Has anyone else seen the footage on the BBC website of the rugby `own goal`? Youth teams from Hawick and Gala were involved in a tight game and with the score at 31-33 Gala had the chance to tie the scores by converting a try with the last kick of the match. It was clear the attempt was going to fall short but, before it hit the ground, a Hawick player came off their line and kicked the ball. It deflected off his foot and went over the bar. The referee, who had officiated at international matches in the past, correctly ruled that it counted as a conversion and the game ended as a 33-33 draw!

Seen this the other day and even in my years of playing/watching Ive never known that was the law until then - but it makes sense, as the ball from a conversion is technically still live until it hits the deck…same as a footballing penalty shootout where the balls still live if in play and moving, even if it hits the woodwork

I’m sure the kick could be retaken if that weird scenario of the lad kicking the ball elsewhere happened for all the same reasons.

Not sure what the rules are for a conversion attempt. If the boy had caught the ball instead, could he have run it back for a try? I`m guessing no, but if the ball is only dead when it hits the ground, then what?

The conversion attempt is essentially a dead point of play.
If they miss, they don’t get the points and the game restarts with the exact same kickoff from the centre by the other team that would occur if the kick had been successful.
There is no option to catch the missed kick and play from there.
Otherwise I guess, a legit tactic would be to chip the ball to a team-mate to run in for another try

Another way of thinking about it is a penalty in a shoot out, where the ball hits the woodwork, hits the keepers back and goes in - it still counts as a goal 👍🏻

Is there any rule about where the opposing players have to be during the conversion attempt?
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

As soon as a kicker begins their run up, you can “charge” a kick - thats conversions and penalties.
Some kickers have been caught out before by taking a slight step backwards before they begin motion, and kicks been charged down and officials have allowed it due to them starting motion.

Didn`t think you could charge penalty attempts.

If the conversion attempt had hit the ground before the opposition player kicked it would the ball have been deemed to be `dead` before he touched it?
