 The Disinformation Dozen

The Rolling Stone magazine reports this week that The White House has turned its attention toward social media platforms that allow the spread of Covid-19 misinformation as the federal government tries to promote vaccinations across the country.

On Thursday, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared misinformation to be an “urgent threat” to public safety.

At a briefing on Thursday, Press Secretary Jen Psaki outlined changes the administration has asked the companies to make in order to combat misinformation.

They have asked the companies to “measure and publicly share the impact of misinformation on their platform” with the public. They also proposed creating a “robust enforcement strategy that bridges their properties and provides transparency about the rules” and improving the time it takes to remove a post that contains misinformation. Lastly, she said, the administration recommended platforms “promote quality information sources in their feed algorithm.”

“[There are] about 12 people who are producing 65 percent of anti-vaccine misinformation on social media platforms,” Psaki added. “All of them remain active on Facebook, despite some even being banned on other platforms, including… ones that Facebook owns.”

That stat comes from a report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, which calls these people the “disinformation dozen.” And those 12 posters also account for 73 percent of anti-vax misinformation on Facebook alone.

“Living in full view of the public on the internet are a small group of individuals who do not have relevant medical expertise and have their own pockets to line, who are abusing social media platforms to misrepresent the threat of Covid and spread misinformation about the safety of vaccines,” the center’s CEO, Imran Ahmed, wrote in the report.

Sounds like the beginnings of widescale censorship by governments worldwide. So only their version of events is available. Orwellian

For what it’s worth I agree with the above, a lot of misinformation out there, it needs to stop, as does a lot of the misleading information pro vaccine also.

Biden is one of the gauleiters of false information, a man whose political career was founded upon false information. He did not just vote foe the Iraq invasion but actively acted to make it happen. He is a war criminal in any understood form of the term. Weapons of mass destruction etc etc, things that it turned out that Iraq never had but America did. The USA would not have invaded otherwise.

There are many bodies in Iraq and American cemeteries as a result of his actions, although is own son is not one them. That is par for the course. Would anyone listen to such a man on the topics of either disinformation or death?

Surely social media is just that; anyone posting anything. No real difference than sitting in a pub listening to people just saying anything that comes into their heads.
As long as we know and acknowledge that, there is a laugh in there sometimes, some piece of information that is of interest (and prompts us to confirm if true or not), some absolute rubbish, etc.

I think the more pressing problem is that of the so-called mainstream media; those publications that do not provide confirmed factual information, but are biased along the lines of one political party or whatever other interests they want to promote.
The majority of these media outlets employ "journalists" whose primary role appears to be to repeat press releases verbatim, with no challenge to the veracity of the information, no background confirmation of the who, what, when, where and why. Imagine undertaking your studies to become a journalist and end up just doing that day in / day out.

The issue with social media is that some sad sack can register hundreds of accounts to make it appear like lots of people share a view or make something untrue appear to be fact.

Journalists aren't journalists anymore. Copying and pasting press releases isn't journalism. Even locally there are various things the Press could have investigated but haven't. More likely to report about a man in Cairneyhill who scuffed his alloy on a pothole.

It might not be journalism but it pays well. At the top end, courtiers like the late Sir Alastair Burnett and Alastair Stewart are richly rewarded for serving the ruling class and even when they start fluffing their lines on the autocue the cosy world of charity commissions and celebrity TV helps eke out their pension. This privilege can be passed on: Stewart (a former pupil of Madras College) has a son working for some US based sports streaming company as an analyst.

A Scottish heritage seems to be an advantage in this line of work. To Moira Stewart, Trevor McDonald and Andrew Marr can be added Mr. GB News himself, Andrew Neil. Here are two examples of Neil’s journalism. On the invasion of Afghanistan he described a "calibrated response" and a "patient, precise and successful deployment of US military power". That patience ran out last week. On the invasion of Iraq, Neil described the case for war and regime change as "convincing" and "masterful," even although a war to effect regime change is in breach of international law.

Such a cheerleader for Pax Americana will have little trouble receiving funding from US corporations, nor is he likely to stand in the court at The Hague for the crime of inciting wars of aggression.

Sammer, would you care to offer a similarly unbiased assessment of the Russian media?

I simply have nothing more to say, I wish you good luck, some if the numbers you're not seeing on your television aren't swaying me.
Seeing lots of vaccinated people getting covid, not seeing any in my unvaccinated friends and family.
Anyhoo, bon voyage.

Ozpar,

I assume your use of the word ‘unbiased’ is ironic so I would be interested to know which part of my comments in relation to Andrew Neil and others is tainted by prejudice. They are all well paid mouthpieces for the status quo, as is the case in Russia and every other country, for if the pen (or the word) is mightier than the sword it cannot be allowed to fall into the wrong hands. If it did then the status quo would be endangered.

I might have a smidgen of respect for these self-styled journalists and broadcasters if they were open in their agenda- to offer critical support to the status quo- but they pretend to be open minded people of a liberal disposition seeking nothing other than the truth. It’s that hypocrisy as much as their dutiful toeing of the official line that offends me.

There are journalists out there doing their proper job: speaking truth to power, identifying what is right from what is wrong. You will rarely find them in a TV studio or writing for a national newspaper since they will have long since have been ‘no platformed.’ A few have managed to grab a microphone but their voice is often stilled. Anna Politovskya (shot in a Moscow elevator); Veronica Guerin (shot at traffic lights in Dublin); David Kelly (strange suicide Oxfordshire); Daphne Galizia (car bomb Malta); Edward Snowden (political asylum Moscow); Julian Assange (awaiting extradition Belmarsh Prison). We could probably add Craig Murray to that list soon. If the present UK government passes its legislation relating to state security there will doubtless be a few more to join him.

I think things are slowly changing. People are interested more in what's online rather than picking up a paper or watching the news.

The big problem are people like this "disinformation dozen" who will flood the web with utter drivel. So even online the information is still being controlled. Dissenting voices are drowned our or made fools of by idiots controlled by powerful people.

There needs to be trusted voices and one of those trusted voices needs to be the Government (LOL).
