I notice that the sports journalist of the Courier has picked up on GG Riva`s description of Andrew Tod as "Grandson of God". While absolutely buzzing about Andy`s hat trick and our 5 nil victory it got me thinking of the theological implications of the title.

The Biblical view of the question could be taken from John`s Gospel chapter one which tells us that "Jesus (son of God) came to the world, which was made through Him, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.

So we all may become children of God. It`s called being born again, as in John 3 verse 3.

Funnily enough I used the term "Grandson of God" on social media this morning to describe the young master, and then got a couple of messages asking the reason why, from a couple of journo acquaintances. Who writes for The Courier?

It never occurred to me to copyright the term, so I guess anyone can use it without sending me royalties, Paralex. 😀

The term "children of God" for all humanity is a comforting one, but there`s precious little evidence of it at this time, with wars and famines, inequality and scarce regard for the world`s poorest or our planet`s future.

The problem is GG that being sons and daughters of God is not an innate human right. But by repentance and faith in the completed work of redemption by Jesus on the cross, we are adopted as children of God. When this happens He gives us His Spirit " which is a guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it". Until then, as Jesus says in Matthew chapter 24, there will be wars and rumours of wars. Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes. These are the beginnings of birth pains."

Birth pains for what? Romans chapter 8, v 20 "the creation waits in eager longing for the sons (and daughters) of God to be revealed......the creation itself will be liberated from it`s bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

Romans 8 v 16. "The Spirit (that God gives us when we accept Christ) testifies with our spirit, that we are God`s children. Then if we are children, then we are heirs---co- heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory".

While I`ll not be joining the list of aquirers Paralex and I`m certainly well beyond "young" under any definition, I certainly hope the world and those of us who are currently looking after it can do a better job of keeping an eye on the planet and each other.

If religion is a way that gives youngsters a framework to get to that point then that works for me.

Oh, I should have said Grandson of God, in the Christian faith, is not an option, we can only become sons and daughters of God, and to be accurate, that doesn`t come by scoring a hat trick for Dunfermline. But I do see that Andrew is in the starting line-up tonight so another great showing from the young man and a win will send me home rather happy.

Yes, the Ayr game was a particularly bitter pill to swallow.
