Bob Sinclar did a pretty decent disco mix for Glitterbox:

If anyone likes their house music it's basically a whose who of the original samples that were used for a lot of tracks folk will know.

I also have "now that's what I call music" (the first one) on vinyl.
And I've no recollection why I have it in my collection.... But I can guarantee I didn't buy it 😏

There were a couple of cheap record labels back in the late '60s/'70s. One was Music for Pleasure, which seemed to have a contract with EMI, as it released a chunk of old EMI albums under the MFP label at less than half the normal price.

This included the soundtrack to South Pacific, which I am pretty sure I bought in Woolies in Perth, and still play to this day. Another was the incredibly interesting Pink Floyd album Relics, which was probably MFP's bestseller as it hit the album charts at the time.

The other label was called Top of the Pops (Volume 1, 2, 3, etc). You could buy these in pretty much every high street John Menzies shop, not that I ever did. You would often hear them being played at house parties.

They were rip-offs of the original hits played by session musicians. There were some pretty famous names among those sessionists - like David Bowie and Elton John, who soon after went on to stardom.

I bet those cheap albums with songs sung by those guys are chased by collectors and are worth a bob or two today...

'Woollies' used to sell cover versions of hit singles on the Embassy label.

MFP was part of the EMI empire, one of the major league music industry groups, who at one time (during their previous incarnation) had acquired Capitol Records based in Los Angeles.

MFP was essentially previously released popular material given a second outing on a budget label, or more specialised tastes such as brass and military bands etc. where punters were reluctant to pay full price.

"Wasn't there another budget label called "Nice Price" or something?"

That was a special promotion from CBS Records - which turned out to be a nice little earner for them if memory serves.

They were naughty on at least one ocassion back in 1980s - The Highwaymen's first album was only originally released on vinyl and cassette - then when Compact Disk came around shortly afterwards it was released on CD in the UK (with slightly different artwork from the LP and tape) on CBS "Nice Price" deal - thank you very much, I'll have one of these, thanks to local Woolies.

When the group came over to tour a year or two later the budget version disappeared briefly and the full price CD, with original artwork, was being punted - specifically aimed at concert sales I suspect.

The record industry at its cynical best !!!

Their second and third albums were both given a regular price release on all popular formats.

CBS also did a very successful "I Love Country" budget series around that time, (originating from French production facilities I think) featuring top artists of that period.

Quite depressing that my kids won't experience going to a record store on album release day to get a new album and not be able to listen until you get home. Instead they'll just load Spotify.

Not in Dunfermline. I'm in Aberdeen but when I stayed in Dunfermline I would often go over to Edinburgh for an album release

Even Edinburgh is getting light on record shops. Avalanche not the same since leaving Cockburn Street IMO. Coda gone, Virgin gone, I think both HMVs are now gone. Believe Vinyl Villains is still down Elm Row.

I'm not even sure if Dunfermline still has a CD section in WH Smith as the post office is down there now.

It'd be great to have a wee record shop in Dunfermline again but I suppose it's a limited market. Even those wee gems you'd get in Avalanche and the like can be easily sourced on the internet.

Vinyl Villains on Leith Walk used to be decent but I've not been in there in years.

Underground Solushn is on Cockburn Street if you're a dance fan and Fopp still has a vinyl section although its not a patch on the old flagship store on Cockburn Street pre the HMV takeover.

Grouchos in Dundee used to be good too.

The old Boots on the High Street would be a great record shop. Plenty of space for browsing. Shame it's currently like a big Ali's Cave.

Must be hard on all these retailers when things can be sourced on the internet but there must surely be a way of making these things work. Perhaps shop with cafe? Or link in with a wee arcade?

Europa records in Stirling is good Huge selection
Green Cat in Dunbar is worth a look ..as is Wall of noise in Haddington

The charity shops down Stockbridge also unearth a wee gem now and then but they have wised up to the worth of some albums now ..they must do a wee bit research before they price them ...but still good

My favourite shop back in the day was the Pink Panther in Carlilse

Anyone remember the original Virgin record shop in Glasgow, circa 1971/72?

It was nothing like the Virgin superstores that came about a few years later, but what a pick-up joint!!!

If you were looking for totty that was into Led Zep and King Crimson and Pink Floyd, well that was the place to go...

Happy memories for an old codger like me... sadly, memories is all I have these days.

:)
