 Edinburgh’s economy outperforms London’s
Topic Originator: Wotsit

Per-capita GDP in Edinburgh now higher than in London.

Nothing on the BBC website yet about this significant milestone despite the story being over 24 hours old.

Does that mean we`re subsidising them?

Just wait till ECC close off George Street - will be an absolute nightmare for delivery drivers trying to get to businesses during the day. Same as Leith Walk these days.

Somebody is being subsidised right enough: the median salary in Edinburgh (about £35k) is more or less half the GDP per capita.

And about 50% of the population of Edinburgh is economically inactive due to being retired, unemployed, sick, studying or a child so each of them is, in theory "earning" the city £59,809pa each, so really each worker is receiving, on average, somewhere around 25% (if my maths is right - it was never my strong point) of the value they, again on average, produce.

Your maths is awful 😂 Not sure mine is better but here goes.

Working age people (assumed 16-64) make up around 70% of Edinburgh`s population. 80% of them are economically active, so that`s 56% of the entire Edinburgh population who are economically active for ALL ages. That also disregards that people over 65 may still be working or receiving very healthy pension payments.

Regardless, GDP is a bullshit measure. Massively misleading, as you can tell from that figure!

Presumably the London and Edinburgh figures were calculated on the same basis and are comparable whether bullshit or not!

"Are English bank notes legal tender in Scotland 🤔😂"

Presumably so - I got a handful from an ATM at Morrisons supermarket !!!

Then used a note at an automatic checkout in the store - what one machine gives, another takes away !!!

Works for me !!!

Of course, if you have any you don`t want ..................................

I would assume all the stats are calculated on the same basis and therefore comparable.

I’m always a bit suspicious when one statistic out of many is quoted Why that one and not any of the infinitely many others? For example, A&E queuing times are often cited rather than, say, the length spent waiting for cancer treatments.

In this case, why GDP not GNP? Why per capita, not total? Presumably because this is the one that the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce looks at and it shows them in a good light (even if the figure is two years old). Of course, the SNP and “The National” are trumpeting this – do they think it reflects well on the SNP led Scottish Government, rather than on the City of Edinburgh Council? Or is it merely a statistical quirk relating to birth rates or location of company HQs?

If you were to look at total GDP, then bear in mind that London’s GDP is 3 times that of Scotland as a whole and 17 times that of Edinburgh. Per head Westminster and the City of London produces 13 times what Edinburgh does. I’m not sure of the relevance of any of those figures, but assuming that GDP/skull is a good proxy for tax revenue then Edinburgh may be subsidising some people in terms of public spending, but perhaps not that many.

Wotsit’s example is interesting. It doesn’t seem that outlandish at first glance.

What are percentages elsewhere? Presumably using a median rather than a mean makes a difference. Plus non-salary benefits will have an effect. I’ve seen a figure which suggests that the contribution of Labour to GDP in the UK is about 60%. the EU average is 48%. Presumably capital is a big contributor to the difference?

But who’s interested in specific GDP figures? No-one I know discusses them, which will be why it’s not reported – not when you have stories like NHS waiting lists (which people are interested in), gangland violence, the Dundee Uni shenanigans and David Murray’s “I’ve got a book to sell” mea culpa

As for legal tender – Bank of England notes aren’t legal tender in Scotland. Nor are Scottish Bank Notes.

I`m sure your average Scottish punter didn`t pick up on this at all.The Unionist media are never going to give it any publicity regardless of how it`s calculated and what it means so you can rest easy.
