Does anyone know what kind of car he's got? Thinking that 300 miles without stopping to fill up is pretty good going. Working on the basis that most people won't have a full tank to go with, that's pretty good MPG. I'm assuming it must be a low emission vehicle give ln the congestion charge.

If you take 30 miles per gallon as an average (might be a bit lower for larger cars) you'd need ten gallons to travel that far and most cars hold around 12 gallons I believe so it's feasible.

You would need to be driving like a loon to get 30mpg on the motorway.

My car has a range over 600 miles.

He could have easily done a return trip without filling up.

That doesn't change the fact that he is a sub-human turd, though.

Assuming a full tank and a car with reasonable MPG. If he was getting 40+ out a Range Rover then he would be doing well.

So, just to check - one of my team lives on the West Coast. She is a single parent and all her family live in Wales. If she were to contract Coronavirus, are the Government suggesting she should jump in the car with the kids and drive down to Wales to drop the kids off? That's fine? What if she's involved in politics or has lots of money? Is it okay then?

We need to be clear that Calderwood quit after traveling a mere 30 miles. He travelled nearly 10 times that and would definitely have had to stop off for food/toilet breaks.

Even the second trip evidence doesn't look very solid at the moment.

I still think the press should be focusing on the first trip and the fact that someone saw him 30 miles from his parents' house, recognised him, wrote down the car number plate, then searched for it on the internet later that day.

I wonder how Johnson will handle it. I suppose it will just be a temporary resignation and he will be back within months to 'guide's the government through some more Brexit fun. At least childcare won't be an issue for a while.

If Johnson kicks him out properly then I think the nasty little sh1t might bring them all down out of spite. That might be worth watching, too.

Could Boris and the Bidey in no have looked after young Damian

These two statements below sum up why all is not right ....irrespective of an up and coming election or not

"In every respect, he has acted responsibly, legally and with integrity," Mr Johnson said.

It follows calls from several Tory MPs for Mr Cummings' resignation.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said Mr Johnson's decision to take no action against Mr Cummings was "an insult to sacrifices made by the British people".

Yep and all that doesn't matter Buspass. He should be sacked, he should resign but neither thing is likely to happen because there is no real pressure on Johnson. This might cost Johnson a bit of political capital in the short term but long term he's as safe as houses. The only way he can be removed as prime minister is if his party gets rid of him or the people do and the people don't get a say for another few years now.

The only justification that Cummings has is if the child has a serious health issue that he and his wife understandably want to keep private. If that is the case an off the record/not for publication briefing to editors would have meant the traditional media focussed on other strands of the current mess.

Cummings can afford to be arrogant and rude for he is embedded into the Westminster system no matter whether he is dismissed or not. Most of his life has been spent working in think tanks, project management, advisory bodies and the like for which funding never seems to be an issue. Since he worked for three years in Russia on vague projects during the days of Yeltsin I would assume Cummings is an MI6 asset. His brother-in-law – that side of his family can trace back its links to a former PM- maintains links with a Ukrainian company which has been declared to be run by gangsters but I imagine is better described as gangster capitalist.

The people who control the UK will trust Cummings more than they do Johnson, so in that sense he is fireproof. Cummings will always be supplied with funding, whether public or private, to consolidate their control so he need never be out of work. The old saying was that manners cost nothing, but to a protected species like Cummings rudeness does not cost anything either. He knows the system, how to acquire funding and power, plus he also has a great deal of information on individual politicians. Sacked by Johnson? So what. He can take his services elsewhere; in fact the Labour Party might be interested in using his talents, discretely of course.

EEP, I used 'allegedly' because, as far as I know, there has been no corroboration of the schoolteacher's sighting of Cummings. I wasn't casting doubt on his claim that he saw him, simply being cautious.

Rasta, at least we have the opportunity to turf them out if we're not happy with them. What's your alternative to having politicians?

It's not incumbent on me to supply an alternative but it's clear to see the runts of the rich being pushed into office isn't working got anyone but the wealthy....not to mention they are clearly above the law now.

Dominic Cummings, presently a powerful and wealthy 47-year old special advisor to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was hard at work in Moscow and Samara for three years, between 1994 and 1997. He has acknowledged himself that “I worked in Russia 1994-7 on various projects.” This was no news to the Russian authorities then or since; it is also an advertisement to British critics and media investigators in London that however much Cummings’ role in plotting the Brexit referendum and Johnson’s no-deal ultimatums have antagonized many, Cummings once, and still now, enjoys the protection and confidence of the British secret services.

The three Cummings years in Russia were a period of fierce undercover combat between MI6, the British foreign intelligence agency, and Russia’s reviving foreign and counter-intelligence services, successors to the Soviet KGB — the SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service), led by Yevgeny Primakov,  and the FSB (Federal Security Service)  under Sergei Stepashin and Mikhail Barsukov.

That was also the time a junior MI6 spy named Christopher Steele was running operations in the Volga region south of Moscow, starting in Samara. When his cover was blown in the spring of 1993, Steele was evacuated to home office to train replacements. Just over a year later, after graduating slowly from Oxford, Cummings’ time started in Samara. That too came to an abrupt and unsuccessful end. Cummings himself is behind the hint published in his Wikipedia profile that he “fell foul of the KGB”.   Since then Steele has become more successful at running operations and agents in Washington;  Cummings more successful on Downing Street.

But in the mid-1990s what exactly was Cummings doing in Samara and other places in Russia, for whom was he working, what contact did he have with Steele, and why was he ordered out of Russia – these are questions  Cummings was asked to explain on Monday. He refuses to answer.

Idol was in charge of the postal ballot fiasco at the last election and have been handed a £1.7million contract for the Track and Trace app with no consultation or tender process.

Peter Lilly, former Cabinet Minister and arch Brexiteer, is a former director and is still a major shareholder in Idol.

The rumour that Cummiogs' sister is currently a director hasn't been confirmed though, merely that one of the directors has a similar name to hers.

The second trip probably happened though - the witness has confirmed Cummings' numberplate and the police are investigating.

And now we have a Government Special Advisor making a public statement? Is that normal? Did Mandelson or Campbell ever have to give a public statement?

Maybe it's actually time to look into whether the role and the influence of Special Advisors is appropriate to be honest. These are unelected individuals who often operate outwith the usual scrutiny and checks that we have in place to ensure that what's left of our democracy isn't taken over by appointees.

"Spads" (they are so common that they need an abbreviation) first entered UK politics during the World Wars as expert scientific and military advisors to the government during a time of crisis. They were dispatched without a pause after the wars were over because they were considered inappropriate for a peacetime democracy.

Harold Wilson brought them back in 1964 when he brought in a few left leaning economists and their numbers have been increasing ever since. Margaret Thatcher had single figures in her early years, although one of hers was one of the first to emerge from the shadows - "everybody needs a Willie" after all.

Thatcher had doubled the number by the end of her time and every PM since has basically doubled the number of spads they employ, with Tony Blair's government essentially hiring a whole layer of the Civil Service with no accountability or oversight other than directly to the individual politicians whose skins they were hired to save.

Is it really right that we have folk like Mandelson, Cummings and Campbell in such massively powerful roles with no scrutiny or accountability?

How much pressure was put on Durham Police to release the following just now? I presume waiting for this statement has delayed his statement.

An updated statement from Durham police on their contact with Dominic Cummings’s father:

Following significant public interest over the last few days, Durham Constabulary wish to add the following to our statement of Saturday, May 23rd.
We can confirm that on April 1, an officer from Durham Constabulary spoke to the father of Dominic Cummings. Mr Cummings confirmed that his son, his son’s wife and child were present at the property. He told the officer that his son and son’s wife were displaying symptoms of coronavirus and were self-isolating in part of the property.
We can further confirm that our officer gave no specific advice on coronavirus to any members of the family and that Durham Constabulary deemed that no further action was required in that regard.
Our officer did, however, provide the family with advice on security issues.

Cummings is just digging more holes. The snobby remark about being on his father’s estate which is private property- so keep your prying eyes away- was a mistake. The claim that a good way to test your eyes is to see whether you can drive a car along a road exposes his contempt for the safety of fellow citizens. He probably is, as David Cameron mused, a psychopath. One telling feature of the psychopath is his deep seated belief that by mouthing social platitudes he can convince all of the other more stupid people around him that he is a decent person.

The story as he tells it is plausible, if you listen to his spin. He is like the devil, tells a wondrous tale and makes people believe him. However his contempt for the interpretation of the rules will be his downfall.
Cannot wait for the media hacks to uncover another stone that they probably already have in their back pocket to see it come tumbling down. The only problem is that the main parts of the story are now held within family circles and personal data, which will be the most difficult to break.

No surprise Idox are involved, they're one of the biggest companies in the UK for document management. I'd guess that almost every council in the UK uses at least one of their products (Fife Council definitely does). At one point the Scottish Government was seeking to develop their own version of a piece of IDOX software as all but a couple of the council's were using it.

EEP, your ramblings about NS make no sense.

Scotland did not have the power to shut down before the U.K. Gov gave the nod.

There was nothing that could have been done in that regard at the time.

The U.K. gov were happy for Cheltenham Races to go ahead and the Liverpool v Athletico game. In fact it was the sporting bodies themselves who shutdown , football and rugby while the UK gov were still twiddling their thumbs wondering what to do.

Their in action has undoubtedly caused thousands to die unnecessarily.
At no stage during this crisis has UK limited flights into the U.K. and there are still no tests being done in arrivals. Border control is a reserved issue. NS got slated just for having press conferences a few hours before London did, imagine the furore if she tried to shut Scottish airports? You would have been the first to criticise her. It is a moot point though as she did not have the power to do so as we are not an independent country unfortunately.

Scot gov had to wait until they got the nod from U.K. to shut down as did Wales and NI. The difference in approach has only been minimal, Scottish schools closing a couple of days before English schools for example.

You have a venal hatred of NS and the Scot gov and the independent movement yet here you are spouting tosh about things NS should have done that she has no power to do.......unless we were an independent nation.

You don’t see the irony do you ?

Or how about like for like EEP?
Lady who is CMO goes to holiday home 60 miles away in lockdown, gets papped on second trip. All comes out and she does the honourable thing, apologises profusely and resigns as it makes her position and govt message untenable.

Man who is chief SPAD makes up the lockdown rules and sits on committees, goes on a 260 mile trip to "isolate" also goes on a day trip to a local beauty spot whilst still symptomatic with C19. Comes back , gets caught by press, story breaks, everyone in cabinet rallies to his aid, press leaks more. Gives an unprecedented press call in no10 (total car crash)and refuses to apologise, admit that he was wrong and will not resign.
One did the honourable thing, the other is Dominic Cummings.

Plus Nike conference should be compared to Cheltenham. But then none of it suits your SNP/NS bad agenda. They have made mistakes but at least try to be objective in your arguments.

The Russian money you are referring to is not Russian state money: it is gangster capitalist money accrued and then invested by the cronies of Yeltsin when they grabbed state assets after the USSR was destroyed. Cummings was over in Russia during these years trying to see what loot he could bring back for himself but when Yeltsin’s drunkenness and overall ill health became an issue and the Communist Party under Zyuganov was ahead in the polls, Cummings scarpered.

A fair whack of that loot found its way into London and Putin has been putting pressure on the thieves to pay some money back. The smarter operators like Abrahmovic have invested in Russia, in areas such as education and high tech, so he has enjoyed a warm enough relationship with the Russian government. Others are wedded to the Anglo-American stock markets and live behind security systems in ‘Chelski.’ Litvenenko, the man who was poisoned by polonium, was to my certain knowledge an associate of a criminal family in Moscow region. It’s still unclear whether he was poisoned by the Russian state apparatus or a rival gangster capitalist group. So I agree there is a lot of dirty Russian money swilling around the UK and presumably influencing the politics, but I wouldn’t assume it belongs to the Russian state.

Maybe as the minister of Scotland and tell people... she is spouting her mouth off now with rules etc so what difference would it have made back then if she said lockdown before Borris?

I would imagine quite a big difference. She doesn't have the funding to lock Scotland down.,being 1 major factor!

As regards the Nike scenario a track and trace was made to the people who were there. Not really much more a government can do.

EEP is correct!

Health is devolved, the reason we are still in lockdown and England aren’t.

Our Fehrer had knowledge that a highly contagious pathogens was being spread about our community and withhold that information. Criminal in my eyes, makes me wonder why she has us still under house arrest when in Fife no new case in 5 days !

They must think our heads button up at the back. Two hours of absolute drivel! When will the British public wise up to these charlatans?

Make up some catchy slogans Display them everywhere and repeat their message ad nauseam. It worked for Brexit and the GE - aided and abetted by a feckless opposition. Now we have Boris' Brain caught with his pants down. Unbelievably, he's given a slot on prime time national TV to defend the indefensible, in the garden of No.10....

He concots a specious story line, which my 6 year old granddaughter wouldn't swallow and reads it out from a prepared statement. When the media start to question him, he is unable to look any of them in the eye, but just keeps repeating bits of the statement he'd read out, stuttering, stammering, humming and hawing throughout. His leg was twitching uncontrollably under the desk, too. It would be interesting to hear what a psychologist would make of it.

The man is an unscrupulous, pathological liar, imo. His narrative is full of holes and yet there are people out there - and on this forum, even - who are prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. A lie is a lie, no matter how many times it is repeated. Of course, the person repeating the lie may well convince himself that it's true. In this case, Cummings might even pass a lie detector test.

Even worse, Johnson knows Cummings is lying through his teeth but he will not sack him because he isn't smart enough to operate as PM without his guiding hand. Much will depend on the Press now. If they don't let up, Cummings will become a political millstone around the Government's neck and he will be asked to resign. (BJ will still be able to use him unofficially.) They might try to deflect attention by coming up with some good news - what odds for a "vaccine by Christmas "?

By giving him the benefit of the doubt, they are tacitly condoning his actions and by extension, defending him, imo. We don't have to prove anything or even call him a liar to his face. We can evaluate his account of events and come to our own conclusions.

Did he really think nobody would check? Apparently he altered it the day he got back from Durham.

Dominic Cummings is facing questions about his claim in Monday’s press conference to have written last year about the “possible threat of coronaviruses” after it emerged that a blogpost published in March 2019 was rewritten last month to insert a reference to “Sars coronavirus”.

The post, published to his personal blog on 4 March last year, is largely a lengthy excerpt from research published in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists warning about the risks of viruses escaping secure laboratories.

In April 2020, the excerpt was edited to add a quote about a “well-publicised incident in China in which ‘two researchers conducting virus research were exposed to severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) coronavirus samples that were incompletely inactivated. The researchers subsequently transmitted Sars to others, leading to several infections and one death in 2004.’”.

The article is the only mention of the word “coronavirus” on Cummings’ personal blog.

Something about all this just doesn't add up. I'm not usually one of the tin foil hat brigade but I cannot understand why Johnson hasn't given this guy the chop. Struggling to see what he is gaining politically from keeping him on now, in fact it is hurting him politically. He isn't a member of parliament so if he gets punted he won't be sniping from the backbenches. He is just an aide, a civil servant essentially, who is only of benefit to governing party not the country at large so why isn't he being released? Loyalty can be an admirable trait but I don't think anyone truly believes that's what is being shown here.

The last paragraph of the article really sums everything up.
Johnson is a small man who should never have been anywhere near 10 Downing Street.

I think every PM of every colour has had at least three or four leadership qualities that more-or-less justified their position. Johnson only has one. He is 'likeable'. Apart from that he is an empty vessel.

Cummings provided Johnson with the key to number 10 via Brexit and the December election, although Corbyn unwittingly helped. Now that Corbyn is gone Johnson will hang on to Cummings as though his (political) life depended on it.

This is what happens when people vote on the basis of personalities rather than policies.

At the last election I ended up arguing with someone in my team as she berated me for not voting SNP. I asked her about her new MP. She knew nothing about him and I quote "just put my cross in the box next to the SNP logo". She had no clue about what policies he was endorsing/supporting or what his goals for the area were.

It’s just a sad state of affairs how much attention this has had, totally takes away the focus and national effort on getting out of this situation.

I watched the interview and there are areas where I could sympathise and areas which are clearly false.

I have a four year old, if my wife was down ill with COVID symptoms and I was ill as well, then there would be a genuine concern about who’s going to look after my son and I’d be more inclined to reach out to someone within my family for support. I wouldn’t go to neighbours etc as quite frankly I wouldn’t trust them.

So to be fair I get that bit.

The story he’s put together on how he got that support though is clearly fudged. The eyesight thing reminds me of Prince Andrew and his sweating!

He wasn’t well liked before this happened which hasn’t helped his cause and he’s openly accused the press of reporting false stories which also doesn’t work in his favour.

I doubt he’ll be fired or resign, they’ll ride it out and it will be all forgotten about in a couple of months.

Prince Andrew again a good example, don’t recall hearing anything in the news about him recently.

Towk I honestly believe its the Russian connection

We have never seen the paper published on the Russian interference on both the Leave vote and the General election

It never was and it is being watered down and redacted to protect both Boris the Brave and the weasel

Ach it just gets better and better :-

A council is investigating complaints that the property Dominic Cummings used during his lockdown trip did not have the correct planning permission.

The PM's adviser stayed with his family in what he said was a "cottage" on his parents' farm in Durham, in April.

The only planning applications listed on the council's website for the farm are for a roof over a swimming pool in 2001, and the removal of various trees.

Durham County Council and a local MP have received a number of complaints.
Downing Street has declined to comment.

And better and better although this article is old His blog was from last year

A farm part-owned by Boris Johnson's Brexit adviser Dominic Cummings received £235,000 in EU funding despite him attacking subsidies as "absurd," it has been revealed.

Analysis of public data on subsidies by The Observer confirmed that Mr Cummings' farm in Durham, which he jointly owns with his parents and another person, received almost £195,000 between 2000 and 2009.

The parents of the former Vote Leave boss also received several payments of around £6,500 each for "practices beneficial for climate and environment" over the past two years.

Mr Cummings, recently hired as Prime Minister Boris Johnson's chief aide, has previously been highly critical of the EU subsidy system.

He argued in his personal blog last year that the payments "raise prices for the poor to subsidise rich farmers."

The mastermind behind the Brexit PR campaign claimed the subsidies were "absurd" and said they allowed "very rich landowners to do stupid things".

EEP I think his punishment from Boris the Brave was to give the media his statement ...you could see how uncomfortable he was reading from a prepared script ....I have no sympathy for the man

A lot of people are in a bad place right now, most of them through no fault of their own.

A lot of people are also dead, again through no fault of their own.

If he's in a bad place because his actions caused him personal blowback rather than because his actions have caused suffering in others then that says all we need to know about the man.

Are we talking about a bad place as in mental health or a bad place because of his delayed operation?

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd
