I was telted to get pudding rice when I was on the Tesco run at the weekend - I had no real idea what that was and assumed it would be easy enough to find - you know what they say about assumptions !!!
No such product (so labelled) on the shelves of rice products.
I eventually discovered that that was another name for short grain rice - problem solved - a further erroneous assumption !!!
None to be found in Tesco - nor Morrisons - nor Asda........stacks of the long grain variety though !!!
Conclusion - somebody is trying to corner the market by hoarding, or there is a genuine widespread shortage ?
Answers on a postcard please.

There ye go vee .. there is a shortage :-
Rice feeds more than half the world – but we are about to enter a major shortage of this staple, putting food security and livelihoods at risk as prices rise.
Yields are falling and crops failing as a result of floods, droughts and severe weather caused by the climate crisis.
Rice is also a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, so more sustainable production and cultivation methods are a priority.
But it can’t just be grown anywhere – it is a hugely water-intensive crop, grown on flooded fields. It takes 3,000 to 5,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of rice.
This makes it particularly prone to increasing and more severe droughts that are occurring because of the climate crisis. Rising temperatures, floods, as well as severe, unpredictable weather as a result of climate change, are also causing harvests to fail.

Is this an attempt by the Chinese to influence our way of life? Personally. I`m not going to get into a paddy about it.

I think the Japanese use short-grain rice for sushi. In fact, I am pretty sure the supermarkets call it Japonica Rice down here in Oz.

Tesco Duloch has "pudding rice". It`s beside the custard, cones, bakery type stuff.
