 City status for the toon!
Topic Originator: buffy

Eight new cities are being created for the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee, with at least one in every UK nation - and on the Falkland Islands and Isle of Man.

From BBC News:

“Milton Keynes in England, Dunfermline in Scotland, Bangor in Northern Ireland and Wrexham in Wales all get the title.”

“It is a first for places in an Overseas Territory - Stanley, in the Falklands - and a crown dependency - Douglas, in the Isle of Man - to win city status.”

“Colchester and Doncaster complete the list getting the royal honour.”

“Applicants had to show their cultural heritage and royal links.”

Although people think it`s just a word, it does boost the "toons" economy. The "seven cities" (now eight) get extra attention and access to funding.

Felt great about this until I saw Colchester got it too....they are dishing them out to anyone!

Seriously, I think this is long overdue given the historic importance of the city.

Once the proud capital of Scotland, and resting place of warrior king Robert the Bruce and other monarchs.
Birthplace of Andrew Carnegie whose legacy includes the public library, on of many he endowed at home and abroad.
Charles1 also born here. Poor chap had his head chopped off, but that was Westminster’s fault, it always is….

Fantastic achievement for the Toon, hopefully loads of new investment opportunities come our way.

Having been to Port Stanley I can say that calling that place a City is an absolute joke.
Lucky if there is more than a dozen streets in the place.
When I was last there it only had 3 pubs and one of those was basically someone`s living room.
Good to see that 2 Scottish Cities are getting it though. Ourselves and Doncaster.

Shame it`s in the same announcement of Milton Keynes. The most soulless depressing place I have ever visited. Still scarred after 30 years.

It`s "toun" not "toon".

Not that it matters cos we is a city!

Unintended consequences:

- The Patrick Spens poem is now wrong
- The people of Cowdenbeath can`t call us "Toonies"
- You can`t go "up" or "doon" the toun
- The railway station name makes no sense
- Langtonians are poring over the latest census data trying to evidence their greater population (you can`t include Kinghorn, ya dafties!)

On a more serious note, I think Dunfermline still misses a trick in terms of bringing people in. There`s a big hill at the new learning campus that would be perfect for some form of land art to draw people in. I really liked Richard Jobson`s "Land, Sea and Sky" piece.

Helen Law has also raised really valid points about Dunfermline not being on the road signs. It`s a minor detail but it`s one that`s ways confused me.

But we`ve already got that lovely art work outside the bus station Jake.
Ye ken... The one that looks like a fire escape from the side of a building 🤣

I think that is likely to be addressed now. Hopefully.

Hope so. TBH most tourists seem to follow the same route - Edinburgh>Stirling>Inverness>Glasgow but Dunfermline should be dragging in way more from Edinburgh. The council genuinely needs to sort out the high street paving though. Can`t do much about the current retail situation but that paving is a shocker. We must have the worst high street paving in Fife. That`s surely not befitting of Fife`s only city 😉

We need to do much more to push the Royal links and The battle of Inverkeithing too. The display at the museum falls well short of a creditable display for tourists. Lifesized waxworks at the palace ruins andabbey would be cool.

Is there not a `rule` about signs where the end of the road is what goes on the sign? Its why, if you drive back from Crieff, all signs have Dunfermline on it (and t`other way round as well)

PARot, I walked past the palace on Thursday. The information boards are there but the gate was padlocked. Has it been like that a while?
