 Spain v England
Topic Originator: GG Riva
Date:   Sun 14 Jul 18:14

I thought it might be a good idea to start a dedicated thread for the Euro24 final, rather than continue with Parboiled`s, which is rather narrower.

Few would argue that Spain have produced some of the best football of the tournament, even if they were a tad fortunate to scrape past Germany and they were out on their feet during the last 20 mins v France. By contrast, England have been largely lucky, cautious, dull and uninspiring, even if they improved considerably against the Dutch.

Will England`s luck hold for one more game, or will make their superior class tell?

Spain for me based on current form.

Most pressing question is what channel to watch. I think I might watch BBC for the game and ITV for half time. I wish Sam Matterface and Rio were on the same channel.

BBC: Guy Mowbray with Shearer on comms. Rio, Micah Richards, and Juan Mata in the studio.

ITV: Sam Matterface, Lee Dixon, Ally McCoist on comms. Neville, Keane, Mendieta, and Ian Wright in the studio.

Why ITV ditched Clive Tyldesley for Sam Matterface is a mystery.

Spain would be the most worthy winners, they’ve been by far the best team and had the hardest route to the final.

On that basis…it’s going home isn’t it.

If Williams and Yamal could find their way out of the back pocket`s of Walker and Shaw then Spain might have a chance. As it is the Spanish are going to lose this because for all their possession they have never looked likely to score.

The best team in the tournament doesn`t always win it but Spain are the most worthy winners of the Euros, well, since they won it in 2012. Spain will rightly be the favourites for the world cup in North America in two years time. A joy to watch when they are in full flow.

England made a decent game of it, but not even their most fanatical supporter can deny that Spain were worthy winners. It`s hard to escape the conclusion that those players often trumpeted as "world class" by the media have been clearly overhyped. Even without their midfield talisman, Rodri, in the second half, Spain proved to be too good for them. Even after England equalised, I felt confident Spain would find a winner.

You have to wonder if it`s ever coming home as successive "golden generations" keep coming up short......

Are players like Bellingham and Foden as good as they are cracked up to be? They seem to me to flit in and out of games rather than dominate them. Is it maybe because, at their clubs, they are consistently playing with better players than when they are playing for England?

bellingham looked dead on his feet. Foden was poor. England managed to turn all the momentum in their favour with the equaliser but didnt go for it and bring in Gallagher/Gordon who could have brought even more freshness/energy.

Spain showed how to control possession and how to change tempo going into attack (something scotland couldnt do)

Think that`s a bit harsh. You could level that accusation at many players who have enjoyed success at clubs but haven`t then replicated that success at international level. John McGinn didn`t perform very well at these euros yet he had a very good season for Villa. Were those good performances for Villa just down to being surrounded by better players than he has when he pulls on a Scotland jersey? Bernardo Silva plays for Man City on the opposite wing to Foden. Silva didn`t have a particularly good euros but we`ve seen him play incredibly well for City over the past few seasons. Or has he not played incredibly well for City and it`s just that he`s surrounded by top players and being coached by one of the all time greats at his club?
Just my opinion but I think that the top English players would be the top players for any other nation in the world if they were eligible for them.

A lot of England`s bigger names were disappointing.

Kane, Foden, Bellingham and even Saka although he looked a lot better in the last couple of games.

I`d say their best two players overall were Guedhi and Rice - a centre back and a holding midfielder - which pretty much sums up Southgate`s defensive approach.

One difference is that their clubs play more on the front foot, rather than opening up and attacking once they are behind or to win a game in the last 10 minutes.

When Harry Kane played in these Euros England were almost playing the Craig Levein 4-6-0. Must be difficult as a midfielder to play a forward ball or have any space at all without anyone making runs ahead for an out ball or just to pull defenders around.

I believe if you asked all the world class managers to pick a nation to manage for that tournament.

The top answers would be spain and England, that squad is phenomenal, and it is scary to think the likes of grealish and rashford were left at home.

A manager like klopp with his style would`ve won the euros with England at a canter.

Throughout the tournament England looked good when they went behind and started attacking teams. When they drew level they went on the defensive again. They had so many lucky breaks and were one of the worst teams to watch.
Hyped up by the media, worse than Ally McLeod team of 78.

Let`s be honest, England did well to get to the final in the first place. Whilst a good team, they had a fairly easy ride of it. They were "found out" because Spain had to battle past better teams and were therefore the better team in the final. Whilst you can only beat what`s in front of you, England weren`t convincing in their games.

As daft as it sounds, being the winner of a game doesn`t necessarily mean you were the better team and you can quickly get "found out". See our past season for an example! I just hope Falkirk get the same result this season (their fans think they`ll win the league because they beat Dundee Utd 😂).

They were hardly found out against Spain. They both gave each other an honest game. I would understand this view if Spain romped away with it last night, but they never.

Spain, however, looked to be the side with the most attacking intent and the fault for that lies with Southgate.

Based on FIFA rankings and converting into
domestic positions England`s results over 90
minutes would have been

Spurs 1 Preston 0
Spurs 1 Leicester 1

domestic positions England`s results over 90
minutes would have been

Spurs 1 Preston 0
Spurs 1 Leicester 1
Spurs O Exeter 0
Spurs 1 Portsmouth 1
Spurs 1 Burnley 1
Spurs 2 Newcastle 1
Spurs 1 Man Utd 2

Pardon me for being a birdbrain, but I don`t have a clue what you are on about.

Anyhoo, am I right in saying that Spain was unbeaten in the entire competition, including qualifiers, except by one team?
Who was that now?

"Pardon me for being a birdbrain, but I don`t have a clue what you are on about."

If you replace FIFA rankings with English league placings for last season then you have

Man City = Argentina
Arsenal = France
Liverpool = Belgium
Aston Villa = Brazil
SPURS = ENGLAND
And so on down the ladder.

So England (Spurs equivalent) beat or drew with teams well below them in the rankings and then lost to a team just below them.
