I realise that many people have to work to deadlines. This is however the government setting a deadline for another part of the government and that government department now having to spend a lot of money to deal with the outcome of that deadline which is ultimately defeating the environmental purpose of that setting that deadline in the first place. If this continues for a year that`s 36500 lorry trips of over several hundred miles each time.

Is there not some kind of generation plant up at Wellwood?

The development at former Dunlop plant in Pilmuir Street is seemingly being supplied from this source.
