 Fastest Footballer...
Topic Originator: GG Riva
Date:   Mon 25 Mar 14:54

The thread about the Blue Brazil got me thinking about the S. American version, that managed to beat the Three Lions at Wembley on Saturday. Vinicius Jnr. almost made Kyle Walker look one paced. šŸ™‚ Three questions for the dotnet anoraks;

1. Is Vinicius Jnr the fastest footballer still playing?

2. Who is thought to be the fastest footballer ever?

3. Who is the fastest Pars player ever? (I can think of a few contenders.)

1. Not sure - but Micky Van de Ven at Spurs is ludicrously fast. I`d back him in a footrace v Walker. I think Walker was carrying a bit of an injury v Brazil, so I wouldn`t place much emphasis on that drill. Martinelli at Arsenal is also lightning quick - especially when carrying the ball.

2. As above - Given the advances in sports science/conditioning etc. I`d say that that today`s fastest players are probably the fastest ever. I`ve no evidence for that though. That said - the original Ronaldo, pre injuries, was absurdly quick

3. Simon Wiles was super fast - but I don`t remember much of him other than his lightning speed.

Whilst on the subject.....

Kane Ritchie-Hosler has a running technique that looks almost casual at times but is deceptively fast. I think more than one full-back has been fooled by it.

Wasn`t Malcolm Macdonald pretty quick back in the day?

George McNeill was fast - gave up football for athletics in the days when the Olympics were still notionally amateur.

Kenny Thomson is the name that sprung to mind when mentioning Pars players.

I think Aaron Labonte was marked as,the fastest during JC`s time at the club. I reckon Burchill will be up there too and I wouldn`t be shocked if currently Comrie is the fastest (pre injury). Honorable mentions for Freddy Daquin and Chris McGroarty.

Theo Walcott surely has to be mentioned? And perhaps Michael Owen?

KT was one of three ex-Pars that sprang to my mind. I think he won the Powderhall Sprint, perhaps more than once. He was a regular at EEP before Covid but haven`t seen him since. I`m fairly sure some dotnetters will be pals of his. Maybe one of them can help?

Mbappe and Haaland are very quick in their full flow. Vini Jnr absolutely Kyle Walker a couple of years back at club level to show his true pace!

The best ones are the ones that can sprint, then slow their pace to draw a defender, then go again at the click of a button. Leaving defenders on their heels is a great look, and Messi used to sit people down constantly.

There was a Dane who played in England in the noughties called Dennis Rommedahl who was unofficially crowned fastest in the premier league at the time.

Fastest Iā€™ve seen in the flesh has to be Didier Agathe. Seem to remember him playing for Rovers before moving up the way, possibly via Hibs to Celtic?

The 3rd supersonic Par I had in mind was a winger in the 60s.

As a slight aside, I`d say we have more pace in our current squad than we have had for some time. Edwards, Todd, Jakubiak, O`Halloran and KRH can all show a clean pair of heels given the chance. MFW has a deceptive, loping style but also covers the ground quickly.

MFW was a sprint champion at youth level we`ve probably not seen him leave 2nd gear, there was a through ball against utd when he was a stride behind the striker and 2 seconds later was first to the ball,

Signing him must be priority number 1 for the board imo

I`m surprised no senior Pars fan has had a stab at my teaser about a flying Pars winger from the 60s. Sammer would have named him in a flash, but he hasn`t posted on here for a couple of months or so. I hope he`s OK. Jackie Sinclair ?

I mind Mark Williams debut at EEP - he went through the opposition defence like a flash, what a first 45 minutes - not bad in the second half either.

He was a PTI in the Royal Navy at HMS Caledonia and had to get permission to turn out for the Pars, presumably as an amateur.

He actually approached the club with a request for a trial - not sure why he faded away, possibly his duties interfered ?

It was Jackie Sinclair I was thinking of, well done, VEE. I remember him almost single-handedly destroying Rangers before being transferred to Leicester City. Jim Gillespe was a good shout, Cross Par. I think he arrived at the end of that decade. He fits in nicely with Mark Williams and Mark Smith in that he was sometimes too fast for his own good and the ball would be left behind. šŸ˜€

Players of that ilk need to have the ball played well in front of them rather than to their feet, so that they can easily outrun their opponents.

From Sunday Post - Many would nominate Arthur Duncan.
The Hibsā€™ winger was nicknamed ā€œNijinskyā€ andā€œThe Flying Scotsmanā€ because of his incredible speed down the wing. But he couldnā€™t beat a defender from Fife. For two consecutive years, Kenny Thomson of Dunfermline was o!cially crowned as Scotlandā€™s speediest player.
He believes his pace helped him have a 22-year career.
He recalls: ā€œIn 1975 they held the Scottish ProfessionalFootballersā€™SprintCham- pionship.
ā€œI think we may have had run- o"s to see who was quickest at the club before I was nominated to take part.
ā€œI beat Arthur Duncan over the 75- yard dash with a time of 8.65 seconds.
ā€œThe following year we ran in front of 12,000 people at Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh as part of an athletics meeting.
ā€œPeople had come to see David Hemery in the hurdles and Scotlandā€™s George McNeill took part in a professional sprint race.ā€
As well as Arthur Duncan, Kenny ( right) was up against Peter Marinello (Motherwell), Paul Wilson (Celtic), Rab Prentice (Hearts) and Jim Denny (Rangers).
He again triumphed and collected the Ā£200 first prize.
ā€œI was quite confident of winning because Iā€™d taken part in a race at Selkirk the week before and won Ā£ 300,ā€ says Kenny. ā€œQuite a few local businessmen won a few quid by having a bet on me.
ā€œRunning in the event at Meadowbank was a great thrill.ā€ Kennyā€™s speed was clearly in the genes. He reveals: ā€œMy dad was a professional sprinter before the War. He was one of the favourites to win the famous Powderhall New Year Sprint but had to go o" to fight.
ā€œHe was a prisoner of war for five years and didnā€™t have the same speed when he came back.
ā€œBu t he used to coach me and his Dunfermline United team won the Under-16 Scottish Cup.
ā€œMy dad would give me a training regime to follow during the summer which certainly made pre-season a bit easier.
ā€œHaving that speed helped me when I became a professional player.
ā€œI wouldnā€™t say I was the greatest tackler but I could always catch my opponent if they tried to knock the ball past me. ā€œI was never quick enough to consider a switch to athletics.
ā€œAllan Wells could give me a 10 yard start and still beat me.ā€
