 Major announcement imminent...
Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Wed 15 Sep 14:22

US President Biden is expected to make a major announcement in 8 hours time, which apparently has international implications. The White House said Biden would deliver “brief remarks about a national security initiative”.

Foreign diplomats are being briefed on the development.

Here in Australia, several federal cabinet ministers were called to a top-secret meeting in Canberra ahead of a major international development expected out of the United States.

So what`s it all about? The growing tensions in Korea? China/Taiwan? An attack on Iran? Have they finally nailed Donald Trump?

We will know in a few hours...

Yes SIF, I think you nailed it. The way it was being reported there was a sense that it had broader international implications.

Australia has to handle its relations with China very carefully. I hope to goodness the Americans don`t want to put a nuclear weapons base here in Oz. There might be a wee bit of blowback on that idea...

Joking apart, nailing Trump is the top security issue of the decade. Very dangerous lunatic.

Not a bad idea.
Trump would have plenty on here convinced we won the league despite being relegated.

How disappointing, another working group which will twiddle its thumbs.

Here was me thinking it might the USA ending its ridiculous travel ban to counties with lower covid cases and much higher vaccination rates.

Infact should we even enter into deals like this with the US while they don’t seem us worthy of entering their country?

The post below replying to me is by one of .nets finest champions of mediocrity!

We build parts of our systems in China and complete the build in Singapore, however, we cannot change the location of build and are subjected to Trumps China import duty. Sales dropped to competitors built only in otherlow cost nations. It is also interesting that Biden didn’t revoke this tax law, which also impacts the majority of electronic goods going into the US meaning that Americans pay more than any other nation for most of their electronic goods 🧐.

China will absolutely not back down in their regional land grab and continuous “growing” of islands. There could be trouble ahead.

But why are we getting involved? If this is such a concern then surely it's one for NATO rather than some sort of British Empire tribute act?

I hear you jake89.

As I read it, NATO technically is North Atlantic/Europe. Is it not?

The Asia Pacific region traditionally has come under a group of military alliances involving the US and Australia/NZ, Japan, Philippines and South Korea and some less formal defence pacts with Taiwan, Thailand, and Singapore.

As for Britain? I honestly don`t know why it is involved these days, beyond long-term commitments to Australia and New Zealand. Outside of that, Britain`s commitment to Hong Kong ended in 1997.

As you say, a British Empire tribute act...?

But from where I live, with China, Russia and North Korea all within shooting distance to our north, I reckon we probably need all the help we can get these days...

Russia is only 700 miles closer to Australia than China is to the UK.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

That is true, TOWK. In so many ways, not just the often mentioned Big Brother, we seem to be moving towards Orwell`s vision of 1984. The three superstates... Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia.

This deal helps underpin Oceania. Brexit already secures Eurasia...

More than 70 years ago, George Orwell seems to have written the script for the next 100 years...

Tbh, I`m actually glad to see a harder stance against China - it`s been needed for a long time.

The CCP are the first to scream racism when challenged, but racism is rampant there - positive if you`re white, negative if you`re black, Indian etc. Asian culture is all about "keeping face" and its particularly poignant in Mainland China where the CCP have to be seen to be in complete control. Put on top of this that you have an incredibly gullible populace who will believe anything fed to them through the news and its a common thing for the CCP to stir up Nationalism through this means - the number of other countries they`ve tried to blame for Covid is ridiculous and their populace generally believe this because they read their news through WeChat. I`d recommend having a wee read about the "50 cent army", which is essentially a bunch of individuals paid by the CCP to use VPNs to get around the "Golden Shield"/and report/dislike/downvote anything from other countries that is critical of the CCP in any way. There`s a lot of sneaky funding going on in US Universities as well that needs to be further examined.

The key thing to remember about China is that is all about how things appear rather than how things actually are. These cities that have been built up are largely of poor build quality and apartment blocks begin falling apart after about 5 years or so. There`s also a few provinces in Central-Eastern China that suffer horrendous flooding regularly and the CCP always reports minimal death figures. Strange when you consider that in Chinese culture, a great flood usually signalled the end of a dynasty. But, generally speaking, Mainland Chinese are incredibly superstitious and a lot of that is driving things like the rhino horn and pangolin scale trade.

Going forward though, generally speaking though the CCP are terrified of losing power as its essentially a mafia racket. China`s economy is entering a period of decline that can only be countered by market liberalisation, which will never be allowed due to said paranoia. India is about to overtake China population-wise and already has a strong highly-skilled sector in the economy but needs help in developing the unskilled sector and solving formalisation problems. If the EU, US, Japan etc were to turn their attention to helping India develop then this could be the most powerful counter to China, especially so when you consider the regionality element.

As a side note, if anyone is interested in understanding China a bit more, then I`d recommend watching the YouTubers Laowhy86 (who also lived in Taiwan) and Serpentza - both of these guys lived in China for years, speak Chinese and give a really good low-down on what goes on over there. Many of the others that give positive views of the Chinese Government don`t actually speak Chinese.
