 Census - online returns
Topic Originator: veteraneastender
Date:   Wed 2 Mar 20:46

Has anybody else had a problem accessing the form online ?

After I entered the unique household ID code it asked for a password - but I haven`t got one, nor will it allow me to register one.

Maybe I`m missing something obvious ?

Strange VEE, I`ve just logged on for first time using code and it`s asked me to create a password. Any chance anyone in house has already logged on?

For someone who doesn’t think it’s important, you seem very concerned why it’s being completed in 2022 as opposed to 2021?
Ate you concerned that we’re capturing a demographic snapshot of the country after 10.75 years as opposed to 10?

Not sure what real difference it makes when it`s done. You`re essentially comparing one period with another. General population trends are monitored far more regularly than the census anyway.

The only benefit would be if you thought you could hide some failings, but those failings won`t disappear in a few months and are probably already recorded anyway (things like increased levels of child poverty).

Exactly. The story of data harvesting is interesting and can become quite tricky. Walmart used to run targeted marketing until they were caught out.
A family was receiving very specific marketing of baby products to which the father of the family took Walmart to task as his wife wasn’t pregnant. The details I cannot remember of how it came to light in the public arena; litigation probably. Anyway it came to light that his young daughter was pregnant and Walmart were off the hook. The data science was correct and opened up the whole public debate on privacy. But let’s not fool ourselves that every transaction and behaviour is not being monitored. For example. The majority of people will try to turn right when entering a supermarket. So why not place all your high margin products there for those unwitting customers to buy, and we do! Human behaviourists love the data science and it will not go away unless the majority of people change their behaviour, and that will never happen. COVID taught us all that and more.

Regarding the lingo questions I don’t think Gaelic would be much use to me, or the other 99% in Scotland. All road and rail signs are also in English though, most helpful for locals and tourists from here and abroad trying to find their way from Inverness to Auchtershuggle.
I grew up in a colony of Wartime expats from Geordieland, also Janners,Sand dancers, and whatever the shipwrights etc of Portsmouth and Chatham called themselves.
So Scots passed me by. Is there a dictionary.?

For native English speakers, Very few languages are worth learning in reality… so you may as well learn a language that improves your own understanding of your own language, or your history (eg where our place names come from) and Gaelic certainly does that - as well as keeping your brain active etc so it works actually be good for you in that respect

It`s asked because it`s helpful in planning.

For example, if it`s found there are only 50 people in Fife who speak only German, then little resource will go into translating leaflets and things into German. If it`s 50,000 then they would.

In terms of any questions around sexuality, this will also help in terms of businesses planning.

It was sexist, the head of household was respondent and obliged to complete the information - except where a widow was the family head.

I’ve no idea what a show man (2 words) means, or show woman either !!!

These census returns were submitted in longhand, then transcribed the same way - there are numerous examples of misspellings etc.

All is revealed !!!

In this PC era that should be showperson presumably ?

I wondered if it was one of these new categories of ethic groupings that have appeared on census questions.

Incidentally, In the USA, “the show” has no connection to circus people.

Could be. I`d simply say they`re flats but it may be a detached house that`s been converted into studios.

Showman/woman is what they go by. It`s a relatively recent addition.

If you complete the Census online - which is the subject of the thread after all - there`s a video available explaining what the Scots language is with loads of examples to help people to answer the questions about it.

Maybe we should all just speak American English and forget about our roots.

Aren`t Geordie and Scouse accents rather than languages? And Klingon is fictitious of course, like the languages kids make up to communicate in secret.

Some folk like to deny the existence of different languages within the UK because it doesn`t fit with their idea that we`re all one nation rather than a union of nations.

When was the last time you said, or more importantly wrote/typed, the words "dinny haud yet weesht" or anything like it.

A total waste of time and money. Similar to the Gaelic decal on the ambulances/police cars.

Make up your mind! Is Scots a language or is it just a waste of money to ask questions about it in a census? I can`t believe anyone would get so worked up about this. The marginal cost of including these questions in a census return which already exists must be minimal. You could question the use any of the data gleaned from any census but they`ve been done for years and the information is obviously useful for planning purposes.

Scots is definitely a language and the reason it asks about this is so they can make a call on things many consider a waste of time like Gaelic road signs. So they do need to ask otherwise there`s no evidence of need, only assumed need.

Dunfermline translates as hill (Dun) by the Lyne (Line) Burn (Ferm).

Duloch, which is always mispronounced DULL-OCH, is named after the Dubh (Doo) Loch.

The names mean little about modern day Dunfermline. Go back a bit further and the people spoke Pictish, which is thought to be more like Welsh.

The Gaelic stats were taken from the most recent census - where people can indicate just about anything in their return, with no verification.

Very scientific.

BTW - no issues with people learning Gaelic, or any other language for that matter.

A few years ago DAFC facilitated an `Introduction to Gaelic` evening as part of the Outwith arts festival. The idea was to use football as the catalyst and the event was presented by BBC Alba sports commentator Hugh Dan McLennan. He used footage from games on that channel to give a brief insight into the language. It was good fun and some of our younger players at the time came along and joined in.

The key aspect is what level of competency constitutes speaking Gaelic ?

I did some French at school - first visit there I could hardly understand a word.

Native tongue is one thing - night school classes is a different scenario.

Saying there are 4000 fluent Gaelic speakers in Fife is a dubious claim - just an opinion.

As someone said if there are 40000 people who are learning in fife and they signal that on the census - so what?

There may be some of the money put aside for Gaelic assigned to those learners and we see more language opportunities for them - cool!

I don’t actually think there are any night classes anyway in fife which I think is pretty poor

There are Gaelic schools though. So if you see a demand for learning Gaelic in Fife then perhaps funding would be released to support one?

And before anyone says anything, the existing Gaelic schools are pretty successful and the research suggests learning Gaelic is helpful in terms of learning further languages.

And our own Jake… we may have stopped speaking it but its influence is in all our place names, a lot of our words and names and even the way we speak English

Also learning any additional language improves your understanding of your own and makes it easy to pick up a third

Agree, would have been nice to take in some of the episodes of `Padraig Post` and to understand wtf was going on in Dotaman.

Definitely. The issue seems to be people politicising it. I used to work beside a guy who sent his daughter to the Gaelic school in Edinburgh. He was English and smart enough to put aside all the nationalist/unionist nonsense and see it was beneficial to his daughters education.

My friends father from Durness, who is a fluent gaelic speaker. Didn`t speak english till he went to the `big school` in Kinlochbervie was recently invited to Edinburgh university to record him speaking in his durnesian dialect of gaelic. Apparently lots of `bad words` were recorded for posterity.Bizarrely not speaking English till he was 11 didn`t affect his career as a journalist.

Are these not a form of selective education schools favoured by the middle classes - as near to a so called public school as you`ll find in the state funded system ?

Well my view is private school is a complete and utter waste of money unless it`s a school that excels in a particular field (sport, music, language etc).

Tbh, if Fife had a Gaelic school and you wanted to send them to a "better" school then just buy a 2 bed semi in Duloch and send your kids to the second most affluent primary in the region! Of course that then disregards the proven educational benefits of learning a second language.

The reality is that most private schools do excel in these areas.

So do the state schools in affluent localities.

You don’t need to go to a top rated secondary to learn a second language.

Although from recent stats, the uptake in the more popular ones is falling off.
