Italian jeweller Mario Roggero (72) started a prison sentence of 14 years and 9 months yesterday. He was convicted of killing two robbers who entered his shop and injuring a third by shooting them with a pistol. The court ruled that self-defense did not apply in this case as the three men were fleeing down the street when Roggero shot them.
His lawyer told the court that the accused had been robbed multiple times before and was full of remorse. He has asked President Mattarella for a pardon, backed by several right-wing politicians, led by vice Premier, Matteo Salvini, pointing out that the Italian President has already pardoned the man who was responsible for the death of 30 migrants crossing the Mediterranean in his rubber dinghy.
As if this wasn`t enough, the families of the three robbers are now suing Roggero for compensation.....
Not your average Sunday League player.

Without knowing more details it`s difficult to comment on this case. The old fella might well have been exasperated by this happening again and losing his property but, going by the details given by GG, not sure you can condone shooting three men presumably in the back , as they run down the street.

Ok so having watched the video he`s been done bang to rights. No way he can claim self defence.
GG, I`m assuming that the relevance of the pardon given to the man who caused the death of the thirty migrants is that they were migrants and the jewel thieves were white Italians.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

I’ve not seen it - I don’t know anything about it but I usually agree with the point that if they’re already running away you can’t shoot them. Death to me isn’t a punishment that should be dished out for robbery.
I do kind of feel sorry for someone who at 72 has to put up with persistent robbery though. More should have been done to help him before it escalated to this level - however he can’t be shooting someone in the back.
Who has seen the video mentioned? Was there a shootout in the shop or did they grab the stuff and run and he followed them?

You can find the video on YouTube. Search Mario Rogerro. It`s not graphic. The shop owner or his staff were no longer in danger but I can`t tell if the robbers were armed. Looks like they were getting into a car when the old boy unloads on them.
Edit: watched it once more and they are armed, don`t know if it`s a replica or not. Little sympathy for the robbers but ultimately the law has to be enforced.

Can`t see any relevance to the guy who took the migrants across the Med, but some lawyers will try anything to influence the Court. And yes, the robbers were white Italians and the migrants were black Africans, including women and children.
The political climate in Italy is such that public sympathy is with the jeweller. While I understand that, you can`t shoot people as if they were grouse.
ETA. If this had happened in the US, you could bet your house that Trump would pardon Roggero and hail him as some kind of national hero. I don't think Roggero's age should be a consideration unless he is demonstrably senile.

If they were making off with his valuable property then it would be reasonable for him to try and prevent their escape IMO.
If they were fleeing empty handed then the use of a firearm is not justified.
That aspect (with other factors) undid Tony Martin`s self defence claim.

Having seen the video, I think the old boy is justified in taking them out the game. There probably needs to be more of this sort of thing, make people think twice about committing crime.
These feral kids that are attacking people at bus stations and hospitals, someone needs to give some of them a serious going over, and that needs to become the norm, to stamp it out. The police and the justice system offers no deterrent

I agree with this. The police constantly pick the lowest hanging fruit which at the moment seems to be words on the internet. Doesn’t help with behaviour in town/city centres or in housing estates etc
I don’t know about elsewhere but funding and policies are a huge problem in the UK. The people that actually work in the police largely do as good a job as they can.
