 Favourite Villages

Just had a coffee in a wee tea-room in Falkland. What a cracking village. I love all the old buildings.
Culross is another wee gem.

Muthill on the way to Crieff, looks a nice place to retire.

Bet you lot know more.

Borghetto sul Mincio, Italy. Sitting in the wee restaurant there overlooking the river with a plate of pasta with butter and sage sauce - I'm not a believer in heaven but if there is one it must look a lot like that.

I do like Falkland. Beauty all around us as it happens.

Driving somewhere random and finding a wee place by accident is lovely. Places like Dedham and Lavenham down here are great to go to.

Aldeburgh is a wee bit bigger than a village but I have never found another place that puts me at peace as much.

....But it's the folk that make it really special.

Ipswichpar - I know its a bit "fake", but we really love Thorpeness. We must go there at least once a month - it is one of our happy places. Lavenham is a bit too snobby for my liking, although the streets/buildings are very picturesque indeed.

They always look that way in the summer months - just wait until the horrible winter weather kicks in and you are struggling through the snow etc.to get a loaf or a pint of milk at the nearest convenience store.....which has likely run out of stock anyway !!!

Is that where there is a golf course going up a steep hill. I played there once. Knackered at the end.

I lived near Aberdour for almost 3 years, when my family emigrated to Scotland in 1960. I thought it was the most beautiful village imaginable.

I still love visiting it today.

Yes, I would definitely have Crail and Aberdour on my shortlist and would add my old stalking ground, Bridge of Earn, to that list. There are lots of nice villages scattered across Scotland.

Here in Oz, the concept of a village doesn't really exist. Places we Scots would regard as hamlets or villages are called towns, while places we would consider towns get called cities. It is quite bizarre and takes some getting used to.

But if you are talking idyllic, then England always comes up trumps - Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales, the West Country, etc. With their thatched cottages and their brightly painted exterior walls, the villages in East Anglia - from North Essex through Suffolk to the North Norfolk coast - are very hard to beat.

Whenever I want to take my mind to a calm and peaceful place, I have a picture in my head of a stunning little village that I came across while cruising with my family on the Norfolk Broads. Its name is long forgotten, but it represents to me the most beautiful little village that I have ever seen. Maybe one day you will come across it too. You are sure to know when you find it...

:)
