There are some cracking pics of the Silver Sands doing the rounds on social media this evening. You can't actually see any sand. They make Bournemouth and Brighton look positively abandoned. I'm not on Facebook and I don't know how to upload these pics in any case. Maybe someone can oblige?

Portobello beach packed as well with the police having to respond to outbreaks of trouble by all accounts.

Portobello was some scene today, I was guiding a bike tour with a young family from Belgium. I was embarrassed. Aw the youth half cut, more than half naked, blasting music out of speakers left right n centre and groups of 50 upwards all over the shop. Cans n bottle n other ***** strewn everywhere.

As stated above, plenty of police around, it was all very tense.

Towk trust me we live in NB and the amount of foreign and English visitors in the last 3 months is very disturbing

I have seen two polis once since March on fancy quad bikes patrolling the beach when there was no bugger on it ??

They come from all over Towk mainly North of England... There are steading cottages down the road from me and they have never been empty this year so far mainly Geordie's

The Town is heaving with visitors and holiday folk :(

I'm not going to argue with that, Steven, but that suggests we have a lot more than one per village then........

Does anyone have any pics they can put up and we could see if we recognise any of them?

We were at the beach by Dunbar today. Started off fine but we chose to leave as it was getting ridiculous. Definitely not just locals given the nearby campsite is completely booked! Heard plenty of weegie, Irish and English accents. Okay, may still live local but doubtful. Summer holidays, plenty staycationing and a sunny day.

I agree with da_no_1 on this one, going to beach isn't against the law, there's been how many deaths in Scotland from Covid in the past fortnight?

It's a lovely sunny day and people have spent the last 6 months, by and large abiding by social distancing and not socialising, I think it's a bit out of order to start sneering at those who went to the beach.

Ah, it was sarcasm! There was me thinking you were asking a straight question, so I did you the courtesy of giving you a straight reply. I should have known by now that you are incapable of such normal respectful behaviour.

A "few folk go to the beach"? Come on. Are you really that stupid? Yes, I guess you are.

Sneering? You give it a rest. When you are experiencing your second lockdown you are not sneering. You are angry that there are complacent fools who think they can act irresponsibly without consequence.

Also a mass brawl at the meadows in Edinburgh yesterday.
There is a definite difference in mentality for different people. If it was getting too busy to social distance then it is reasonable to consider going home. Nothing wrong with going. I have been to the beach recently with my grandchildren and there was very few people around. However if I saw that many people I I would be off.
Incidentally I also recently visited Rannoch and the lady who runs the cafe at the station says that even during lockdown many people were travelling to this remote region and behaving irresponsibility. Not just beaches.

I’ve been to Nairn beach twice in the last few weeks in order to walk my daughter’s Airedale. On both occasions the beach has been well nigh deserted. As others have suggested, it’s not where you choose to go so much as what you find when you get there. It’s clearly impractical to walk a dog on a busy beach in any case, but had we found a great crowd of sand, sea and sun aficionados present then we would have, I feel certain, deemed it unsafe and sought an alternative location for the walk with the dog.

Looking at this photo, I'm wondering what da no 1's definition of "A few folk" is.

To be clear, I don't think everybody who headed for a beach yesterday, whether it was Aberdour, Portobello, N. Berwick or anywhere else, is an idiot, but if the place was already mobbed and they squeezed into a small space anyway, it's hard to escape the conclusion that there's not a lot going on between their ears.

That one was posted before midday so it might be the case it got busier over the course of the day. One of my mates posted that they were going to go but turned away when they saw the cars were parked up to the main road so it sounds pretty busy.

I dont get the Aberdour obsession. If you live in Fife, you are a 45 minute drive from about 100 miles of beach. Why the need to cram in the little bit of sand there.

This pic certainly looks less crowded than the one Raymie posted further up, but how do you know it's more accurate, moviescot? Could it not simply have been taken earlier in the day? Grant posted the same link as you and suggested Raymie's had no ''depth perception'' but I've seen others, taken from the rear of the beach looking out to sea, looking equally busy. Someone I know thought she'd head for Aberdour but did a 360° turn at the roundabout just before the village, when she saw the nose to tail traffic. A former colleague, who lives in Aberdour, said cars parked on the village's main artery through it made it almost impossible for moving traffic to get through. Even Mill Farm Road had a line of cars parked along its length. Whichever way you slice it, there were a lot of people there.

''I must've imagined the reports that say the chances of catching Covid-19 outdoors are very low.

Again, they're only going to the beach on a nice day. It's not a crime. Yet.''

I can't argue with that, da, but you gave me a politician's answer to my question which was ''How many people constitute 'a few folk' in your book? Nothing at all wrong with anyone wanting to go down to the beach on a hot, sunny day, especially this summer when it's been difficult to go abroad, but maybe you'll concede that it perhaps wasn't the best idea ever, given how busy it turned out to be?

I hear what you're saying, JTH, but your football analogy is an unfortunate one. Look no further than Hillsborough to see how potentially disastrous it can be to cram too many people into too small a space. I take da. no. 1's point that you're less likely to catch Covid-19 outdoors, but why expose yourself to even a low risk when it's unnecessary? As I said further up, I don't have a problem with people going to the beach, but given we're in the middle of a pandemic, I'd either not have gone in the first place, or packed up early when it started getting really busy.

I showed the pic Raymie posted to my son today and he was very sceptical about it. He reckons it might be an old photo from some years back. He asked me how I knew it was taken on Friday and of course, I don't.

"why expose yourself to even a low risk when it's unnecessary?"

I think it is all about the perception of risk, and unfortunately this pandemic isn't doing much to educate people.

For most of the under 40s on the beach, the most dangerous thing they did on Friday was probably driving to get there, crossing a road, or swimming in the sea. That might even be the case for people up to 50 or 60 who are in good health.

We are indeed "in the middle of a pandemic", but unfortunately we will probably be in the middle of this pandemic for years to come.

GG it's not an unfortunate analogy at all. Your comparison is nonsense IMHO. If you act based on your analogy you wouldn't leave the house. No, wait. What if a car crashes into the house or a sinkhole opens up under you?
As others have said, it's about risk assessment and perception of risk.
I am not a person who generally takes inadvised risks. I've been on holiday this week and have had my family at Aberdour on Wednesday, Craigtoun Park on Friday and Kinghorn yesterday. Each time we placed ourselves with plenty of space around us. Apparently in the eyes of some this makes me an idiot.

You're not an idiot if you take the correct precautions which you seem to have done. This does not preclude the fact that there are some idiots about. They are the people who will make the pandemic last longer and possibly put us back in lockdown.

Totally agree Moviescot. Unfortunately everyone on beaches were branded idiots by certain individuals on here a couple of days ago.

Jeezo!

I wasn't going to reply because ultimately you are entitled to do what you want to do but you seem upset.

Going to the beach on a 'normal' day I don't have an issue with. Going to the beach on a 'taps aff' day whether you or are distancing or not to me seems not to be a wise decision.

Do what you want to do, fill your boots but I feel there may be restrictions put in place because of certain situations that have occurred or may occur in the near future.

Ooft! You've extrapolated quite a bit from what I said and it's well wide of what I was trying to convey. Maybe it's my fault that I didn't make it clear enough for you. I was merely trying to say that if you take yourself into a heavily crowded area, your chances of catching the virus will increase, even if you are outdoors. I wasn't suggesting you should stay in the house in lockdown mode as you seem to think. You appear to have taken very reasonable precautions when you and your family were out last week, so I certainly won't be indulging in any name calling.

What does it matter? In a weeks time all those kids will be back at school with no social distancing in place.

SP77 I'm not upset. It takes quite a lot to be honest. I just didn't appreciate the sweeping generalisation and see that you are not deviating from it.

GG you made the enormous leap from finding a safe, comfortable place to watch a match to Hillsborough. But I extrapolated too much?!

''GG you made the enormous leap from finding a safe, comfortable place to watch a match to Hillsborough. But I extrapolated too much?!''

Ach it wasn't exactly a quantum leap, JTH, was it? Here's what you said :-

''For those intent on being front and centre maybe GG but you've been to enough fitba in the auld days to know that while there will be areas where you can't move there will also be others where you can get some space and still have a good time.''

From that, it was easy for me to associate the danger of overcrowding in one area of a football ground ''in the auld days'' to the potentially fatal Covid-19. Maybe I got a bit carried away, but there was no deliberate intent to mislead you or anyone else.

Good posts from Buspass and allparone above, illustrating the confused and chaotic state of play in the UK at the moment.

GG I'm surprised you're fooled by Buspasspars post. It isn't a good post. Just a slavering rant. It offers no answers, just slaughters whoever is in charge.

I've been furloughed for nearly 16 weeks, luckily I'm one of the few on full pay, but all the while worried about whether the company will survive this. For those of us not retired, the country needs to get moving again, obviously with measures in place to reduce risk. That means education, manufacturing, hospitality, tourism, entertainment, sport all need to start up again, however safely & slowly.

We might not like the decisions Boris & Nicola make but they have to be made, and they might have to be changed somewhere down the line. It's a bit immature to rant about things opening then closing. It's pretty bloody obvious that it was going to happen.

Until there's a vaccine I suspect nothing will change. Flu can kill a vulnerable person but we don't lockdown when someone catches it. That's because those vulnerable people have access to a vaccine.

The reason this virus continues to exist and kill people, especially in England and Wales right now, is because people can't follow basic guidance.

I wasn't fooled by BPP's post at, da. Yes, it's a bit of a rant, but it's quite funny and it does highlight the confusional aspect. It's not his job to provide solutions to the problems the UK is facing. That's why politicians vie for election - with the power comes responsibility. BPP is fully occupied as Victor Meldrew stand in.

I have to say that, other than the care home fiasco, Nicola Sturgeon is doing a decent job. The PM on the other hand, has been taking the pi$$ out of us all, aided and abetted by that clown Cummings. I understand your concerns. It's not a nice state of affairs to not know whether you'll have a job to go back too, when this is over. In my whole life I was unemployed for 10 weeks, 6 of which were during the school holidays and it felt like 10 months.

I hope things work out for you and for our country. It's not good for any of us, including those who are retired, for the present situation to go on indefinitely. Trouble is, nobody has any idea how long it will last. The Government may well feel they have no option but to go back to their original "herd immunity " err, strategy.

Hopefully there will be a decent length of time that resistance/antibodies stay active in the system, or the 'herd immunity' will be a busted flush too :-/

Without a vaccine, and assuming that we can't lockdown forever, there are not many options left.

Too many selfish people who won't or can't follow guidance or rules for social distancing, masks and hand washing to be effective enough.

Look at all the nuggets paying £200 to get into a disco 5 miles from a lockdown area - jeez.

Luckily sunny hot days are a rarity in Scotland. The way things are going in many other countries, particularly England then it looks to me like a second lockdown will be inevitable. Don’t think Boris and Co will introduce a nationwide lockdown but selective isolated lockdowns. Will be similar here I would think.

Do you have a link to this, Lux? I'm finding it difficult to believe that anyone could be so crazy, but sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Disbelief as nightclub located less than six miles from northern lockdown area at centre of coronavirus spike concerns becomes FIRST in the country to reopen - with some revellers paying up to £200 for entry
