Massive outbreak of measles in some parts of England.People are wary of taking the vaccine to prevent this. I presume they are worried about the side effects.I don’t see the same out cry,about the side effects of the weight loss jags,and people are buying it without question. Small pox,and whooping cough,have all been almost irradicated,because of vaccines,so why are people avoiding preventative measures?

The vaccination rate for the impacted areas is around 65%. Around 95% is required for good immunity.
That might be a key issue.....

Im glad I’ve kept my daughter’s vaccines up to date. Would never forgive myself if she caught one of these diseases and came off badly when the vaccines used have been tried and tested for decades.
Some people do suffer side effects from them, it’s the chance you take, but you take a bigger risk crossing the road, getting behind the wheel or getting in a plane.
No doubt Labour will get the blame for it when it turns political as well.

40% of the Enfield population are foreign born.
Many of the countries of origin have lower vaccine rates than the UK.
Add into the mixture language barriers and lack of engagement with authorities of immigrants compared to the native population and the the reason for this outbreak is in fact due to both the reasons being discussed...or not on this thread.
I imagine there have been various attempts and initiatives to increase the vaccine rates amongst children and adults who`s vaccination window was not in the UK.
I wish the young people and adults suffering a speedy recovery, measles can be nasty.

Agree Dave, it is nervous when you agree for kids to get the jab, but that is mainly what it is. A fear of what may happen, but the converse is definitely true as measles WILL happen again and again. When measles comes around you definitely want your kids inoculated.

Enfield has one of the highest Romanian and Bulgarian immigrant population, with low vaccine rates (60% - 80%) in comparison to other nations and the WHO`s 95% target.
Roma people are largely disengaged from even the Bulgarian authorities so I imagine the rates of vaccination will be even lower in those populations.
I`m struggling to think of anything that would make the people of Enfield more vaccine skeptical due to MMR fear compared to other populations, that should be uniform over all of the population.

Romanians make up 1.4% of Enfield`s population, Bulgarians 1.6% and Roma 0.3%.
It could well be cultural though as it`s a fairly diverse place, but so are other areas that all have higher uptake than Enfield.

I remember a girl in my primary school died from measles, it really scared the rest of us because we didn`t realise how dangerous measles was, and we knew that we were all going to get it.
It was like a mild-ish flu for me when I did get it. Chickenpox was much worse, I was sick for weeks with that and still have a few scars from it over 40 years later.

When the wee one was still “brewing” I had one guy at my work sending me videos of this, that and the next thing and telling me never to take jags etc for her. Conspiracy theorists are out there and fear the numbers are increasing. Add to that how easily they could create misinformation with AI and it will soon be a minefield.
Although, maybe its the MMR thats caused her to have ADHD 🤔😂

The stuff that was around when our eldest was of the age was the Andrew Wakefield stuff.
Unfortunately the number of online mentalists with absolutely no scientific background get way more visibility as their messaging plays at the biggest human fears.
Unfortunately, the scientific approach of dealing with everything as stats vs the very personal impact it may have on individuals gives rise to some very unfortunate outcomes.
Unless the guy at work has a biology degree and properly understands stats I would be thanking him for caring and that`s about it!
