 Face Masks in Cars
Topic Originator: GG Riva

I've lost count of the number of people wearing a face mask in a car, while travelling alone.

Maybe someone could explain the logic behind that, as it has me completely baffled?

It’s good practice. Putting on and removing a mask every time you enter and exit somewhere means that you’re touching your mask with your hands more than you should. Keeping it on for longer means your less likely to transfer infection to the mask from your hands.

Some hilarious posts on this thread, with only allparone attempting to provide a serious answer, which is both logical and plausible, but I'm not convinced that it's strictly accurate.

My thinking is that many of these people are terrified of catching the virus - perhaps because they are in a particularly group, due to existing health problems - and believe that wearing a mask at all times - maybe even in their own homes - will provide the extra protection and security they crave.

The only flaw in that is that face masks are only effective if everybody wears them - or so the medics and scientists tell us.

OK GG, how about this theory. These people have went to the shops and put their masks on. They have then touched surfaces and until they have washed their hands they aren't going to put their hands anywhere near their face or mouths and thus won't be removing the mask.
Also could it be that they have simply forgotten they are wearing a mask? I usually take my mask off the second I'm back outside but occasionally make it all the way back to the car before remembering.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

So you would have to sanitise your car door, steering wheel, gear stick and all other items before you take your mask off. Not to mention your mobile phone, door handle to your home, and sterilising the outside of steriliser bottle going by that logic.

No idea Thaipar if that's what you'd have to do. Pretty sure I didn't say that but if my theory is correct (and it almost certainly isn't) then the people who wear their masks all the time aren't going to touch their face to remove the mask until they have sanisitised their hands. Maybe they haven't got a bottle of hand sanitiser with them.

Yes, that's a very plausible hypothesis. (A hypothesis only becomes a theory when it's been tried and tested and is in agreement with all the facts - apologies for the science lesson. ☺)

Like you, I'm very uncomfortable wearing a face mask and normally remove it as soon as I'm outside, but occasionally, I've walked 10 yards outdoors with it still on. I have reading glasses and they're a nightmare in the supermarket. They steam up straight away so I have to put them on and take them off again and again.

Edited to add - The Android app does not appear to cope with abbreviations very well. Not sure why I get ' for a simple apostrophe.

Surely it's up to people if they want to wear it in the car or not?

Mine is straight off due to my glasses steaming up or slipping off as they have no ear grip due to the mask. Absolute nightmare.

Jake, I'm not denying anyone the right to wear a face in their car, whether travelling with other passengers or alone. I was asking folk for plausible explanations as to why they would feel it necessary to do so, in the latter scenario, as it had me stumped.

I've no idea why either. Maybe it gives them comfort. When I picked in-laws up from the airport earlier in the year they had the head screens and everything so I wore the mask...until my glasses steamed up and I couldn't see to drive. I figured safer me risking covid than driving into another car/wall.

Maybe they want to get home and wash their hands before they start fiddling with their mask, or they are picking someone up. Or they are a taxi driver.

Who knows.

Jake, put your mask on 1st ,then make sure your mask is high enough for it to sit under your glasses on the bridge of your nose, works every time for me

Have given that a go but means my glasses fall off if I look down. Thinking of getting some rubber grips for where the legs sit on my ears.

You can get a shoe string with eyelets, which goes round your neck, for the legs so that if they do fall off they won't hit the ground, Jake.
