Well, if they post that they have entered the country illegally, are getting free housing and benefits & are acting criminally then any identification of hypocrisy would be justified, but I suspect laws will be respected.

I`d say there must be a whole load more money being made off the whole immigration game, from millionaire hotel owners charging extortionate fees for substandard accommodation, to the catering firms providing the food. It`s all a big money making scam.

The thing he`ll find in Denmark is that they have, historically, been more generous to migrants than the UK. In the last few years though, they have seriously tightened up their regulations and made it harder to obtain citizenship. I naturalized as a Swedish citizen in 2021 and, at that time, there was no civics or language test which I think was absolutely nuts. Now, thankfully, Sweden has tightened up and doing the same.
The major difference between Sweden and Denmark is mentality. Swedes have had peace for 200 years, while the Danes have known conflict and have that bit of nationalism, which I would say is a good thing.
Personally, I do think we (Scotland and Sweden) should have a tiered immigration system that flavours countries like US, Canada, NZ, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Indians, Kenyans, Filipinos and Latin Americans generally will also contribute positively as migrants and not demand that laws are changed.
The problem with immigration is those that value their "God" above the law of the land and, while it can be said for Christianity and Judaism, the big problem is Islam. And anyone who denies that Islam is political needs their head examined to be frank. That said, it is not quite that simple, Iranians and Iraqis integrated quite well in Sweden in my experience, but Moroccans, Algerians, Libyans, Tunisians, Somalis were scroungers and will contribute nothing. That was my experience working in the Swedish public sector.
Despite what many will try to claim, not all immigration is equal and we should be excluding groups who have caused problems.

From my time working in Sweden, the difference I saw and heard was that the large immigration of Iranians in the late 70’s and early 80’s were the educated Persians escaping the Ayatollah death squads, not the uneducated feral masses they got recently.
They arrived, integrated, worked, intermarried (some of the half Iranian/ half Swedish girls - wow!) with Swedes…
It was this great experience that Sweden had that lead them to allow so many this time - but not all migrants are the same - a hard lesson that they are learning.

I believe Indiapar is correct, and it won`t be the first or last time either side of the argument exploits data to support their cases.
So all the care workers who then brought their families in, who are now claiming for stuff would, I assume, be covered in this. Some of it would make logical sense, other stuff won`t.

So we`re talking about both employed low income people (for example, carers) and their family claims? No wonder it`s high then.
Perhaps the Government should look into how companies are exploiting worker hours to ensure UC top ups make up the wages. They`re effectively taking advantage of the tax payer. I`m not talking little businesses either. Costa, Specsavers, various supermarkets are all at it.

The problem isn’t companies exploiting workers. That’s such a myth in 2026.
If we force companies to up wages again we are forcing more external pressure on the market. We’ll increase base costs and decrease the job market.

It`s not simply upping wages, it`s providing jobs with enough hours that a UC claim isn`t needed.
The Tories are proposing a load of changes to benefits, which sound reasonably sensible, but they need to do more about wealthy companies who dodge taxes using loopholes.

I don`t think it is necessarily the way to look at it. I think for some roles it is the other way around, folk are more readily working out what works best for them aren`t they?!? And 16 hours plus more UC is more appealing given the additional time that gives them, particularly if you move to 16+16+8 rather than 2x20. I suspect this costs the government more, but keeps the unemployment numbers down.

My understanding is that carers on sponsored visas are not eligible to claim UC, neither are their family members. This may change where they may qualify following granting of indefinite leave to remain. For those coming into the country under the "Boris Wave" circa 2022 and with the 5 year rule would be circa 2027. They could be eligible at that time if they are still working, household income is low, or have children.

You’ve basically answered what I was thinking. Each role has different requirements, some roles will be better for someone who works 40 hours and some roles will be better for 2 x 20 hours.
And you’re 100% correct about the unemployment numbers. That’s where zero hours will paper over a lot of cracks although it’s worth noting zero hour contracts will suit some people and some roles.
I don’t actually think that the problem is how much companies are paying, I think the problem is more to do with working regulations but if it’s said out loud people freak out cos that is somehow the correct response.

That’s a good point Dave.
Catch 22 though, if you up wages you increase the base cost not just of raw materials but logistics and every other related business costs. What was once a good wage is no longer a good wage because a loaf of bread is no longer 50p it’s closer to £1.50

The last time I spoke with people from a carers centre you could tell the goodwill was wearing thin. Many were in the role because they had family or friends there.

And no they don’t get minimum wage essentially. Essentially new carers will get close to minimum wage but once you’re experienced and got further up the SVQ scale, you’ll around £14ph mark. I know carers earning £14.50ph.

A reminder in the Times today that the tightening of rules on immigration by the Home Secfretary will reduce the Chancellor`s `fiscal leadroom` by around £6.5bn as the majority of immigrants contribute more revenue in taxes than the cost of public services they consume.
Wee Eck I believe they were quoting an OBR figure. There has been some criticism of the way the data is gathered, as ot covers a 5 year period. So the net influx of 350,000 migrants over a 5 year period produced net tax receipts of £6.5 billion. The overall net contribution (taxes paid over services used) appears to be hotly contested. Additionally it depends on the demographic. Highly skilled workers for example, MAC estimates they make a net contribution over their lifetime of £78k or more. MAC estimates a family or care workers could have a net cost of £109k over their lifetime, and low skill low paid workers up to £164k.
The OBR assessment methodology attracts criticism because the 5 year period is short term as migrants generally contribute positively over that period, but in later years where they have access to NHS, retirement, other benefits etc. it may have a negative impact particularly if they are low skill workers.
It is a very complex calculation as there are many variables to the data gathered and its interpretation. You can`t simply extrapolate 5 years of data over say 50 years.
Interestingly, the UN concluded a number of years ago that to maintain the 1996 ratio of one person at state pension age to 4.1 workers funding their pension would require a UK population of 136 million by 2050. This figure considers migration and the compounding effect of those migrants also retiring and claiming pensions. Clearly that is not feasible nor a sensible way forward. Economists in the modern era believe that the way to maintain living standards (GDP per capita) for the UK population are by raising productivity and the pension age.
Productivity for example can be achieved via technology improvements, AI etc.pension age is obviously 67 at the moment, but it could rise dependent on the performance of the economy.

It used to be you could rely on anything published in the Times! Excuse my ignorance, but who or what is MAC?
Of course some immigrants are net beneficiaries of `the system` and some are net contributors. The same can be said of UK natives. When I was working I`m pretty sure I was a net contributor. Now I`m retired I`m still paying tax but making more use of the NHS so may be a net beneficiary. It used to be everyone accepted this and it was seen as a merit of the UK. Now there seems to be a tendency to distinguish between `givers` and `takers`. We`re becoming more like the USA where they think the NHS is `communism`.

MAC are the Migration Advisory Committee. There are others such as the Office for Budgetary Responsibility and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. I believe these figures can be interpreted in different ways.
On your point on net contributors, I understand for example those from the European Economic Area were net contributors of £4.7 billion during the period 2014/15 according to MAC and those from non EU countries. Oxford Economics calculated this was £2,300 per year more than a UK born adult. This is principally because they arrive ready to work. As a collective non EU were estimated to cost the Uk £9 billion. The caveat is that highly skilled non EU migrants provided a positive financial impact of £28k over their lifetime. The implication of the cost is indicated as family members, refugees and humanitarian arrivals.
According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, they indicated that during 24/25 almost 3/4 of migration to UK was from non EU countries. The gap between EU and non EU is now closing with the introduction of stricker controls and a points based system, ie skilled worker salary thresholds, higher visa costs etc.
Again its a complex picture.

Quite an interesting thread this, mostly from the point of view of observing how each set of posters have become so entrenched in their views, that both sides are unwilling to concede and agree that the other side may be correct about something, and instead resort to flinging a bit personal hate. 20 years ago on an internet forum, the discussion wouldn`t have gone this way, it would have been far more constructive and respectful.
The powers that be must be absolutely delighted when they see stuff like this, you have all let yourself become influenced to the point where you can`t really think for yourself, it`s all just as though you are a bunch of little sheeple following what you are told to think. Classic divide and conquer techniques, still working well on the masses

Honestly hilarious seeing the claim that Ukraine and Zelensky are corrupt...there is definitely corruption in Ukraine, but to then simply ignore the fact that Putin took control of Russia by becoming the biggest Oligarch and appointing his KGB pals to prime positions...well, that`s a special kind of ignorance! 😂 Why, with all the natural resources and population that they have, have the Russians failed to muster economic growth anywhere near that of the likes of Poland or Estonia? Prior to 2022, where do you think these revenues were going Dandy?
And, honestly, as someone who spent a lot of time in Denmark while based in Skåne over the Öresund, the Danes will not take you seriously if you spout that Pro-Putin nonsense over there.
And I`ll wish you luck in getting Danish citizenship because they`ll check your digital history quite thoroughly and won`t take kindly to these vired. You`ll also really struggle to meet the speaking and listening segment of the language test - as a Swedish speaker, those are pretty difficult for me, let alone someone who doesn`t speak any Scandinavian language.
Personally, I`ve been quite enjoying reading the stories about the English/Brits getting deported from Sweden because they haven`t filled their post-Brexit paperwork properly. Hopefully we can soon do the same in Scotland and get rid of the English oldies who come up to retire and milk our NHS and care services. Such scroungers pushing up the Scottish welfare bill...
Tiered migration from friendly nations and a points-based system for skilled immigration is the way to go, rUK included!

NMC, no I don`t regard either left or right as being irrelevant. Two opposite things can both be right or wrong at the same time.
Unfortunately, most of the political discourse is that only one thing can be right which is clearly nonsense.
Take immigration....
- Has it helped the country? Yes
- Has it got out of control? Absolutely
- Even when it was giving net benefit, were we letting too many of the wrong sort in? Yes
- Do we have a bunch of folk driving hate? Yes.
- Do we have a bunch of folk defending it at all costs no matter the impact it is having on communities? Yes.
I suspect the early release scheme will end up being similar. And the Tories who messed up the prison estate even more than it was before will be out saying it is all Labour`s fault.
But good luck finding a political party trying to run any reasonable arguments on that one topic. A large element of that will be because they`ll be on the record saying the opposite previously.
Our quality of journalists don`t help. Folk like Kuenssberg will claim they are holding people to account. Generally they are just trying to be a pain in the bottom for being a pain in the bottom `s sake.
I think Burnham`s words about trying to bring a consensus sound promising but are completely reliant on him (a) actually doing it and (b) others trying to do the right thing for the country. I suspect he will start playing politics soon enough.
I think the only things the Tories have said they will support the government on are things that`ll trap them against their own MPs. The Tories are now saying the Triple Lock should stay after (a) their initial cost being completely wrong and (b) many of their MPs previously saying it should be changed. And Reform can`t agree with themselves let alone anybody else.
All of them playing games rather than acting for the best of the country.

You can agree with parts of both sides of the debate, and disagree with other parts of the debate. It doesn’t make you a far right hate monger or a far left wokey.
People saying they wouldn’t fight in a war for their country now because they let too many immigrants in, just sums up that the argument of them being the only patriots is daft.
I wouldn’t sign up to the forces because I would never swear an allegiance to the crown - if that makes me unpatriotic then boohoo 🤷🏻♂️
The worst people to debate with are the ones that cant see both sides without prejudice.

I don`t have to go into the exact details with you, with all due respect, i reiterate , i have gone through the legal channels to live in Denmark and have dual nationality rights, i have the relevant visa/permissions etc for extended stay in Lithuania.
My Danish is pretty good, my Lithuanian is coming along at an ok rate, some of the masculine/feminine nuances can be challenging, i think that`s enough for strangers on the internet?
Also, let me address the "patriot" thing, at no point have i claimed to be patriotic, far from it, i have however voiced concern at reading about rapes, day in day out.
Zelensky is literally an actor, i don`t like him at all, that doesn`t mean i`m at all enamoured with Putin. As for corrupt, well, nothing says war torn like a vogue photo shoot and millions if not billions in the bank.
Our politicians are desperate for war and it`s our children that will pay the price.

Dandy - having "dual nationality rights" is very different from being a "dual national", which I am. If you do wish to naturalize in either Denmark or Lithuania then they will look at your anti Ukraine comments with suspicion. It seems that you don`t quite realise the depth with which Police and security forces can actually assess you. Lithuania in particular would likely be highly suspicious of the free pass you seem to give the Russians.
As for politicians being "desperate for war"...who exactly was it that started the conflict in Ukraine? Might it not have been Putin sending the LGMs into Crimea and Donbas without markings back in 2014 in the aftermath of Maidan? Can you really blame the former Iron Curtain countries for being determined to get rid of Putin and the wider Russian threat? At least the Ukrainians have the guts to stand up against corruption, unlike the Russians who flee or act like sheep.
By the way you write, you are not of the age for combat. At 34, I am. And I`m on the reserve list for the Swedish Air Force and will go if called upon. My Grandfather did the same in 1940 when he headed off to Canada to train on Spitfires. At 6 years old, my son in Japan will likely have to be involved in dealing with the CCP threat at some stage. There are mutterings that Japan is considering becoming a Nuclear-armed state...let that sink in.
United Russia and the CCP are far more worthy of your criticism than Zelensky. The issue our politicians are facing now is that they are having to be proactive rather than reactive toward these two threats, which are, likely worse than that posed by the Nazis in the 30s.

To be fair, history will show whether or not the threat today is greater than the threat in the 30’s.
Given the technology differences it’s easy to say the threat today is potentially greater but if all that happens is a pretty heavy regional war (irrespective of how much chest pounding the Russians like to do) then that really doesn’t compare to the scale of WW2.
And btw, Zelenskyy successfully ran an anti-corruption campaign which has somehow been forgotten by right-wing online media.

Let’s also be clear btw, it’s not just a rise in two lads having a punch up in the pub type of violence, it’s always the worst type of violence and usually against innocent people.

Can anyone give me a news article about the shooting in a Marseille school which details the ethnicity and background of the fourteen year old who carried out the crime. School shootings in the West are usually the doings of white males, as we unfortunately discovered in Scotland, but maybe this french incident bucked the trend.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

7 Somalis jailed for gang raping a 13 yr old girl.
Animals have more morals.
Last year?
Does it matter ffs?
You`ll be delighted that there`s been a shooting in a school on France no doubt, because, its the caring left eh.
Between you and TOWK the pander is full on.

But why pick a case from a year ago when there are unfortunately far more recent ones? And why then double down on their stupidity by mentioning a shooting in France?

Got to admit, my view of immigration, from being in favour of it to help us fill necessary jobs, and to welcome hardworking people from unsafe countries, is beginning to change now. You only have to walk round Dunfermline at this time of night, as I have just done, to see how the demographic has changed recently. Was in Tesco there, in the Tesco mobile shop waiting for ages while a guy that couldn`t speak much English signed up to a phone contract, and the security guard had to stop 3 separate people, who were perhaps Eastern European and some Turkish looking people from walking out with trolleys full of stuff they hadn`t paid for. 2 of them left the trolleys and walked out, the last one just started shouting and losing his sh 1t at the security guard, then the guard just let him walk out with the trolley full. Also recently seen a car with young white guys draw up at the garage at the back of Tesco and a bloke who looked Turkish appeared from nowhere and gave them some drugs in exchange for cash. That`ll be laundered through a barbershop. I used to speak to English people in places in the Highlands and they would say they`ve moved north as Scotland is like England used to be 30 years ago, before going on a wee rant about how they had been taken over, which I dismissed as racism. I think we are now beginning to see a similar shift up here now. It`s not going to bring anything good

Going to be hard to manage as stopping immigration probably requires reducing benefits to get folk back into work to fill those roles we currently rely on immigrants to fill.

Imagine going round to Brians house, who’s been on JSA for 10 years cause he “cant find work” and telling him he’s off to pick fruit and veg for 10 hours a day 4 to 5 days a week for minimum wage……..then when refuses reminding him that he voted for it by voting Reform/Restore 😂 I cant wait till that day comes about as a guy who’s worked full time since I was 17

I honestly believe the majority of migrants are good people. They’re coming here to work, raise families and in doing so add financially and culturally. I’m married to a migrant and I socialise with migrants so I really don’t like saying all migrants are bad. However, just opening the doors to everyone and their auntie just doesn’t work but aside from that, the reason things like the small boats becomes such a big issue is - that’s how the dregs from other societies become our problem.

Every day, more of these animals sexually assaulting, every day, alleged men like you making excuses for them
Seven of them, raping and punching a 14 year old.
And you, making excuses for them, sicko.
I don`t wanna go down like disco.

I`m wondering where I made excuses for rapists tbh. Maybe in one of Dandy`s imaginary conversations in his head. The last time I mentioned rape I`m pretty sure I highlighted I have a family member who was a victim of rape so I`m sadly well versed on the subject!
As I`ve said many times, I`m not bothered what race, faith or nationality someone is. Yes, I`m sure subconsciously I judge people based on prior experiences but generally I`m only concerned about people breaking laws or being dicks. If you can`t behave yourself then bugger off.
The issue is what you do with people who cannot abide by our rules or customs. A native will typically end up in jail, get community service and/or fined. The same should apply to an immigrant, but then really they should be immediately deported and dealt with in their home nation. But then if we don`t know their home nation or that nation refuses to take them, what do you do?
Life isn`t black and white and there are no simple answers. Parties like Reform and Restore are appealing as they simplify complex matters. Unfortunately, they talk a load of *****.
