 Pronoun rage
Topic Originator: jake89

Local artist Jacob Alon won the best newcomer award from BBC Introducing. I`m not surprised as their album is absolutely stunning. Normally you`d expect locals to be proud of someone who was brought up in Dunfermline doing so well. However, instead of praise a load of the comments are people objecting to their use of they/them pronouns or commenting on them wearing a ladies top. In fairness, it`s not that nice a top but I don`t think that`s why the detractors are complaining.

I`ll be honest that I often struggle with pronouns if someone isn`t going by what they appear to be. However, I don`t get angry about it. It doesn`t really affect me other than probably embarrassing myself. Why do some people seem to get so angry about it? Based on Facebook, most also appear to:

- Love WW2 despite being born long after it finished.
- Support Reform
- Enjoy a good inspo quote like "There was never a night that could not be lightened by the sunshine of hope"
- Hate anyone who succeeds (except Nigel or Stephen).

If you use they/them to describe an artist, how do I know if this is a band or an individual?

No rage here - just confusion 😀

It`s just Jacob as far as I`m aware. I think they said in an interview they might shorten it to "cob", but I think that was a joke.

I think it shows how the algorithm judges you jake.

Perhaps it is a good indication that some self reflection is required. Perhaps you aren`t quite who you think you are. 😉

It`s the forced speech aspect of it. The reality is Jacob is a male and using gender neutral pronouns is seen as tacit acceptance of a delusion.

Name calling will not make them see 5 fingers.

No one is forcing you to call them anything. It just makes you look like a bit of a dck if you actively choose not to tbh.

Like I said, calling them names won`t work.

It will not persuade them to your point of view.

He`ll be telling us that age of consent laws are woke before long, Megyn Kelly and other MAGA are testing the waters on that narrative now.

Also, calling them names does work. They are snowflakes so they absolutely hate it, and whilst they lash out a bit at first, it gets them proper riled up for when they inevitably turn on each other.

Although, in the meantime, their whining is definitely annoying.

How`s living in 2018 working out for you Wotsit?

I think you know that calling them names won`t work and I know you or jake or other who start these types of threads are not trying to win hearts or mind.

These threads take a fairly standard formula.

Take a subject, pretty much ignore it and then criticise the social media posts of people who you perceive are political opponents.

I`m led to believe the endorphin release of virtue signalling can be quite powerful.

I like Jacob`s music, very heavily inspired by Rufus Wainwright.

Good to see a local artist getting recognition.

A `ladies top` Jake? What sort of bigoted, outdated thinking classes tops as being for men or women?! You`re clearly worse than Hitler.

I got the impression he was quoting what was said by some of the dinosaurs who were disparaging Jacob rather than using the term `ladies top` himself. Jacob`s album has some beautiful music. I looked for it in HMV Dunfermline but there was no sign of it there. HMV Edinburgh had it though.

Don`t ruin TOWKs top banter. Disappointing HMV Dunfermline didn`t have it. Hopefully it`s because it sold out.

My motive is to describe the world as I see it. I`m not interested in gaslighting others to my point of view, I prefer when folk form their own experience as long as it doesn`t negatively impact on others. I remember when that was about the only thing I agreed with folk on the right about.

If y`all don`t want to call people by their preferred pronouns then simply don`t do it, but other folk should be allowed to judge you for that, that is their right to self expression, and it is overly authoritarian to try to force them to respect you or refrain from mocking you using names, borrowed (with irony) from your movements earlier phases, when you do something they don`t appreciate.

Whine all you like, but please stop expecting people not to express their opinions about your actions.

I was not asking anyone to stop using words of their own choice, I was just exercising freedom of speech and commenting on it`s effectiveness.

I think it`s turtles all the way down from here Wotsit.

It does work though. The folk doing it aren`t trying to change your mind, that`s not possible.

You are delusional if you really believe that you, personally, are expressing anything. You are merely parroting what you are told from on high.

You are almost guaranteed to say nothing on a topic until the party line is formed and then, lo and behold, weeks later, you have a response to events ready to cut and paste from your propaganda website of choice.

No amount of rational discussion will stop you from doing that because you are not doing it from a rational place.

Incidentally, have you noticed that there`s only one topic (lots of people are saying that he is a paedophile apparently?) where Trump doesn`t threaten to sue everyone for a squillion gazillion dollars? Does it not niggle at you that he`s unwilling to face legal discovery or cross examination on that one thing that he`s adamant is a hoax?

If someone called me a paedophile In public I`d sue them right away. If Jeremy Vine can do it why can`t Trump?

I don`t think anyone can, in good faith, defend Trump or the hypocrisy of his supporters.
As for the pronouns thing. I simply don`t understand it. I mean that on a basic level but it`s not something that impacts my life so I don`t need to understand it.

Change my mind from what? I`ve actually not stated my views on pronuns, I just tried to answer jakes questions to why some people get riled up on them.

I`m starting to think that you believe I am some kind of political figure Wotsit?

Apart from accidentally attending a Lib Dem barbecue the most political thing I`ve ever done in my life is vote.

On the subject you seem so desperate to engage me in....when I have something to say, I`ll say it and people will hear it.

Well Wotsit did call it. "You are almost guaranteed to say nothing on a topic until the party line is formed and then, lo and behold, weeks later, you have a response to events ready to cut and paste from your propaganda website of choice."

I read that as a mealy-mouthed delaying tactic.

What was it you actually said again?

"The latest release trying to portray Trump as an abuser is a hoax."

Oh yeah, that was the gist of it, niggle and winge about tiny details whilst ignoring the bigger picture. Guiffre isn`t one of the people who accused Trump, you are right. A lot of peole say that she was probably too old for him.

"I think they tried to ensnare Trump and failed, if there was anything they would have already used it by now."

Uhuh?

The thing is that "both" sides are embroiled in this, Clinton is up to his neck just like Trump and many others, so it`s having to be forced out. That`s why it hasn`t been used until now, mutually assured destruction.

It`s genuinely disgusting.
