 Graphics Card

Can anyone enlighten me. My boy`s PC needs a new graphics card apparently, but when I try to get the one he wants or one that`s even remotely close to it, there`s none to be had. Not even on Amazon.

Is there some kind of shortage of cards at the moment?

There`s been a shortage of graphics cards and CPUs since the first lockdown hit basically.

It started when the US government gave folk a handout and everyone seemed to want to use it to update their PC, presumably since they would be at home more.

High end ones went the same way as PS5 unfortunately.

Scalpers snapping them all up to punt for Stupid, stupid money as Wotsit was alluding to.

What sort of stuff is he looking to run?

Shortage is due in large part to people buying graphic cards to mine Ethereum (virtual currency basically). People are buying pallet loads of high end GPUs/gaming laptops and using them to generate revenue.

He's a gamer and he's wanting an nvidia one. Said it was about £400, but there's none on ebuyer. I just thought scalpers was to do with concert tickets. Bizarre

So, the chances of getting the one he wants are virtually zilch?

Do you know which model in the NVIDIA range? Overclockers has some RTX 3080 in stock but they are pricey. Not sure of it was a lower model?

I got one for my son in November and I`m glad I did because the price has gone up 50 percent since then.

What is his current graphics card, and can he make it last a bit longer? If he is after a 3060 or 3070 it might be best to wait a while for the prices to come down a bit.

Think it was the 3060 version. None of them in stock there

Yeah I've got a laptop so don't normally follow the price of graphics cards too much and I was surprised at the prices these days too.

NVidea prices are pretty crazy to start with, before their low supply numbers and scalpera got to them. I'd even look to see if you can find a 2080 series card from them or something. Personally went for an AMD 5700xt last year for around £400 iirc so hopefully I won't need to upgrade again anytime soon (do play at 4k generally though)

My advice would be to hold on, or go for an AMD 5700xt like Andrew283 which might be more available and closer to its recommended price.

I was lucky enough to get a 3070 in November and I paid less than the 3060s that are available now. Hopefully the prices will come down again soon.

I would add, that the 5700xt card has known issues. Some may come out the box and you will have no problems whatsoever, but with mine, it seriously hates older games, crashes constantly etc. I've had to go into the AMD settings and undervolt and underclock it to make it stable. It's a powerful card, but there's also a risk of buying one if you're not keen on doing some alterations to it in the settings

Good advice on here.

Unless he's planning on doing really high end 4k stuff or VR then you'd get away with a 1660ti 6gb and should be future proofed enough for a good while yet.

I'm still running a GTX970 which was the dugs baws when i got it but seems such a long time ago now.

What i' saying is kids don't need a top end 3070 (or whatever has superseeded it by now) for playing Fortnite and Warzone just because the streamers they watch on FB and Twitch have one.

High end tech is a bit like a high end car in that it is often operating on the ragged edge of what`s possible, meaning that it goes wrong more often and needs more attention to keep it working as it should.

Something like a 1080ti or equivalent will have stable drivers and firmware so it`ll likely just work in most situations.
