Disappointing not to see Kane involved. But important to get him a 100% fit for the cup and league campaign.

We have to be realistic. The bench actually has five first team squad members, albeit a few of them are young. We can only use five subs. When Kane and Todd are fit then we will have more options, but as sure as night follows day there will be one or two others injured I am sure. It’s time to see what some of these young lads can do. T Sutherland and A Tod in particular. I am confident that they will be at least as good as some established first teamers.

What’s wrong with Kane? Didn’t think he finished the season injured? Are we going to end up having to nurse him through this season and just hopewe get 20+ games?

Thank god we managed to get wotherspoon looking at that team, real lack of cutting edge or attacking threat when KRH isn’t playing.

Looking at that team/bench with the injuries we have it’s going to be a long season again….Missing Kane but 1 player doesn’t make a team. The missing OHalleron is just stealing a wage every week… an embarrassment to have signed him on a 2 year deal.
No way do we have a team for top 4 finish…

I think it had been said that he wouldn`t take part in friendlies and nurse him through the first couple of weeks in order to keep him fresh and injury free for the league cup games.

Geez, so to keep him injury free the best solution seems to be not to play him? He must have a weakness from previous injuries etc which has a decent chance of recurring if put under strain.

We’re going to have to pick and choose the games he can play all season by the sound of it, better hope there’s no fixture pile up.

2 year contract feels a bit of a punt then too. Here’s hoping if he plays he scores, as there’s nothing much to replace him if he gets an injury and we are not going to be a creative free scoring team under mcpake.

However, McPake has revealed Kane’s absence is all part of a personal plan for the 29-year-old.

The marksman suffered a nightmare spell with St Johnstone with knee and calf injuries, leading to the two short-term deals he penned with the Perth club last season.

McPake explained: “With Chris, it’s been load management more than anything.

“We knew this when we signed him, that to get him as many games as we can and fully-fit all season, we’ve had a plan that we’re working on.

“Ideally, yes, he would play every pre-season friendly. But there’s not many players who can do that.

“Hence the reason we’re 45 minutes with some of them and you bed them in.

“We’re taking a different approach with Chris. He was desperate to play against Cove and he’s getting fed up just training all the time with no games at the end.

“But he’ll be okay for the Premier Sports Cup starting.”

Keeper came on at half time and looked decent enough.

Left back came in later and has a wicked delivery with the left foot.

Downside is it looks like hammy pulled his hammy in the last minute as game was stopped early.

A game where the youngsters outperformed what we’d expect our first team lineup on Saturday to be.

Taylor Sutherland has got to be up there for a starting spot over McCann on the preseason showings.

The keeper looked good. Made the saves he needed to, was quick of his line at one moment and nice turn and pass, looks good with his feet aswell and comfortable on the ball. I wouldn’t be opposed to see him challenge Mehmet.

Left back has a cracking passing range and corner delivery, both keeper and left back trialists would be good players to add to the squad.

Aye about 30/35 yards out, like some kind of sweeper keeper. Looks comfortable with the ball at his feet and distribution was good.

Couple of time win first half Deniz played some dangerous passes and gifted a few opportunities to Dundee, thankfully they never took them.

Also is there any need to respond like that.

Not point loosing our minds over friendly games. Saturday onwards is when I will reserve judgement. We are going down etc. Why put yourself through in going to games if that’s your mindset.

Let’s see how we do Saturday. I’m hopeful tbh.

It`s a bit worrying we sign kane who missed a good few games for us last season and this has continued into this season already. Considering we seem to be ( going by DM interview) going with a small squad again this year. Can we really afford to have a guy who has a history of missing games ?

I agree, got to question the wisdom of giving a guy a 2 year contract who can’t take part in pre season proper. Really hope it works out 🏁🏁

The reality is they can come out with all the statements and interviews they like about the club but it’s the results that matter.

If it’s another relegation fight McPake will be under massive pressure. Can we afford another relegation?

Taylor Sutherland looks like he has a big future with us. He has looked the part and will only get better with experience.

The same problem exists in that we do not score enough goals. Mcpake sticking with MOH, Wighton and McCann may come back to haunt him should we get off to a poor start. The competitive matches over the next couple of weeks will give us a benchmark of where we are.
Are we going to challenge for the title??? Honestly I just don’t see it….

Wotherspoon has zero and I mean zero pace

What do you mean by zero pace?

Zero as in none, nada, his legs have gone.

He is as slow as a week in the Jail.

The brain will still be there if he stays fit and people do his running for him it might work but I have have sever reservations.

Not every good player is blessed with pace. Plenty examples of that over the years. If Wotherspoon had pace he wouldn`t be here.

What I’ve noticed the last couple of games is that McCann actually makes some brilliant runs throughout the match but no one is brave enough to make that pass, in the second half there was one in particular Hamilton got the ball and McCann was bursting away through the middle and the through ball was on but Hamilton passed it backwards and then held his hand up to apologies to MCann acknowledging he had seen the run.

I know he gets some flack McCann but if he’s making the runs you’d expect but the ball isn’t getting made what else is he supposed to do?

This was a constant theme throughout the game, we always look for the safe pass. We really need players to start being brave and supplying our strikers when they are making the runs.

That`s a critique I have of Scottish football as a whole right now. It sounds cliche but be braver passing forward, you don`t score playing 5 yard square passes at the back.

Ep.17 of East End Tales is out now with Andrius Skerla

The worst instances of that are when outfield players decide nothing is `on` so pass the ball (and the buck) back to the keeper.

Ahoy ahoy that’s doesn’t mean an awful lot, McCann is a much better player when he doesn’t have the ball.

It’s looking like we won’t be able to offload the likes of MOH so it will be more of the same next season to what we just watched with maybe half the games being a wee bit better as Kane might be fit.

After the injury crisis we’ve just had to sign a guy who can’t do a preseason is worrying. We’re setting ourselves up a bit here.

With Todd out it’s all on wotherspoon as the only real creator in the team, unless KRH comes onto a game.

Im not sure if that Was Dundees first team, but on the whole i thought we showed up really well against them, the difference being their ability to take the two set piece chances.

I was really encouraged by the performance when the young lads come on in the second half especially. Maybe Dundee were not pushing so hard by that time but some of the senior players should be looking behind their back as we looked far more dangerous going forward in that period of time. Tod, and Taylor Sutherland in particular always catch the eye and the others didn`t look out of place.

With the exception of Matty being injured, all the injuries we had last year are behind us and and those players have had a chance to recover properly now. im really hopeful we will surprise a few with where we will end up this year with the combination of experience and youth we now have.

I dont think Todd is a creator as such, no a No.10, not that great on the ball or picking it up back to goal with a defender up his bum.

Todd`s strenth IMO is running beyond the strikers, getting on the end of things and finishing

When folk compare this year`s squad with last year`s they seem to disregard the likelihood that young players like Tod and Sutherland will improve with experience. We pay lip service to the idea of having a youth development scheme but are reluctant to acknowledge that the best of these guys are an integral part of the squad. Other clubs have been doing that for years.

Ahoy, they arent good enough to see the pass, never mind play it.

Wotherspoon was apparently brought in to be that creator in the final third we have been missing, well unless the overall style and the personnel behind him changes, its a pointless signing.

You can already see a familiar pattern playing out already.

We are going to suffer due to lack of chances created and/or not taking the chances that are created.

Same thing for the last 3 seasons. We’ve brought Kane in but how many game dos he actually going to be available for?

Were then left with Wighton, McCann and Sutherland.

You could probably add wighton into the same category as kane how many games will they miss. I`d like to see more of Sutherland as he looks a danger probably not any worse at the minute than any of the other strikers in the squad.

Wighton`s op was intended to clear up the issues that have bothered him for the past two seasons was it not? Injuries are inevitable in a contact sport. They don`t necessarily mean the victim is `injury prone`.

I would say looking at players careers as a whole, you see many that play around 500 games, and others that might manage far less than that due to the amount of injuries they have. Probably not their fault and down to an element of luck as well but I would say some players are physically stronger and fitter than others and manage to stay clear of injuries, while others are injury prone

Reading the match report we conceded 2 goals from set plays. I really hope we improve on that front as we conceded a lot of goals from the same situations last season.

Some can manage the full season without injury some can`t due to being injury prone. If you get a fairly nasty leg break for example that will never fully recover so you see these guys are more likely to miss games due to injury over players who haven`t had this injury.

KRH suffered three separate unconnected impact injuries last season. Does that mean he is `injury prone`? What`s the solution - don`t sign players who have suffered injuries?

Only time will tell. How many players do you hear that could have made it if they didn`t get a bad injury so to try and dismiss players are injury prone is bizarre.

On to the second question I`d say it`s a big risk signing a player who is more likely to miss games due to injury when we had the season we did last year regarding injuries. Add in we are playing with a smaller squad confirmed by Dave McKay in his post match interview it adds more doubt than assurance he will play over 95 percent of our games. It`s a massive risk also giving kane a multi year contract off the bat when he missed a fair few games on a 6 month loan last season. Every transfer is a risk but adding in the injury issues and considering he`s already injured without playing a game doesn`t show he is over his injury issues unfortunately.

I`m not disputing that some players are injury prone, I just don`t think it`s that easy to anticipate which ones are.

Certain types of injury seem more prevalent now and others less so. I don`t remember ACL injuries being so common when I started watching football whereas leg breaks, which don`t seem so frequent now, happened more often and had the potential to end careers. Medical science has obviously moved on and conditioning and treatment improved.

Re Kane I presume he underwent the usual medical checks and it seems a special pre-season programme was devised for him. Time will tell if it pays off.

Kane played 10 out of 14 games for us - including all of the last 7, which coincided with us returning to one game per week.

We`ve signed him on a 2-year deal, so it`s hardly OTT for a 29 year old with over 300 senior appearances.

Doesn`t guarantee anything, but based on his track record and the difference he made to us, it seems reasonable.

Imagine we offered him a year and then he signed for Falkirk because a longer deal was on offer...

I love it when we go sell Kevin Nisbet,
He's gonna pay for everyone this season.
