Simple question really - if the PM steps down, and is replaced, should it trigger a General Election?
I understand you “vote for the party” element, but Burnham will be defacto PM without a mandate in reality. Is it fair that the next PM is selected by a party and not the people?

No. We need to get out of this pathetic approach of folk being offended, bumping their gums and moaning about **** for their own political gain.
If they start doing completely different stuff then that changes to a yes. But as it stands, let them execute rather than everybody talking nonsense about how they would make things so much better.

Yes
For two reasons
1) I believe the Labour landslide was more about voting against the tories as opposed to pro labour manifesto mandate …and now people are waking up to what a Labour government actually means on the ground
2) regarding the manifesto, Labour have already done things they said they wouldn’t and chose to do other major things that wasn’t in the manifesto
While we may not have a presidential election, people do vote considering who the party leader is, because they might be voting for local MP x, but they’re also potentially voting for prime minister y

What about the inevitable changes in Cabinet Ministers? Are the replaced ones entitled to enhanced pensions, no matter how short a period they have served for? If so, are they classed as `welfare payments`?

I think they might get a severance payment, but no early pension.
I believe they are classed as well-fair payments.

No.
I think it would mean poor Prime Ministers would be left in place rather than an unpopular government voting for election day.
Politics seems so fractured at the moment we could end up with a government with a workable majority that got even less of the national vote than Labour got.
