A lot of them are worked bloody hard Dave.
And they are a competitive bunch.... classmates very happy to stab each other in the back. The egos appear to be a big problem as they are all coming from being right at the top through all of their education and then quite a few of them realise that they aren`t just not top dog, but are struggling to keep up.
I can actually see why they might want some younger professors in as some of the academic staff can be absolutely ancient and they might have the experience, but the energy levels must be a challenge.

I think the basic issue is this.
The University seems to operate on a high trust system.
We no longer live in a high trust society.
"Normal" folk like us dot-netters know we no longer live in a high trust society and know his claims are ludicrous at first glance due to lived experience.

I think part of the problem though, like Wotsit alludes to, is that the notional leader of the free world continually lies and the poorly educated that he so loves and exploits lap it up. So if that is someone at the very top doing this then that is going to permeate through society.
Just last week you had Trump pulling a hissy because one of his district attorney`s refused to prosecute some guy on a bogus vandalism charge. Instead of just accepting that their was no basis to the charge Trump just tells more lies and unfortunately enough people lap it up. It`s one thing to be duped but when truth bends to power then we`re on the road to ruin. That`s a road we don`t want to be on because when people can`t tell potus that, "sir you`d didn`t get a birdie on that hole" then what else will they just agree with him on?

The BBC`s first 4 articles on this subject were hilariously bad, 2 of them got community noted and were "updated" frequently with a drip, drip of his ridiculous claims on each update.
They seemed more intent on attacking the work of Nathan Cofnas, who they accredited as exposing Arday as a fraud (it was actually author Simon Webb 3 years ago) than actually doing journalism.
Eventually they had to bring in researchers from other news departments because the ideologically captured hacks at the BBC "education" like Vicky Wong were incapable of covering this story.
The Guardian has covered this pretty well, but I think that`s because they are really pizzed off at being hoodwinked by Arday in previous coverage.

He was a plagiarist and if he`d stopped with his phd from Liverpool he`d have been fine, a decent career.

Indeed, the fact he took his own life is an absolute tragedy for the family he has left behind and the life he could of had.
However it doesn`t change the fact that you said he perpetrated a grift which by definition is to illicitly gain money or property. Now if you are correct in his motivation then the victim would have to be his employer who fell foul of his scam. Now whether his employer, Cambridge University, should have been more diligent in their vetting process is neither here nor there, they were still the victim. People get scammed everyday and it would often be preventable if they had exercised caution but therein lies the art of the scam. I don`t understand how you can say he was grifter and then expect the grifted to be blamed for for the tragedy that then unfolded.
Not sure what Andrew Windsor has to do with it unless Cambridge Uni is involved in any aftercare he has received.

Who wished him death? Nobody that I`ve heard or read and certainly not Cambridge University. I`m glad to hear you didn`t wish death on those that scammed you. If they were ever caught may I ask what level of aftercare you would have offered? I`m not bothered that you think he was a grifter, you`re maybe right, and you`re certainly right that nothing said on this forum has any consequence or effect on any real world event. I don`t have to make that judgement, Cambridge Uni already did.
"Cambridge University stated: “We also fully recognise that there is a person at the centre of this situation, and we continue to provide support to him.”
That`s what they said, irrespective of whether you, I or they think it was merited, they promised it.
Arday`s fall was spectacular in a very short period of time.
For my scammers getting caught is an occupational hazzard, Arday lost everything, job, colleagues, James O`Brien, reputation all at once.

I`m no medic Dandy, but I suspect he had some significant mental health issues.
It seems a wee bit inconsistent to have a go at someone for having issues with the justification that he faked a story about having other issues.
Terribly sad story for all involved and impacted. I`m sure we all agree on that, at least.

I really feel for his family. It’s the absolute worst when someone decides to take their own life.
I also have to say though that perhaps pandering to someone who told so many lies has lead up to him taking his own life. Perhaps the nonsense he was talking was an indication of his mental state, it wasn’t an indication of how strong he was to come through so much blah blah blah that we were told, it wasn’t. He should never have been put into the position he was in.

The more I read, the more it seems like he was a fantasist. The worrying thing is we have similar fantasists in positions of power.

I believe he was a fantasist as well but it should have been nipped in the bud well and truly early on.
Nobody can tell me that the university weren’t aware of this but were too scared to act because of how it would look.
They might have done him a favour actually instead of leaving it this long that his lies were so long, he had no way out without total disgrace and ultimately suicide.
It is very very sad what happened .

I know someone very similar (white, in case it matters). The problem is people get so used to the lies that they just nod and go along with it. The lies magically become truths. I`m the only person who ever calls out this person`s bullshit but even I`ve stopped as I just get told I`m being unfair and to leave them be and I suspect the fantasy is to protect them from reality.

Nah, just extremely fatigued by certain behaviours over and over again and not afraid to say it, throw your labels around, they`re so over used they don`t mean anything anymore, chuck in Extreme Right, transphobe (i believe women`s toilets should be exactly that) while you`re at it.
