Jaws - the follow up that never was

Here's an interesting snippet about Jaws, the movie.

Instead of making the sort of traditional follow-up sequel that Jaws 2 ended up becoming, Steven Spielberg instead suggested that the next movie in the Jaws series be a prequel; specifically, he wanted it to be a prequel that documented the events of the USS Indianapolis - the real-life story that Shaw's shark hunter Quint tells during the movie. Unfortunately, because the studio wasn't interested in making that sort of movie, Spielberg parted ways.

While the overall style of Spielberg's vision of the sequel would have differed greatly from the original movie had Spielberg gotten his way, it would have capitalized on one of the most famous scenes in the entire movie. Quint's monologue about the USS Indianapolis has since become a classic, and given that no sequel in the entire Jaws series has managed to live up to to the original - let alone that monologue - producers might have been smart to take Spielberg's advice and take the series into a less expected direction.

Interested stuff mate. I didn't know that.

While I thought Jaws 2 was a reasonably good sequel (nothing could top the original) , that idea of a prequel would have been good.
It's one of those ideas that isn't too late to make however even if they dropped it from the Jaws franchise and made it a standalone movie.

There is a lowish budget TV movie about the Indianapolis. There are also a number of scripts floating around Hollywood which specifically tell Quints story during the sinking and rescue and the movie is often rumoured to be on the verge of being signed off but nothing ever seems to happen.

Robert Shaw was a unique actor and the character of Quint was a once in a lifetime role. I wonder who today could play a younger WW2-era Quint?

Had it been done a few years ago, I might have said Sean Penn. Today? Can't immediately think of anyone. Any ideas?

Oh I don't know who would play a young Quint. No problem with all out action stars who do a good job on the movies they do but this would need to be someone with good acting skills on an emotional level.
Originally Charlton Heston lobbied Spielberg to be cast as Quint but Spielberg went for Shaw much to Heston's annoyance. He then refused to appear in a Spielberg movie some years later.
Shaw who was a famed drinker, was actually totally drunk and unable to properly act when they first tried to film the Indianapolis speech and had to halt shooting. Shaw came back in the next day, apologised to all concerned and delivered an unforgettable scene.

I'm sure somebody on here a while ago said that Shaw would only work for cash in hand... This meant the IRS were chasing him... Which led to Shaw turning up, do a few scenes, then scarpering, incase he was collared by them.
Also read somewhere that him and Richard Dreyfus (not sure how to spell that) hated each other with a passion.

Show me the way to go home - I’m tired and I wanna go to bed.

I’d liked to have seen a prequel. Jaws was and is one of my favourite horrors.

Little known Robert Shaw fact: he spent part of his childhood in Stromness, Orkney. His father was the town doctor for a while.

Not sure I would call Jaws a horror but that's a different debate - it is the first blockbuster though.

USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage with Nic Cage is on Netflix I think, its terrible but quite enjoyable and makes you want to learn more especially about the treatment of the captain.
