Thanks Brian and co.

First goal unfortunate but second we should be defending better.

My laddie's view of Paul Allan`s free kick.

That free kick looked virtually unsaveable. Standing behind the goals yesterday it was noticeable how much the ball sometimes deviated in flight even from a straightforward goalie`s kick-out which can`t make it easy for goalies dealing with shots and crosses.

It was good to see Otoo get a goal. I don`t think he shoots often enough and this might encourage him. Kane deserved his goal as a previous attempt had come back off the bar and fallen nicely for an Arbroath player to clear but this time the ball fell kindly for us.

Their first goal seemed to be the result of a wicked corner which evaded a posse of players before landing at the back post for an unmarked player to convert. The second one was untidy but they had the same man in the same place to take advantage.

The editor saved Jakubiak`s blushes by not showing his miss but McCann could have made the closing stages more comfortable by converting that one-on-one with Gaston.

Wee eck, the goalie was far too close to his left post. I think if he had been a couple of yards over, he might have got there ?

He might not have seen the ball if that had been his starting position, Raymie. I was surprised how much height Allan got on the ball to clear the wall and how much it dipped before entering the net; superb technique in my opinion.

Had a feeling he`d get it on target when he lined up. Had a good body language somehow.

It always surprises me how far to one side the goalies stand. Most teams have players capable of getting it up and over. They should take a more central stance, imo

Agreed Raymie. I will never understand goalies who leave gaps to one side when free kicks are in obvious striking distance.

You guys have rewritten the coaching manual for goalies facing free-kicks from just outside the box. The conventional wisdom has always been that the wall has the main responsibility for protecting one half of the goal and the goalie for the other half. That`s why they don`t take up a central position presumably. Any goalies or goalie coaches on here who can advise?

Great thanks. It did occur to me afterwards that you could do that but in the Android app it just shows up as another link. I take it it works in browsers.

If that was Arbroath who scored that free kick I`d be questioning the keeper to be fair he seems to be way too far over to the other side. I can`t remember seeing a free kick scored by hitting it away from the wall?

c'mon the pars

I don`t think the keeper is at fault there. The starting position looks OK and it basically gives the player taking the kick two options - get it over the wall and in at the post or go to the keeper`s side and hope he takes a step the other way. If the keeper stands in the middle of the goal, there probably isn`t much point in having a wall. The aim is to make it as hard as possible to score by minimising the area that cannot be covered. Paul Allan got it right in that small area, by putting it so close to the post.

I had a feeling he was scoring as well, and muttered it to myself as he was about to hit it. Strangely, I did the same thing with the one Lewis McCann scored at Hampden and haven`t had that feeling any other time this season. I think it was just the body shape in the run up - both times it just looked perfect.

Yes, but you are not taking into account that players practice free kicks and have the ability to negate the wall. The game has moved on and the balls are different too

If the game has moved on why hasn`t goalies` technique changed with it? No offence, Raymie, but I`d like to hear a specialist`s opinion on the subject.

The setup for the free kick is fine. Aim for the GK is too setup a wall to protect 1 side of the goal whilst he protects the other. The success rate is surprisingly low. I played in goals for years and always setup this way. If the player manages to get it up and down fair play not much can be done. I would question the dive to try and save however, he doesn’t exactly fling himself full stretch to try and stop it

Thanks for your input, par-4-life. I presume you mean the success rate for the kickers is surprisingly low? Certainly I haven`t seen many successful ones for the Pars over the years. Allan`s deliveries from corners are generally first-class too.

SKY did a thing regarding this with Ipswich. Easily 20+ years aglo and i think from memory it was Martin Reuser who was popping them in like Juninho and Beckham.

They followed him at training and he was firing them in as usual then they did an experiment and removed the defensive wall completely; it was like someone had put him under a spell. Couldn`t judge the power and lost all perception of distance as he had no wall to visualise getting it `up and down`. Shame i can`t find it online as it was fascinating.

The issue with that is that the player is thrown off in the aftermath of the change.

If they went back 2 weeks later, having practiced with no wall, he`d likely have been pinging them in the top corner 9 times out of 10.

I love it when we go sell Kevin Nisbet,
He's gonna pay for everyone this season.

As I said in my post earlier, for keepers facing a direct free kick in obvious striking distance. My reckoning is even with a wall, it should be placed to give the keeper protection on one side but still have a view from central. As Raymie said with the changes in movement and the ball these days it’s still a lottery. And to wee ecks point about wanting informed opinion here regarding technical aspects of football, this is the wrong place to come πŸ˜‚
