not sure if viable but check AirBnB, will pick up a decent apartment for about half the price you would for a hotel. Plenty in an around the square for around £30 a night

Or if you're not to sure about AirBnB, I found trivago excellent in terms of customer reviews and prices (with a bit of checking veracity of ultimate provider of the deal).

Hotel Indigo. Stayed there for a couple of nights last year. Very clean, fresh, stylish. Pretty sure it was reasonable else I wouldn't have stayed there! Very close to the entrance to the old town gates and to the train station.

Aparthotel was excellent when we stayed in krakow last year. Basically an apartment with a hotel type reception on the ground floor and an Italian restaurant in the basement. In a residential area 10 mins walk or 2 mins on the tram from the city centre. Cost was very cheap around £40 per night if I remember correctly.

Booked somewhere called 2 nights apartment. Look very nice and just £30 per night. Free cancellation so I’d something else catches the eye

How far to auschwitz and salt mines?

We went to Salt Mines via a bus tour. From memory it was around 40 minutes. Well worth it though. Schindler museum was great too.

Well, not great, but you know what I mean.

We stayed at the place Dover suggested earlier this year. Pretty good and not far out.

I'd highly recommend a tour of Auschwitz and the Salt Mines. We done both in one day in a combined tour with a pack lunch and hotel pick up included.

Was with krakow shuttle.

Just back - great short break.

Stayed in Best Western Plus, Krakow Old Town, a short walk from the main square.

Nice comfortable 3 star modern accommodation. Fixed price of 90 Zloty (£20 ish) for taxi back to airport when returning. 20 Zloty to train station, 9 Zloty single rail journey to airport.

The Salt Mines and Auschwitz/Birkenau are best done on organised trips with a guide - Schindlers Museum (based in the wartime factory) is in the city and can be visited DIY with a bit of planning and research.

One thing to beware in restaurants are the prices listed on menus for steak and beef - it's per 100 gram weight, not per dish served - so you need to know what size of cut is likely to be dished up or you'll get a nasty shock when the bill appears.

I'm certainly going to go to Auschwitz but unsure whether to do the Salt Mines.
I'm thinking once you have seen one thing carved from salt, you have seen them all?
Right or wrong?

The salt mines were well worth it - they have carved out areas as places of worship and there were sevices being held when we visited.

Also stables for the pit ponies used to haul the wagons underground.

One tip - go with an organised tour that has pre-booked tickets organised so no need to queue - the walk up line to buy them was long and slow.

3rd yes for Salt Mines, I went a couple of weeks ago and like you wasn’t sure but a definite wow!
Would recommend 2 restaurants too Bianca (on the square) and Pod Aniolami (off the square towards the castle). And for a beverage Movito cocktail bar and the Wodka bar for various flavour vodka!

Your hotel should be happy to arrange your trip, it was 160zloty each for transport & fast-track, so about £32. It’s about 20mins outside Kraków

Raymie, apologies, just clocked your question on Polish wheat beer - short answer is yes, like the German brews.

I notice Lidl stock a German brand at an attractive price - I tried the alcohol free version recently and it was quite acceptable.

Why not ask your sister, Raymie? She and her man were there in June and stayed in a city centre hotel which they thought was great value. They had a mini apartment and breakfast included. Easyjet package, I think.

The salt mines are worth the trip & climbing the bell tower in the castle which is near the Jewish District in krakow is superb. The vodka liquor is also superb.

Thanks for all the tips - last one - How much should the Auschwitz and Salt Mines tour cost? I'm thinking of the private one - save all the f******g about picking others up?

Prices for tours vary. We were with Royal Krakow if memory serves.

Try Viator for options - 10% discount if you Google around for deals.

We did a small coach party, it didn’t take too long to collect and return punters.

I’m thinking the private tours is basically a taxi ride there and back without a proper guide - you really need one to get the best out of the visits. They may offer joining a guided tour in English though.

I’d definitely recommend using the guided tours on both trips.
