(Seen images on BBC news) What's all the smoke - or if as you say a bridge has collapsed, might that be dust from shifting bridge debris?

I take it no reporters are allowed to get close before relatives are informed. I could see about ten ambulances all parked, but there's no sign of them taking people away to hospital.

Awful stuff , reports coming out that engine with four carriages derailed and ended up down an embankment. Serious injuries and at least one fatality :(

I think it must be very bad if no reporters allowed to get close.

Hoping beyond hope that with it being an early train, not many passengers aboard.
Just tragic all the same.

Hopefully and with lockdown in Aberdeen there hopefully should be a very small contingent by the time it reaches stonehaven

I believe there were only 12 people on board. 6 passengers and 6 staff. Tragically 3 deaths.

Yeah considering the time of day and the Aberdeen lockdown situation I didn't think there would be many passengers.
Just as well possibly.
Tragic

a 7am accident that was only notified to emergency services at 09:47 on the concern when billowing smoke was seen must be a huge concern.

I'm not sure the accident did happen at 7 unless that's been confirmed and I missed it?

From what I read the train had reached another landslide and had to turn back and then unfortunately hit the landslide that took it off the tracks and I don't think that happened within 20 mins of departure.

Could be wrong though!

There have been no reports that I have read to say that the accident was at 7:00.

Not sure what time the accident happened exactly but considering the train driver and the conductor were both killed then that might explain why it was apparently a member of the public that first raised the alarm.

Local paper reporting accident took place at around 940. Emergency services informed at 945. Not sure these have been verified.

Train appears to have reached stonehaven and continued on. After being stopped due to landslide ahead it took the decision to try and return to Aberdeen when a further landslide caused it to crash.

A 6:38 train from Aberdeen would normally take about 18/20 to reach stonehaven. However the conditions in Aberdeen at the time were atrocious with driving rain, thunder and lightning. So the journey time may have been impacted. Not sure how long it stayed in stonehaven or how long it waited after leaving. It would probably have had to sit a while. Presumably as they then decided to return they would have had to switch engines. Not sure how long this would take
There does seem still to be a large time gap between when the train reached the first landslide and the time the emergency services were informed.

Of course we are not aware of the state of the passengers and crew. They may have not been in any fit state to report the incident so this could be part of the reason for delay.

I'm not sure I understand the problem with The Sun's front page.
It's a bit tasteless, but it's a paper edited by c***s and read by c***s so I'm not sure what people expect.

No. I should clarify that I don't find it acceptable in any way.
I just don't find it surprising and I don't know what anyone can do about it.

I have great admiration for train drivers awareness based upon what I have previously seen. Around Dunkeld there was a train that wouldn’t have much time to react to a fallen tree that was around a bend. The train had managed to stop within a few feet of the tree. Up till that point I had never really considered the dangers that are posed daily to trains and there drivers. It is a terrible tragedy and my thoughts go to everyone involved.

Staff from that rag also reported to have doorstepped the families. Quite a measured response from the railway family which would encourage anyone who doesn't think this behaviour or front page is acceptable to register a complaint via IPSO; clause 4 covers it.

An off duty rail worker who survived the crash walked a mile to raise the alarm.....might explain the delay.

Very little delay.... RAIB have released initial information;

"At around 09:40 hrs on Wednesday 12 August 2020, all six vehicles of a passenger train derailed after striking a landslip around 1.4 miles (2.25 km) north-east of Carmont, Aberdeenshire."

This would mean a delay of a few minutes, their time line will be based on evidence gathered so far from recorded voice-comms and other sources.
