I have just seen an advert on the front page of dotnet for an event next month here in Melbourne. Barack Obama is appearing at the John Cain Arena, one of the stadiums used in the Australian Open Tennis.
I thought I might go along to that until I checked the ticket prices through Ticketek. Would you believe that they range from $195 to $895...?
Geez, that`s a fortune to hear a bloke speak for an hour or so. John Cain Arena holds 10,500 for concerts, so assuming he filled it with people paying the lowest rate, he would be grossing $2 million for the night.
Sure, there will be major deductions from that, but just imagine going around the world endlessly clocking up these sorts of paydays!

Imagine if we gave that sort of money to scientists instead?

Johnson`s earnings since losing office as the PM are now around £5m apparently - but he still needs help with his accommodation costs.

How much of that disappears to ticketmaster, arena hire, security, tax etc.
He probably doesnt end up with a huge amount, but merchandise and booksales will escalate.

Maybe Barry is struggling to pay the heating bill in his 12 million beachside home in The Hamptons.

To be fair there`s a pretty direct comparison. Maybe not in terms of ability but in the fact they are two former heads of state charging large amounts of on the speaker circuit.

Obama’s not exactly a stand-up comedian, but maybe he’s been working on some new material or learned some magic tricks to justify those ticket prices.

You would have thought a Democrat like Obama would have wanted the tickets to be accessible to the less well-heeled members of society.
