Terrible news. Some people will do anything for money. I don't think for a minute that the lorry driver had any idea that the journey would end so tragically, but there have been similar tragedies in the past.
So sad to think that these vulnerable people, desperate for a better life were exploited by unscrupulous mercenaries and ended up paying the ultimate price.
Not your average Sunday League player.

Most has been said, better then me.
To deprive a human being of water or oxygen is the greatest of all crimes, given our perilous existence on this earth. If we can't do that then we are worth nothing.

What would make those people take that risk?
That would be the policies of multiple governments in countries that could be doing more.

What's worrying is the locals saying this is a regular thing. How many potential other deaths have been covered up?

Watched/read a bit about this over last 24 hours and all sorts of crap coming out. Figures for migrant deaths were not held in the same way before the "Crisis" which started in 2004.
All sorts of discussions about syrians/afghan nationals being desperate to flee based on whats happening just now in the area etc.
Person arrested and publically named.
Seems we learn nothing from previous cases and actually wait on some formal information/charges before releasing details.

People smuggling is unfortunately rife in this country and it's not easy to think of a solution due to the fact that the brainwashed in many ways, including to avoid any official contact. So even in cases where the victims have a degree of autonomy they do exactly as told by their handlers and refuse any assistance offered.
The enemy travels by private jet, not by dinghy.
