Agree with your comments Oz.
As is very usual these days, there is already talk about an appeal against the verdicts, but it is (very) public now. I can't see how even the Vatican could support him any longer.

Yep,telling a man he can't marry and that is pleasing to God is particularly evil. The consequences of that doctrine are being played out daily. There will be many more to follow.

Rasta, this guy was No.3 in the Catholic Church global hierarchy. He was the Church's Chancellor of the Exchequer in Rome - he ran its finances. He was to all intents and purposes, THE BOSS!!!

Arf. Guid ane!
I dont think it has anything to do with the marriage thing although that is just another vatican control issue.
Paedophiles will find ways to get to their victims. Positions of trust in any organisation with access to vulnerable people will be target carreers for them.
The position did not make the cardinal a paedophile. He was a paedophile who gained an advantageous position.
Any normal priest who needs sex will have a bit on the side somewhere. The nuns were used for this service in bygone days and probably still are.

The Pope is as guilty in all of this.

Let them marry and this becomes a non issue.I'm sure a small % will deviate still from this but it would act as a natural restraint for most.

Marriage won't make any difference to a paedphile. That urge will remain whether they are having legal sex or not. I did a couple of courses on this when I was with Barnardos. Even if you castrate them they will still have an urge and find a way to abuse kids.
I don't know what the answer is.

That might be so but I'd like to see the figures between the Catholic church and other churches where ministers can get married and have children.

I read an article last year about instances of paedophilia in churches in the US.
Last year was the first time there were more in Evangelical churches than in Catholic.
Basically my advice to religious people would be not to leave your kids alone with anyone from the church. It's not worth the risk.

Maybe going a bit too far but on the other hand, I had a good friend in the church who I would have trusted with my kids. He turned out to be a paedophile. He only got 4 years. Nowhere near enough.
Maybe you shouldn't leave your kids with anyone. Uncles are apparently the biggest threat.
It is a serious global issue wherever folk have authority over kids, not just a church bashing excuse. It obviously stands out more when professed churchy folk are involved.
We cant let paranoia rule but we need to be aware.

The dude literally speaks from the mouth of a snake in a snake head shaped building and as I've stated before, the Catholic church uses more upside down crosses than your average Norwegian death metal band.
Talk about hidden in plain sight...

The sentencing for Pell is currently in progress.
Pell has had one of Australia's finest QCs running his defence, and he has now provided numerous character references to support Pell, including one from a former Australian Prime Minister (Howard) and quite a few from other very prominent people.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out.
Unfortunately one of his victims has died without seeing this play out.

Pell was on bail. That has now been revoked and he is remanded in custody, and will be sentenced on March 13.
He was still wearing his priests collar when attending the court today.

I wouldnt worry about the 6 years. If he believes what he claims to believe, he will be looking forward to an eternity in Hell.

I rather like Buddhism. It has no god. It doesn't have Ten Commandments, it just has five (they are known as precepts) and, in the main, they are much easier to follow...
Do not harm or kill living things.
Do not take things unless they are freely given.
Lead a decent life.
Do not speak unkindly or tell lies.
Do not abuse drugs or alcohol.

Thatโs the point Richie. It is not a religion; it is a state of consciousness. I admire Buddhist precepts, though I donโt adhere to its practice. Similarly, I have always been impressed by Quakers that I have met in life. They too have an outlook on life that strikes me as being more in line with modern thinking than conventional Christianity or Islam or Judaism.

I think most would consider it a religion.Quakers are in lots of ways fine folks they differ though in one doctrinal sense from biblical christianity in that they believe in an ongoing revelation and that God speaks to certain individuals.
Last time i checked the book was finished a while ago.
