It's pretty disappointing that only this story makes the headlines.
2 boats sunk off Phuket last week with 50 confirmed dead so far.

It's good we can finally start getting these boys out but can't help feeling sad for the Chinese tourists who were found huddled 49 metres underwater still holding their kids in the lounge area of the boat.

I'm sure there are things happening all over the world each day. Goodness knows who decides what to report and not report.

The first two boys are out; let's hope the mission is successful and they all get out safely, including their brave rescuers.

You are right about the ferry disaster, Thaipar. There are some very lax marine safety standards in SE Asia. There had been a warning issued by authorities not to sail due to wind and sea conditions, but they still put to sea for the sake of profit.

Incidentally, I am flying to Bangkok on Saturday.

Bangkok would be fine. I am staying at Samut Sakhon. I seem to remember you saying you were not too far from the capital. Give me few days to acclimatise as it is deepest, darkest winter here in Oz and it might be a tad hot and sticky over in your part of the world.

Brilliant news. Hats off to the rescue team and to the boys, who must have been wondering if they would ever see their parents again?

Wonderful news. An excellent organised rescue by the Thai authorities and their volunteers.

Rip to the diver who lost his life in this rescue mission also.

Good news-they've done incredibly well to survive that long. Big shouts to those who risked their own lives helping. The fact than one of the rescue team(an ex-Navy Seal) sadly died the other day shows the risks involved.

An amazing job well done by the Thai authorities.
I can't begin to comprehend the logistics involved in this, getting people in and out every day whilst ensuring they were safe.
And, they kept the press out of the way so that there were no distractions for the rescue effort, and to afford privacy to those rescued and their families.

I've seen a couple of side stories:
- A woman who owns a commercial laundry has been operating it 24 hours a day; overnight she arranged for the washing, drying and repairing of clothes from the rescuers, returned at around 4am daily. Just to help out.
- A couple of rice farmers; their properties were flooded by the water pumped out of the cave system over the past week. No problems, the crops will grow next year.

I think those rescued, and maybe some of the rescuers, may have some health problems to overcome, but they are being well looked after.

Damn.
News just broke that whilst an Australian expert cave diver / doctor was helping in this rescue, he has just found out that his father has passed away.

I have no idea how they did it. I cant even watch video clips. I'm seriously claustrophobic. They would need to knock me out or just shoot me and put me out my misery. What a story to tell the grandkids.
How long til they make a film.
