 Which year was best?
Topic Originator: OzPar

My son very generously bought me a Sonos sound system for my Christmas and I am only now starting to appreciate what a brilliant piece of machinery it is.

I have linked Spotify on my iPhone to it and have spent a few hours today (the joys of retirement, eh?) creating playlists of my favourite hits in each year of the 1970s and 1980s.

These days, there are so many lists available on the internet to help you compile such things. Here's the best I have found in case you get the urge to do the same...

http://www.uk-charts.top-source.info/top-100-1973.shtml

Anyway, having ploughed through the first eight years, so far, I have come to the conclusion that 1973 was an absolutely horrible year for music.

The top song for the year was 'Tie a yellow ribbon' and the biggest record sellers were the likes of Perry Como, Jimmy Osmond and Peters and Lee. OMG, as they would say today!

In its defence, there were a handful of classics produced that year, like Fleetwood Mac's 'Albatross', Bowie's 'Life on Mars" and Carly Simon's 'You're so vain'.

1973 was also a pretty lousy time to be a Pars supporter, but fortunately for me, I spent most of that year in remote outposts in East Africa and India sailing as a young deck officer on cargo ships.

:)

That only gives the top 100 for the whole year.

Try <everyhit.com> it has every top 40 single and album up until 2011 when the BBC threatened to sue them as they own the copyright to the charts.

For me best year for music was either 1992 or 1993. Hard to choose between them.

I take it you were a big fan of Danish pop sensation Whitfield then SIF?

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I like her a lot when she was in Terry and June.
Didn't realise she was Danish or had a pop career though. 🤪

Sorry to be Mr Miserable, but the best year for music doesn't really exist.
It is a bit like asking for your favourite year as a Pars fan.

Most people (but not all) will tend to pull out a year from when they were around 12 to 25 years old, and everyone is right!

I've got a theory that musical excellence comes in cycles, and years ending in 7 tend to be pretty good. 1957 you have Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard changing the world, 67 masterpieces by The Beatles, The Doors, Velvet Underground, pushing the boundaries of creativity, 77 the energy of Punk and Disco, 87 Happy Mondays and Stone Roses bubbling under the scene and 97 Britpop reaching it's peak. Not been much happening since

I suppose it is relative what the best year was depending on your age.
For me, it would be 1980.
Great bands around like the Ants, Madness, Blondie, Skids, SLF etc.
Music of my yoof 🙂

73 - " an absolutely horrible year for music". Oz are you serious? Look at the album charts : Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John,Quadrophenia -The Who,Lets Get it On Marvin Gaye and Aladdin Sane by Bowie.

Yes we were in the midst of Glam Rock, Slade had 4 top ten singles including Merry Xmas Everbody. However our own rockers Nazareth had top ten hits with a Broken Down Angel and BAd Bad Boy. Lou Reed had A Walk on the Wild Side.

Last but not least we had Steelers Wheel with the stellar Stuck In The Middle With You.

As a young teenager I thought the music was pretty good.

Looking back over the decades I have to say 67/68 were pretty special years for music particularly singles.

As a thrash metal head (then and now) I hold 1986 as the golden year.
If you're into metal you will have at least one album from that year... If you don't... You should.
It was pretty much the pinnacle of the genre for great albums.

Sorry wetherby, I should have said UK hit singles. Yes, there were some excellent LPs including, of course, those you mention.

I was very much into prog rock and that scene was very much alive then... Floyd, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes, Genesis, etc., etc. None of which, at least then, would have come anywhere near Top of the Pops.

As a Country fan I'm still in shock from 1974 when Olivia Newton John won the CMA award for Female Vocalist of the Year.

Was gonna post the exact same mate. 1986 was musical nirvana. Master of puppets, Reign In Blood say no more.

Nonsense! My favourite Pars year was 64/65 when we beat Celtic and Rangers home and away, lost the league title by a point and the SC final to Celtic after being twice in front.....

So near and yet so far and I was.... let me see - Oh wait a minute.......🤐

Not your average Sunday League player.

Where were you in '79 when the dam began to burst?
Did you check us out down at the local show?
Were you wearing denim, wearing leather?
Did you run down to the front?
Did you queue for your ticket through the ice and snow?
Did you read the music paper from the back and to the front?
Did you find out where to see your favourite band?
Did you listen to the radio every Friday night?
Did you hang around your local record store?
Do you dream of playing guitar or smashing out the drums?
Maybe you can learn to play the bass
You can always be a singer like me and front the band
When on stage we wait at your command

Denim and leather brought us all together
It was you that set the spirit free

Despite the reference to 1979, this actually came out in 1981 along with other mind bendingly superb classics like Sabbath's "Mob Rules", Iron Maiden's "Killers","Spellbound" by the Tygers and "For those about to Rock" by AC/DC..

1981 is therefore my primo year, and I'd personally like to thank Mr. Peter Byford of Yorkshire and Mr. Thomas Vance of the BBC for saving me from Duran Duran, Martin Fry haircuts, leg warmers and "Choose Life" t-shirts...

I love you Biff, and I always will...

Didn't realise that was 81... For some reason I thought that was 84/85 ish.(just before I turned to the heavier side of metal... But obviously I'm wrong lol)
Probably just the ravages of time catching up with my old addled brain.
Yes I too was once a fan and seen them at the playhouse "back in the day".
Wheels of steel was an epic anthem.
I believe Biff had a triple bypass last year but is ok now.
I also noticed his self titled band are playing Glasgow in April....
