 Positives from Corona Virus
Topic Originator: DBP

Thought I'd take a break from all the daily doom and gloom and fast forward 6 months (assuming lockdown etc is over) and think if anything positive might come from all this...

So far I have:
1. Reduction in unnecessary commuting:
I often spend 1hr commuting each direction to sit on teleconfs all day. Yes it's good to go in and see the team members once a week, but don't need to be there 5 days a week. so potential reduction in commuting costs/pollution for me and the company doesn't need to heat/light and pay for such a big office

2. Virtual socialising:
I'm lucky in that I have a group of mates I meet up with every week (often twice a week) so have never really not had that fun/release... but I know so many blokes that don't have that, i.e. they go home from work and spend all their evenings sitting watching telly. Now, myself included, are using technology to have virtual parties, games, quiz nights and using video conferencing tools to actually see and talk to each other. Would be good if some of this stuff sticks

3. Understanding the real value of healthcare professionals:
I think nurses etc have been undervalued for years, both in terms of pay but also in terms of respect from the people they're often trying to help (otherwise there would be no need for the posters you see in A&E). Hopefully this episode will re-align their place in society

Is there anything you have noticed you/people starting to do or doing more off that would be good to keep up post corona virus?

The nation’s health has been placed above politics. We seem to have achieved a consensus of what is required. Why can’t this continue post Covid 19?
The vision of a national politician, both Westminster and Holyrood, reaches as far as the next election, a maximum of 4/5 years
Wouldn’t it be great, once this is over, for all relevant parties to get together and agree a framework for the health service we want with 10/20 year vision and funding options.

Not holding my breath.

It's a great idea but there are too many ideological differences for it to work.

Here at least in my province there will be changes after cóvid is finished.
Our province is a main link between Bangkok and the North and North Eastern provinces. My wife's office was tasked with finding suitable premises for cóvid patients to go to recover after initial hospitalisation. They have decided to use a hospital on the main highway which has a building which is unused due to expansion of the hospital. The hospital currently has no trauma facilities or A&E so rather than squander money for short term they will continue to use the facilities for A&E giving accident victims quicker access to treatment.
I see the government in UK is just going to spend onn temporary quick fixes, not exactly good use of money for the continued benefit of the NHS

Please don't book me Admin, it will ruin my life.

read on the bbc news site that indoor/garden games sales have sky rocketed... e.g. outdoor table tennis tables - hopefully that suggests families are spending time together and having fun as well

my wife also said that local suppliers who deliver veg etc are reporting large uptakes, would be good if that continued (localisation over globalisation regarding food miles, eating seasonally, etc)

It's a sad day when it's taken this for this country to adopt some socialist/ inclusive policies. A bloody disgrace if you ask me.

A positive is over the past week being confined that we have spent time as a family.... and i can say Iv enjoyed every minute.
No football practice, no dance practice and actually talking about anything was good. It’s definitely opened my eyes up and we will have 1 day all together just chilling out and having a laugh.

One positive could be that it decreases Trump's chances of being re-elected.

Is this just a temporary measure and they'll all be back on the streets when the virus crisis is over?

Apparently Edinburgh is seeing a load of new properties available for rent as the virus has impacted short term airbnb letting and its hoped it will bring the rent prices down a bit for people looking for somewhere to live.

Who knows, I'd be surprised if these individuals are tipped back out afterwards but any new folk will probably have to deal with the old broken system.

But I'm an old cynic so maybe we are looking at a new dawn.

Does anyone actually believe that rough sleeping has been ended?
I'm betting it hasn't

None, never been so bored in my life. Not being able to meet family & friends is terrible. Will definitely be making more of an effort to catch up with people after this passes.

It's only a temporary measure as there is a risk they could lead to rich people getting ill. As soon as this is over it'll be business as usual

Disagree, if this period has proved anything for me it's that absolutely nothing comes close to just having a chinwag with your mates. In person.

I'm not a fan of chatting on the apps. You feel like you have to say something and you can't really branch off with folk to have a separate chat.

The positive for me is that the study is now reasonably tidy from being forced to work from home. I've always put off working from home as it's a pain when the youngest is around the house and when the older one comes back from school. However, I've been pushed into it and it's generally fine. Quite enjoy getting up, shower, downstairs for a wee coffee and then into the den.

It's going to be harder to justify people sleeping rough using the old arguments. What we have proved with this is:

People clearly aren't choosing to sleep rough, that's a pathetic victim blaming excuse.

We can find enough accommodation, we just aren't trying hard enough.
