 Rugby World Cup
Topic Originator: desparado

Starts on Saturday with Scotland v Ireland on Sunday. We can win this if we play at the top of our game but I still think we are prone to making costly errors in most games. Against the likes of Ireland it will prove costly indeed.

Hey I'm as patriotic as anyone when it comes to the world of Scottish rugby... But if you think we can win it you need to take a wee lie doon min😏
And Ireland will slap us... And quite rightly so... Given their current lofty ranking.
Here's my summary...
First game... Loss.
Aw the rest of the group games..win.
Through to the knockout rounds... First game against someone brilliant... NZ or SA... Gubbed.
Then fly back home with hope that we've become a much better team for the whole experience.
Sound familiar??? 🤣

Cut out the basic errors against Ireland and we have an outside chance if they are a wee bit off the pace.
I was at the game against Japan at the last WC and it took us well into the second half to dispose of them. They will be up for this one playing at home. It will be tight.

A terrible lineout and an even worse refereeing decision in the last minute cost us a semifinal place.

While Ireland should beat us, they have a pretty woeful record at world cups, and it'll be interesting to see how they react to their #1 ranking.

3/1 on a Scotland win seems quite generous (although we are terrible away from Murrayfield).

Only because of the kick off times.
Scot/Ire/Wales all went out in the quarter finals. But you are correct in that we were the last home nation to be defeated.
England famously didn't qualify for the quarter finals finishing 3rd behind Australia and Wales in their group .
Can't remember who beat Wales but Ireland got gubbed by Argentina and Scotland got beat by 1 point by Australia... I remember that particular game very well lol

Win lose or draw, can't wait on the action starting.

I think Ireland on Sunday will be tight with Ireland edging it. Hope not as they are boring to watch and when we are on the game can be very exciting.

Game went pretty much as I expected. Russia are worse than useless and are only there to make the numbers up... But did play above their level for a wee while at least.
Nigel Owens is a marmite ref but I still think personally that he's the best there is at the moment.
He controlled that game brilliantly.

Japan should have won that more convincingly but seemed very hesitant for periods in the match and even struggled against the whipping boys of the tournament at times and relied on mistakes to give the score a better complexion.

Treading carefully here or at least trying to.... do the Japanese have quite a large number of their squad native of other parts of the world. At least one of their line up was of 'western' appearance and I wonder if they draw on guys of Japanese heritage from the Pacific Islands.

3 year rule.
If a player has been playing Union rugby at club level in a country for 3 years he can if he wishes play for that countries national team... If he is lucky enough to be selected of course

Yeah the Sunwolves are in Super rugby but only til the end of the 2020 season.
I believe the decision is financially based... Plus they're getting slapped aw the time 🤣
Super Rugby will go back to 14 southern hemisphere teams.
It was expanded in 2015/16 (not sure) to 18 teams.

Think it’s too early to condemn Townsend though we are all disappointed.

That was an Irish team playing at the top of their game. They put the pressure on early, got ahead and we were always on the back foot. Numerous handling errors and failing to be patient and go through the phases when in possession didn’t help.

That’s down to on field management not the coach.

How we respond in the next couple of games will define our WC.

I'm not sure Townsend is the man to take us forward - our attack is pretty decent, our defence is awful. Ireland are probably the best team in the world for squeezing the life out of a game once they are ahead (not pretty but very effective). We were never gonna recover from being 3 tries down in the first half.

We normally go through the phases and we knew we needed to keep possesion from a very physical Irish side. I dont think we got a chance to play our game. They were so fast and physical we were forced into rushing things and making errors. I think we got a lesson from the favourites.

Some countries are really good at either 7s or 15s. NZ, Australia, South Africa, and England are the ones that I feel would be classed as being the best at both.

I said earlier in the thread Japan would be hard to beat. It just got a whole lot tougher and a four day turnaround won’t help us.
Meanwhile we still have to beat Samoa and Russia and take the full 5 points in each game to have any chance.
I somehow think our WC is over already.

Russia is clearly a 5 pointer but we really need to be at our best against Samoa.
Japan were brilliant today but their open play won't work the same against Scotland as it did against a one dimensional stuffy Irish team.

Do or die for Scotland against Samoa.

Good to see Barclay and Taylor dropped - they only played one or two games at their clubs at the end of last season and their lack of fitness has showed.

Glad Darcy Graham is getting a game.

But he's not had a lot of game time since recovering from an ankle injury he picked up in the 6 nations and maybe (just guessing) a game against the hard hitting Samoans isn't really the best game for him to be thrown into.

They need to drop a bonus point... Or get beat.
If not I think we've had it cos I don't think Ireland won't lose again.
So assuming we beat Russia handsomely we'd get to 10 points... Then IF we were to beat Japan we would be on 14.... 15 if we score a bucket load.

If Japan beat Samoa that puts them on 13/14 depending on the score.
Then they play us but if they're on 14 points by then, even if we beat them we need to win well to get to 15 points. If we beat them but only get 4 points we could finish on the same points so it would come down to points scored.... I think 🤔
Ireland will most likely win both remaining games and could potentially finish on 16 points thus winning the group.
But it's possible that they could also finish on 14 or 15.
Not sure if there's a way for Scotland, Japan, and Ireland to all finish on the same points... But I'd bet if that happens... Scotland would be the ones to lose out... Cos that's the way the world works 🤣
(it's all very confusing so if any of that's wrong feel free to correct me)

First criteria in a tie is head to head widtnk. I would anticipate that when we play Japan we will be on 10 and they will be on 14. We would then have to beat them and not allow them a bonus point (& qualify on H2H) or if they get a losing bonus point we need to get a bonus point for tries scored again to go through on H2H

Just watched the highlights.....missed the live game.

Never realised just how close Scotland were to going out.

We needed the bonus point.

The ref goes to the TMO for the Maitland try that was eventually given and rightly so.

The TMO said “ Maitland had lost control before the illegal tackle, which was complete rubbish. It was the illegal tackle that knocked the ball from Maitland grasp.

If the ref had gone with the TMO , it would have been a line out , no try and we would probably be out already.

The ref called it right.

The thing is when the ref gave his version of events, saying that he thought the challenge knocked the ball from Maitlands grasp the TMO changed tack and meekly agreed.......thankfully....

What is the point of having a TMO who can’t see the obvious on slo mo replays ?

I first I thought Maitland was crazy trying to dive early and slide it over the line but it was genius as it meant their player had no choice but to go in with his feet to block him.

Not helped by Italy having a man red carded for stupidity but they're lucky it was only one man.

What's with the terrible highlights coverage online? 6 nations games regularly get 5-7 mins of highlights for bog standard games. Every world Cup game is literally showing the try being scored, rarely a replay at a different angle and you're lucky if it lasts for 4mins. Utter joke especially as most people will miss the games due to the times they're being played at :(

I am in Japan and this one is absolutely going to hit. Press conference midday today where they are expected to cancel the England game having reflected a closed doors match in the South. Another one tomorrow about the Scotland game - the rules give them the out to cancel but there is talks of moving the game. England’s match is a dead rubber anyway I think and the Japanese are big on honour and can’t imagine them being keen on getting a free pass and all the stink that will create. Suspect (and hope) the outcome will be to move the game to Monday in the North.

They have said there is no possibility of the game being rescheduled or relocated. It will be either off or on. It seems likely the worst of the typhoon will have passed by Sunday but the problem will be the extent of the damage that may have been done.

For the integrity of the sport, they should have made contingency plans instead of a wait and see attitude.
I'm not blaming Japan as, as was said, they have a deep sense of honour but the rugby authorities who knew this was a possibility given it is typhoon season.
Why can't they fly the players north to another venue while there is still time?
Yes it means a nightmare for fans who can't similarly alter their plans but I'm sure even they would rather the integrity of the sport is paramount.

Agreed, no way can they move it now that they have committed to a late fitness inspection of local infrastructure and if the hosts were to go through under a cloud it will look really bad. Italy will be p’d too - it was unlikely they could get through but their tournament was still alive.

Rugby is trying to be a truly global sport but they will never achieve that if their premier tournament is perceived as a joke where progression comes down to chance. They knew it was typhoon season so they should have had a committed Plan B even if it did mean fans not seeing certain games.

Englandlandshireshire vs France & NZ vs Italy have already been cancelled so I don't think they would have an issue cancelling it... If need be.
Frustrating as it is, we can't expect them to bend the rules for us just cos we're Scotland.

Theres no way World Rugby wouldn't have rescheduled the matches if New Zealand, Ireland or England needed a win to go through. The fact that Italy (and potentially Scotland) are the ones to lose out and Japan are likely to go through makes the decision a kit easier for the organisers. With the Quarter Finals not until the following weekend, there is no real reason that Monday or even Tuesday could have been held in reserve as dates for any games that needed postponed, especially given that the tournament was always slated to be played in the Typhoon season.

Hopefully it's a super typhoon in a tea cup and we get the chance to play but if we go out it's because Japan did better against the same teams as we played.Although it's typhoon season they rarely see them of this magnitude apparently.

It would be a sore one to take but these things happen. The cricket World Cup held in this country earlier this year had games called off left, right and centre due to a wee bit of rain.In fact Scotland were denied a place at that tournament due to a game being abandoned against West Indies with us in a winning position. We are jinxed!

I wish there was a super typhoon in Russia tonight-would happily take the 0-0 draw :)

It's stupid in the extreme. It looks like all the sports associations are competing to see who can pick the worst venue for their tournament.

We have athletics picking Doha (no atmosphere, too hot and air conditioned stadia), football world cup in Qatar ( too hot and poor human rights) and rugby on Japan in typhoon season

All a bit mad.

Reports claiming we are prepared to sue the organisers if our game is cancelled.

Is out not that there's a force majure clause which could mean the game could be played on another day (which negates the other rules called out as reasons for not delaying)

And that the lawyers are getting involved to challenge the ruling

It would be remiss of the SRU if they didn't explore every channel to try and get this match played. I don't get the argument that we should accept the decision just because the four nations whose games were cancelled have accepted theirs.

To be honest I haven't seen the details so you might well be right.

I dont think it was fair on any of the teams to lose a game and it doesn't do the integrity of the tournament any good.

Why not get both teams on a plane to a safe venue, even Australia or somewhere, and just play the game. The cancelled games just show the Rugby World Cup up as a Mickey Mouse tournament

Workman like performance from Australia to see off a very spirited Georgia.
Wasn't the best showing from Australia but the weather didn't help them and they rested a few regulars.
I believe Georgia are ranked 13th currently (or last time I looked) so not a bad showing from them although they ran oot of puff in the last 10 minutes.

Knock out games get rescheduled, it’s only this stage this rule applies.

That said the owner of the apartment we are renting for the trip was round today and he’s pretty certain the game will go ahead - however he was literally boarding the windows up at the time and then asked us to let him know if the roof gets blown off (and he wasn’t being funny)

They've just said (or I think I heard) at the end of the programme that was covering Australia vs Georgia that Japan vs Scotland could potentially be played in an empty stadium if need be?
Can anyone confirm... I was in another room but the host of the show said something along those lines

It’s not a case of the weather being fine more a case of how much damage has been caused to the stadium and surrounding areas and also if the transport links are running but that being said even if everything if good to go after the sru’s threat of legal action i would be surprised one bit if world rugby called it off anyway and it says something when the FIA who are one of the most shambolic sporting organisations in the world manage to put a plan b into effect regarding the F1 go this weekend

We'll get nothing from the referee so we have to be at our absolute best. It'll be a shame for the tournament and the Japanese team if we win and part of me wants them to qualify but it's unfortunate they're in our pool (I always want the tier 2 nations to do well and have been glad to see Fiji, Argentina and Japan do well previously). If we can play well and win, then who knows? Maybe the All Blacks will be undercooked in the quarter finals having played South Africa then had 2 walkovers and then the Italy game cancelled.

Tier two nation or not, they're above us in the world rankings and if the play anything like they've shown in the past they could hammer us.
That said... If we perform like we're capable of doing (now and then) we could hammer them.
But can we beat them by enough??? 🤔
As for the next round (if we get there)... Forget it... Wur doomed min 🤣
NZ are light years ahead of us even on an off day (and they don't have many off days)

Four day turnaround and loss of a practice session don’t help.
The world other than Scotland ( and Ireland maybe) will be supporting the Brave Blossoms.

No sentiment from me for the hosts. Let’s bring our best game today and it should be enough. Just worried we need to get four points more than them as they could sneak a bonus point.

Forever optimistic!

The Japanese have the hunger,we have not. Going out on a technicality looking the better option after that half.

Game needed to be played, whoever goes through, it should be based on what they've done on the park.

I know japan had more to lose if the game went ahead, if they see this out, which is looking more likely with every minute, then nobody can question their place in the next round

Oh well. Best team won. If only Scotland had played with as much spirit in the first half as we did in the second.

Conceding a try either side of HT was what done us. A club rugby team would get reamed from that third try right on HT.

Anyhoo, Townsend needs to have a rethink.

What has happened to Hogg? Not half the player he was a couple of years ago.

Ritchie was immense. Darcy quiet.

Centers? A big problem just now. Harris was quite prominent to be fair.

Well done to Hamilton Accies, I will be rooting for them from now on.

Rugby is a sport where game management on the pitch is key.
You have to able to adapt to both the other team and the conditions.

I always think Laidlaw plays the game too slowly. We missed Price but picked up the pace when Horne came on.
Russell is a hit or miss player. His kicking today was largely inaccurate and we ended up giving possession away to a team that guarded the ball well and made few if any errors.

Sure I heard the pundits saying that Japan had......no....handling errors in the whole game.....unbelievable.

Now I think I know the rules pretty well but when Russell fumbled the ball just after a Japan’s second try Graham was a shoe in to score.

A knock on was given. I did not see the ball go forward but sideways. Thought we were hard done by there.

Also late in the game Harris fumbled......backwards and a knock on was given.....bizarre.

Hats off to Japan for a brilliant performance. Let's not forget they also beat Ireland who had been ranked World number one earlier this year. I thought it was a very enjoyable game played in a good spirit. Well done to Scotland too for never giving up and the spirited fight-back in the last 30 minutes. If only rugby was like football and lasted another 10 minutes - because at the end the Japanese were just hanging on. Pity also that Finn Russel's fumble in the first half was adjudged to have gone forwards (when perhaps it went sideways), as he had then gone on to set up an almost certain try with a brilliant kick to the wing. That could have made the game 14:14. The ref also often failed to penalise the Japanese for offside. Let's not also forget the Japanese team had everything to play for, given they were host country looking to build the game and make the step up to tier 1. The damage and loss of life caused by the Typhoon will have also spurred them on as would the vocal 16th man in the stands. I agree with other posters that we kicked away too much possession in the first half (when we didn't have much to begin with). Perhaps on another day we would have been more clinical in finishing some of the chances we did create later in the game. However congratulations to Japan who deserved their win on the day.

Agree. While the Russell incident clearly didnt go forwards, another ref could have easily given Gray a red card and Ritchie was a lucky boy too.

Would have been nice for it to end as a draw given what both teams put into it.

I think that Japan will come up short next. It is always nice to see the hosts progressing beyond the group stages in any tournament in my view.

Lots of "preparation for the upcoming six nations blah blah" and all that.

There was potential to ping him for a red but the guy clearly dipped his upper body and braced after gray was committed to the tackle and in a low position. Would have been a hard call and probably rescinded on review by any competent observer. On the other hand Japan were offside on a few occasions, and were very adept at leaving a man blocking the gate in the rucks and finally made McCaw look like a saint with their continual coming in from the side. The ref tried his best to let the game flow which was exactly what was needed to give us the spectacle that was both tremendous to watch and played at breakneck speed. A comment from the commentary team was that Japan had been in camp for 240 days, no wonder their handling was centimetre perfect. Toonie is surely a dead man walking after continually coming up short of the mark in the 6 nations and now the world cup. He will have his eye on a contract payout and a cushy number in the premiership or top 14. If the SRU continue with him it will show that whilst they have ambition on paper, they are happy going backwards. Over to Dodson and the nodding dogs at Murrayfield now. If we want to progress and reassert ourselves at the table in the top tier change is required and that will be from ground up. There have been some changes at grassroots level but if we continue to prize brawn and strength over skill at schoolboy level progress will be difficult 5/10 years down the line. Super six is not the answer, another pro team is required probably based north of Edinburgh with Aberdeen being the obvious choice. I have seen what Smudger Smith is building from scholarship kids at Glenalmond and those boys are a shining example of how to play exciting, engaging rugby as a team.

Just watch it. Watch the angle and height Gray comes in at and watch the timing of the Japs dip. Its so clear the officials didnt even give a yellow or even a chat. The players also acknowledged each other.

That's probably as a result of Scotland only having 2 teams in the limelight ... Edinburgh & Glasgow.
And the limited budgets they have.
Most of the Pacific islanders that are currently playing for international teams other than their own is as a result of the residency rule.
Pacific islanders want to play abroad to earn money for their families... But after 3 years (soon to be 5) they can be picked for the national team of whatever league they are playing in.... If they choose to.
We only have 2 clubs.... And they play in the pro 14.
Which although good... Isn't a patch on say the set up in England.
The Premiership down south and abroad is where the big money is....so that's where the talent goes.
We meed more scottish clubs cos 2 just isn't cutting it.
We get beat regularly for a reason..
We only have very limited resources to form a national squad from.
This needs to change.
I don't have the foggiest how to go about it... I wish I did.
But until its addressed we will always be in the position we currently are.... WE'RE JUST NO VERY GID!!!
We have our days here and there... But they're too few and far between sadly 😕

I think it's more to do the fact that, as with pretty every sport these days, the incentives are such that talent flows from 'small' to 'big', which means an ever increasing gap in performance between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'.

Cricket is a great example of this, as is Rugby Union. Rugby League seem to have taken a more pragmatic view, with a number of Tonga players, who'd previously played for other countries now representing Tonga, making them very competitive on the World Stage. Union could learn a thing or two from league in that regard.

I think we are a good side Widders. Not as physical as the top 3 or 4 but with a slight improvement we could be top 5. Plenty talent there and I like the way we play. I think nobody expects to beat us without puting a shift in. I think a North and Midlands pro side is a must to help make that slight change.

Looking at what was essentially the second string against Russia I think there's a bright future ahead regardless of who's in charge. Hastings ready to take on the mantle from Laidlaw in the near future.

Englandlandshireshire slapping Australia earlier wasn't that much of a surprise but I do think Australia were poor on the day.
Interesting game on now with NZ battering a very poor (so far) Ireland.
Ht 22-0

What a start for France!

French boy might have given his team an uphill task now after throwing a stupid elbow

French rugby history would be far more glorious if they had better discipline.

South Africa handing out a hiding to Japan. I was surprised it was so close for so long tbh. They’ll beat wales as well.

Let's hope so. Would hate to see either Wales or England in the final.

Why hate Wales winning it. Good to see a new name on the trophy. Welsh national game too. Great for them. Ive always liked the Welsh sinc watching the 70s matches. Amazing performances. I thought we Scots were pretty much in tune with the welsh...apart from Brexit.

Was like men against boys today. NZ just seemed to wilt under the physical dominance of the English.

Well deserved win for England. Never gave NZ a sniff.
Undecided about tomorrow’s game.
Northern Hemisphere final would be great but can’t stand Gatland after his snub to some Scotland players on the last Lions tour.

Great display from England and well deserved.
NZ had no answers at all and even their one try came from a bad English line out.

Would like SA in the final. Enjoy their open style of rugby and would be a great final.

Englandlandshireshire were brilliant today... Much as it pains me to admit it.
What price would you have got before this tournament started on an Eng vs Wales final?
Could very well happen

SA just edge it in a brutally physical game. Always competitive.
Tough on Wales.

Reflecting on the two semi finals it’s clear, to me at any rate, why Scotland cannot compete at that level.
We do not have the physicality in the forwards, particularly the front five, to compete consistently in the scrum, breakdown areas and in defence.

The old rugby adage of “forwards win games, the backs by how much” seems a truism in the modern game.

To add to the positives of the day so far, Mike Ashley would have lost some cash as well as Sports Direct were running a half price sale at half time on England World Champions 2019 T shirts with a money back guarantee if SA won.

I would have included the Instagram link but something has happened to the advert 🙌

Totally deserved victory from SA there. Dominated the scrums and snuffed out the threats from England. Commentators are predictably sick but they have no excuses.

Thought it was a good match. Close til the last 15 mins or so. England rarely played as they can and I kept thinking, if they start to play as they can, they could still win. If they had another sustained attack like in the first half, when they had 25 or so phases and got to within a yard of the S.A. line, they could score two tries quickly I thought. It didn't happen.

S.A played a great game, to their strengths. Overall it seemed like an experienced side beating an inexperienced one. England should still celebrate. Made the final. Played superb against N.Z.

South Africa worthy champions on the day.

South Africa deserved to win, despite the embarrassingly bias English commentators looking for excuses, but there were none. You have to do more than just turn up to win a game of rugby.

The way that the nation has united behind the once thought of white supremist Springboks jersey, with the first black captain lifting the world cup means so much more than just a game of rugby.
