 WD Red HDD Issues
Topic Originator: Lesley

I know there are a lot of computer type people use .net so maybe, just maybe one of you will be able to help me.

I have a Synology NAS DS414 with 2 hard drives - both Western Digital Red 4TB. One running for storage, the other as a backup.

The NAS has stopped working, so I`ve removed the hard disks and have put one into a SATA hard drive docking station.

I`m running Windows 11 and when I look in Device Manager there is Disk 0 (which I assume is the laptop itself) and there is a Disk 1. It shows as being "healthy". I`m assuming Disk 1 is the WD Red Drive.

When I try to access the drive there is activity with the drive in the docking station but I can`t get it to show up in Windows Explorer to view the contents of the disk.

Does anyone have any idea if its an issue with the format of the hard drive itself or if there is something I need to do to convert the disk to be able to view in Windows.

In fact any suggestion on how to rectify the problem would be very much appreciated.

Lesley

Does your disk 1 have a drive letter assigned. Disk 0 will probably be c: drive.

If disk 1 has no assigned letter you will see it in device manager but not file explorer.

Go to disk management, check if both drives have an assigned letter. If one hasn`t, right click on that one and you should be able to assign a letter and path.

Then check file explorer again.

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately all of the options are greyed out for Disk 1 apart from Help.

Its showing as:
Disk 1
Basic
Online
Healthy (GPT Protective Partition)

When you day it`s stopped working are there lights showing on the NAS itself? If not then I don`t think it will be anything to do with the harddrives.

Disk station manager, out wherever it`s called, should be able tell what`s wrong with either of the drivers and if that`s not working then that would suggest the problem is with the unit itself.

I have a similar model and never had any problems with it, so can`t say I`ve had to do any problem solving with it.

One final thing, assuming it`s a no lights on situation (as with anything electrical), have you checked the fuse, plug etc?

The power cable was my first thought and so bought a new one and it still doesn`t work.

What happens is that the adaptor lights up but as soon as you press the ON button on the diskstation the light goes off again. Something inside is forcing the power off again and stopping the NAS from booting up.

I have no idea how to fix this so my thought was to remove the drive and connect it directly to my laptop to see if I can read the contents of the disk.

I just want to be able to move the files onto another hard disk. I have almost 30 years worth of photographs on the drive that I really don`t want to lose :(

If you have the external hard drive connected to the PC and go into disk management.

Once there remove the USB hard drive. Does a hard drive disappear from the list?

It may be that your NAS has formatted the disk in a format Windows can`t read. When I try to access a Linux partition through Windows, the same options are greyed out. It`s a good sign that disk management can see the hard drive.

I would suggest putting Linux on a USB and booting that (you don`t need to install it, there`s an option to run off the USB), and then try to access the files. I suspect you will have more success.

Moviescot - yes the hard disk disappears

David - I`m currently running a disk partition wizard programme and a data recovery. Its only at 4% and has found 380,000 files so far. I can see this taking quite some time.

Depending on the results of this, I will try your Linux suggestion.

Thank you both again.

Hi. There is a chance then that your PC has a driver issue.

You can check this by going to device manager. This lists everything on your PC. With the drive plugged in, hit the drop down list for disk drives. If there is a driver issue there will be a yellow mark beside it
You will then have to see if you can get the up to date driver online.

Hi
I checked the driver the other day and the latest one is installed apparently.

In Disk Manager, my laptop is showing as GPT format, and the WD drive is showing as MBR.

I see that there are programs I can use to convert the HDD to GPT, but I`m looking to see which I could use that definitely won`t delete any data.

I don`t think changing the format would be a good idea.

You could obviously send it to a data recovery specialist but I`ve no idea of the cost.

What I`d do (assuming you have enough disk space elsewhere) is take an image of the disk, that way if you mess it up you can restore it and try something else.

There are data recovery tools that search the raw disk data looking for file patterns and can recover files that way. Usually good for images and videos. They tend not to be able to recover the filename this way.

It could be the partition table is corrupt - the data that holds the filenames and locations.

A few tools
- macrium reflect - disk cloning
- testdisk - partition recovery
- photorec - file recovery

Also worth trying to find out what the original disk format was: NTFS, FAT32, ext4, etc.

Good luck!

Lesley, you can’t put a value on 30 years worth of photos.
I’d be inclined to take to a reputable repairer ?

Yes professional is best.

But...

If you can get access to an old laptop on same file system as hard drive you could copy drive to that before trying any recovery. At least you would retain a copy on laptop if it all goes wrong.

Can I just reiterate the Linux option. If the hard-drive has been formatted by the NAS, it`s quite likely to have created partitions in a format Windows doesn`t like.

I just searched for the manual for the NAS device you use and under file system it lists `EXT4` as the default. Windows uses NTFS. I have my Linux partition formatted using EXT4 and when I log in with Windows, I have the exact same issue.

If you have a USB flashdrive, or even a blank DVD, you can create a bootable linux disk/usb. Once that`s done, it`s literally just a case of letting your PC boot from the disk, then clicking on `file manager` and I`m pretty sure you will see the files.

To create a bootable USB/DVD is pretty simple. There are instructions here: https://unetbootin.github.io but I`m also willing to go into more detail.

I would definitely try this first - and it in no way risks the data. If you pay a file recovery specialist, they will likely charge quite a lot, yet will likely only need to plug in a USB.

Alternatively, there is some guidance here on how to potentially access EXT4 formatted partitions from WIndows here: https://www.howtogeek.com/112888/3-ways-to-access-your-linux-partitions-from-windows Although, I can`t vouch for the methods suggested there.

Agree with David - if it`s ext4, try the Linux option before you do anything else.

Again, thank you everyone for your help.

David, I do intend to try your suggestion first, I just needed to look into how to do it as I have absolutely no idea, but I will try that today.

The way the NAS was setup I have two disks. One should be a full copy of the other. If something goes wrong at least I still have one.

I`m scunnered with this thing now.

When I ran a Partition Wizard program on it using the Data Recovery option it showed me all 1.4TB of data, broken down into how much was images, audio, documents etc, so I know its there.

I tried doing a Linux boot up, but there were so many options to choose from I wasn`t sure if I was selecting the right one.

I tried ARCHLINUX but it wouldn`t boot. It showed a "Not a COM32R image" error message.

UBUNTU loaded and it showed the HDD in the DISKS app. It showed the model, the disk size but showed the amount of free space as the full 4TB which confused me, and the Contents as Unallocated Space. The partitioning was Unknown (PMBR).

The HDD didn`t show in the FILES app.

LUBUNTU showed the HDD in the COMPUTER app but showed a "can`t mount file" error.

I then installed DISKINTERNALS LINUX READER. This showed the HDD as a Raid disk. It also showed the message "Raid is damaged. Recovery is possible.

I was at the point of paying for the DiskInternals licence to just get the data off the disk but at $249 I thought it best to search around.

So, does anyone have any idea of what I should try next, or can you recommend a data recovery programme I can trust?

I have found a couple of sites that list what they consider the best and the prices start from about $30 for a month long licence.
