I must confess I`d never heard of this until last weekend when my daughter and her husband queued online for Oasis tickets. They abandoned it when cheapest tickets rose to £350.
And what about those tickets which were being re-sold at nearly £6000? Should there be a law to stop people being exploited like this or should those who can afford to pay such crazy money be allowed to do so?

I can see both sides of the argument. But I much prefer a fixed price. I thought they made it illegal for the ticket sellers to ramp pricing? So perhaps they are now arguing that if the band is benefiting from the dynamic pricing it`s OK
They do it with travel and hotels too....but perhaps not to this extent.
More than happy to miss out at those prices. Always annoys me when people build a massive fan base and make a career out of it, but then exploit the same people after.

A phone-in on the subject has just ended on Radio Scotland. There are some horror stories. One woman wanted tickets for Edinburgh but couldn`t get them so switched to Dublin where she got tickets at face price but then was quoted £800 a night for a hotel room!
Does all the extra profit go to the band or is it shared amongst the various interested parties?

It`s supply and demand but also clear greed. I seriously disagree with having shows in enormous venues and charging through the nose for it. Each to their own, but I`ve no desire to pay hundreds of pounds to be miles to from the band and swamped by thousands of others.

I listened to Simon Calder on Radio Scotland - he explained that the airline industry were originally behind dynamic pricing.

From the 1:28:40 mark.
Ryanair use a benchmark called Seat Factor Active,Yield Passive - first time I`ve heard this term.

Think it`s the range of pricing that`s the difference here.
I understand why folk want to fill their planes up enough to be profitable and then increase pricing to see if they can make more.
I think this is different as they are bound to be making a mint with the ramping.

I have tickets through the pre-sale due to my business being in the industry.
What are we getting here? At this point in proceedings and taking the most cynical viewpoint it seems to be Liam joining the High Flying Birds and them doing Oasis covers. We might get an appearance by Bonehead, but given Gem is on the HFB roster will he be lost in the mix?
As a veteran of Maine Road, Knebworth and Wembley as well as sharing a support slot with them before they were signed if it were not easy access to tickets that will ultimately be a tax-right off I doubt I`d be putting in any of the effort mentioned above or indeed parting with the cash due to being a rip-off.
if it were a simple case of pleasure rather than business I`m sure I`d be letting younger folk in my business go rather than myself as they seem transfixed by this second coming although for the majority of them they know very little to the point I had blank expressions when I said they got rid of their Ringo for a series of Jimmie Nichols when highlighting the merits of Tony McCarroll.
I`m hoping by the time the concerts roll round next year my misanthropy will have dissipated somewhat and I`ll enjoy attending the fundraisers for Noel`s Superyacht.

Agree. No better than loads of indie bands at the time but they seemed to win the popular vote by being seen as representing the working class. Song wise Pulp, Blur, Radiohead, James, OCS, Stereophonics and many others have far stronger back catalogues.

Those bands fans will never be the victims of "dynamic pricing" because millions of people will never try to get tickets for their gigs, their songs are just not popular enough even though they do have some cracking songs.

Wasn`t suggesting they would be. I was agreeing with the comment that Oasis are incredibly overrated.
I believe the likes of Ed Sheeran, who has sold twice as many records as Oasis ever have, doesn`t use dynamic pricing. It`s a massive error of judgement for the band that`s supposed to represent the common man.

I remember seeing motorhead for the grand sum of £5.60.
Also seen slayer for £8.00 supported by nuclear assault.
Metallica for £10.50 supported by anthrax.
What a gig that was.
First ever gig was Saxon for £4.80.
All at the playhouse Edinburgh.
Last time I seen Metallica it cost me £120 and that was a cheap ticket.

Streaming is only free if you accept adverts and limitations. I used YouTube music and I`m sure it`s £12.99pm which is basically a CD per month.
I`d imagine the costs for streaming are far lower than the cost of making up CDs/vinyls and tapes and distributing them to shops.

Oasis are trying to dissociate themselves from the controversy-
In a statement issued to PA Media, the band said: "It needs to be made clear that Oasis leave decisions on ticketing and pricing entirely to their promoters and management."
They added they had "at no time had any awareness that dynamic pricing was going to be used" in the sale of tickets for the initial dates.
The band`s statement came as they announced two further live shows at Wembley Stadium on 27 and 28 September 2025.
Oasis said tickets for the new dates would be handed out via a "staggered, invitation-only ballot process".
Applications for the ballot for new dates will only be open to those who were unsuccessful in the initial Ticketmaster sale, they added.

I would have thought that it was the band`s duty to be aware of what was going on since it reflects badly on them, rather than washing their hands off it with that bland statement.
I asked in the OP whether folk thought laws should be drafted to stop or at least limit the exploitation of music fans or whether that would be a step closer to the Nanny State, or whether those daft enough to shell out such obscene sums should just be allowed to get on with it.
Well, what do you think?

Ticketmaster in some cases are controlling the supply/demand of the tickets by giving customers a limited timescale to purchase.
This needs addressing.
At one venue I was offered "Platinum VIP Seats" for Bruce Springsteen with 2 minutes to accept/reject. I accepted at £650 per ticket.
Later, I researched what I had purchased expecting some form of hospitality tickets and was shocked to discover that "Platinum VIP" was their terminology for in-demand ticketing. I had only purchased two tickets with no added benefit and under their rules could not request a refund.
Luckily, I found a loophole and requested a refund from my Amex under the "cooling off" rules and was successfully refunded.
Then I purchased two hospitality tickets with food, drink and early/late access to the same event for £200 each cheaper.
Trust me, Ticketmaster need to be brought to task.

No doubt your money went a lot further in 1968, Ipswich - if memory serves, a Mars bar cost a tanner (sixpence) and 25p was 5/- (shillings) in old money. That would have bought you 10 Mars bars. How much would that set you back today?

Average salary 1968 was £25 - therefore walk up admission in Scottish top league was 1/100 of that.
Fast forward that to 2024 and you’d need to earn £2400 for a visit to EEP to maintain comparison.

Yeah and a single Mars bar now is about the same as half a duo 😂
Prices and sizes have been a farce these last 2/3 years - cat food, for example, is glaringly obvious - price has increased 200% for both wet and dry boxes yet packets have decreased in size by 20%. How this isn’t regulated is beyond a joke.

Another angle for the farce with Ticketmaster is the ease that bots seem to get tickets faster than humans and re-sell them on ViaGoGo for astronomical prices.
My wife has just purchased two tickets for Wet Wet Wet at the Alhambra in Dunfermline from someone in the Czech Republic and paid for in Czech currency.
It may just be a coincidence 🤔

Edinburgh Corn Exchange was a brilliant venue back in the day as well! Close to the stage, loud, close to the band. So much better than seeing these bands in arenas or stadiums.
Seen Foo Fighters there (£20 if anyone is wondering) They had “and you will know us by the trail of dead” supporting them.
