Celebrating his 100th birthday. 🤩

I’ve been watching the videos on the BBC news app. He most certainly doesn’t look his age!

I hope we can wrap him up in cotton wool to keep him going for another century.

I’ve loved his programmes from a young age. Bringing nature into our living rooms is an absolute joy.

You can watch : David Attenborough - 100 Years on Earth on the BBC iplayer

David Attenborough is an amazing guy, a true national treasure. I watched his programme about the Gorillas in Rwanda on Netflix last night, absolutely fantastic. I put my love of nature and wildlife down to him.

One thing that did really annoy me about his birthday tributes however was the main article on the BBC website about him turning 100 which was published on Friday, which had the headline "King and Queen lead tributes for David Attenborough`s 100th birthday". Three of the first four paragraphs were all about the king and queen then there was a little bit about David Attenborough himself, then there was more from Work-Shy William and his brother Harry. It`s nauseating the way the BBC tries to make everything about the royal family. You see it when someone dies, like "King leads tributes to actor Gene Hackman" it`s as if someone`s entire life`s work is reduced to a vehicle to make the royal family look good.

And, there I`ve just done something similar to this great thread!

David Attenborough is such an amazing man. He will leave an enduring legacy of nature programmes that celebrate our biodiversity, and are impossible to beat in terms of breadth and scope.

I remember being entranced by his programmes 60 years ago, and have enjoyed watching my children, and later my grandchildren, continue that interest.

Apart from the wonderful gorilla scenes in Rwanda and the thrilling shots of killer whales chasing seals, the abiding memory for me comes from Life on Earth, when he talks about a 24-hour clock showing the development of life on our planet, which he said was formed at 0000.

The first single-celled organisms came into existence about 0400, signalling the start of life on Earth. Gradually over the course of the day, plants, mosses and fungi developed on land, and sponges, corals and jellyfish in the sea. By mid-evening, we had insects, then fish, then reptiles and birds. And at about a minute to midnight, we had mammals, including humans.

In this simple but vivid illustration, David Attenborough placed into context precisely where we sit in the grand scheme of things. This was pure genius.
