 Old Orient/Robins cinema

Noticed when I went past at the weekend that work seems to be going on. Has someone finally bought it? Was always a shame that it had its inside ripped out but I always hoped it'd reopen as a cinema again.

Assume just the facade. When the Marr brothers bought it they ripped the whole interior out, floors and all.

Apart from a cinema, the old layout wouldn't have been of much use. It's a shame the Sports Bar concept failed but the subsequent change into an 80s club was surely obvious to have limited appeal. Can't comment on what the upstairs was used for. I think the only positive was the dirty sods could easily jump on a bus to Townhill or Abbeyview 😂

I'm sure Ghoulz would know the answer to this, but I always found it odd that the Kinema had such a name. I've seen a few mentions in the media where people have mistakenly assumed the Kinema was once a cinema whereas my understanding is it was originally a dance hall before going through various periods as a venue/nightclub before being a buffet restaurant.

That would be the Kinema Ballroom.
There was a small cinema called The Kinema- maybe the oldest in Dunfermline- between a church and the central post office.

The Kinema ended up as a Bingo Hall, still being used in the Seventies.

In the early 1960s I recall four working cinemas in Dunfermline - the Regal in the High Street, the Alhambra at the corner of New Row and Canmore Street, the (Palace) Kinema on Pilmuir Street and the Cinema at East Port.

There’s a very good website by a bloke called Gourlay which covers the history of cinemas in Dunfermline and Rosyth. The dates first opened are as follows:
The Olympia (1911) which became The Regal (1931)
The Cinema (1913)
The Kinema (1915) The Kinema Ballroom opened in 1938
The Alhambra (1925)

Here’s a football connection. Anyone know who Dorothy is? She’ll be 87 if she’s still about.

8th March 1953:
Dunfermline’s ‘Miss Lovely To Look At’ - Miss Dorothy Kerr (20) will, after presentations at The Regal Picture House, appear at The Kinema Ballroom to present the prize of a perm to The Ballroom’s own ‘Miss Lovely To Look At’ (Miss Margaret Russell of Edinburgh judged by George Niven of Rangers FC, Bobby Kirk of Dunfermline Athletic FC & William McNaught of Raith Rovers FC. This was to promote the MGM musical film ‘Lovely To Look At` (1952).

I was a projectionist there in the early 1990s, it`s a real shame that the desctruction of the interior was allowed. I read somewhere that it was Scotland`s oldest purpose built cinema and the first permanent installation of talkies in Scotland. Not sure how true either of those things are though.

Thanks sammer ... I am that bloke called Gourlay!

The Kinema Ballroom was purpose-built as a dance hall ... Dunfermline`s first.

https://www.kinemagigz.com/cinemas%20and%20theatres.htm

The name `Kinema` came about because the owners` (`The Palace Kinema (Dunfermline) Ltd`) first venture was a moving picture theatre called `The Palace Kinema` on Pilmuir Street south of and adjacent to the North Congregational Church (both now demolished initially in favour of a car park and now the current bus station)

`Kinematics` is the scientific study of motion, especially human motion, and the word originates from the Greek word `κινειν` (to move) hence moving picture theatres became known as `Kinemas` and later `Cinemas`.

Calling a dance hall a `Kinema` is quite appropriate, as there`s a great deal of human motion going on!
