Loved the original, I hear this is a sequel too, not a reboot...

Hope it is a sequel. They could never improve on the original, which was stunning.

***SPOILET ALERT*** It is a sequel. It turns out at the end of the first Das Boot the captain didn't actually die, he had merely fainted. Once he recovers he vows revenge and takes control of Hitler's latest V-weapon, Das Uber Sub! The mission is a simple one. Sail up the Thames and destroy the Houses of Parliament while Churchill is delivering one of his trademark rousing speeches. The series may or may not be historically accurate but it promises to be a rollercoaster ride.

May not be historically accurate is a gross understatement !!!

The original was based on a real type VII U-boat (U-96) and was very accurate in general detail, although not in the eventual fate of the submarine.

Who plays the captain in the new production - Jurgen Prochnow is in his late 70s ?

Idris Elba plays the captain. The first mate is played by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Natalie Portman plays the chief engineer and also the woman they both love.

Especially as the Germans didn't let women on subs til 2014... Or thereabouts.
But someone did say its not meant to be historically accurate

Way too subtle for a hick from the sticks like me !!!

I though Uber was a taxi outfit !!!

As a film U-571 is best forgotten - the real submarine was sunk by a Sunderland flying boat of the Royal Australian Airforce in January 1944 west of Ireland.

The boat in the sequel is identified as U-612, which will puzzle any anoraks like me who are into historical accuracy.

The real U-612 sank after a collision with another German submarine in August 1942 during a training cruise in the Baltic, subsequently salvaged and used only for training missions until the end of the war when it was scuttled to avoid capture by the advancing Red Army.

So how it became stationed at La Pallice submarine pens on the French atlantic coast will be interesting.

I've watched the first few episodes after reading this thread. I'm not that clued up on the history of U-boats as vee but as a show I'm enjoying it. My memory of das boot was a dance remix in the early 90's that I played constantly for months.

Unfortunately I'm also a bit of a historical stickler and I agree with VEE.
They could at least have done a bit of research and used a U-boat number that didn't exist.
To expand on VEEs post....
German submarine U-612 was a Type VIIC U-boat built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine for service during World War II. She was ordered on 15 August 1940 and laid down at Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, on 21 April 1941. She was launched on 9 January 1942 and commissioned 5 March 1942 Oberleutnant zur See Paul Siegmann was her first commanding officer. He was joined in May 1942 by Herbert Werner, author of the book “Iron Coffins”, as First Officer.
While still on trials in the Baltic U-612 was sunk in collision with U-444 on 6 August 1942. She was later salvaged and served as a training boat until the end of the war, when she was scuttled on 2 May 1945.

"They could at least have done a bit of research and used a U-boat number that didn't exist."

Exactly - the same for U-571,it would have been easy to use a fictitious number, there were several unassigned.

Fairly sure the vocal sample was created on an Amiga 500.

Ha, it might well have been. A mate of mine gave me a USB turntable a few years back so I could convert all my records to digital. I found two copies of this track in amongst them but I can only remember buying one. That didn't baffle me as much as finding magazines that you used to find in hedges in amongst them as well though.lol

A mate of mine borrowed pretty much my entire record collection and never gave me it back. It's probably worth a fair wedge now as there were quite a few white labels in there so I'm pretty gutted.

We were in La Rochelle on a cruise a few years ago - I enquired about visiting the u-boat pens at La Pallice which are closeby.

No joy, still a restricted area under the control of the French navy.

La Rochelle wasn't liberated until May 1945 (see link below) and there remains an anti German attitude amongst the elderly. The local authorities understand such sensitivities and will not allow the pens to become a tourist attraction. I suspect that will change with the passing of time.

They are used for film production - Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and the original Das Boot, for example.

The other former complexes at Nazaire, Lorient and Bordeaux are open to the public.
