 Portugal v Scotland
Topic Originator: wee eck

Scotland are unchanged from the Poland game; Portugal have benched Ronaldo.

Portugal: Costa, Semedo, Dias, Silva, Mendes, Fernandes, Palhinha, Silva, Neto, Leao, Jota.

Scotland: Gunn, Ralston, Hanley, McKenna, Robertson, Gilmour, McLean, Christie, McTominay, McGinn, Dykes.

Same team. Some managers just don’t like to change. Different opponents. Different challenge.

McKenna doing really well at the back, lots of good interceptions and blocks, Gunn made a coue of good saves, and obviously the goal, but we have been so bad... Every time they come down their left, it should have been a goal. As above, McGinn almost a passenger, McTominay and Dykes have done well when it reaches them, but its going to be a long 45 mins...

Any credit for the performance or just lazy sarcastic pointless drivel?

Really tough shift for the guys. Portugal have top quality throughout the team and bench that is a few levels above us but I thought we competed well.

This is a very tough section, feasible we could end up pointless.

Done ok for the most part of what I seen, but Gunn has to save that and McKenna sold himself to let Ronaldo in 🤦🏻‍♂️ could have been 3/4 more for Portugal though.

Clarkes time has ran its course I feel - could’ve gotten away with that result if we had won v Poland, but we blew the important game of these 2…..too little, too late for me.

When you consider what the expectations were before this game it was hardly a `failure` to lose 1-2. I liked the way we came back into the game after they equalised. Against a team like that it`s inevitable they`re going to make chances and you just hope they won`t take them all.

As said the other night Mclean shouldn`t be near that team !
Punished again for switching off , Gunn probably could have done better with the first goal but certainly made up for it but unfortunately to no avail !
defended too deep as usual , and tonight we are the only team in the group without a point !
McGinn was just a waste of a jersey tonight again seem to have lost his mojo just now
Bottom line is we give teams too many late goals
We need to get more fresh blood in that team also
Clarke needs to see if anyone that isn`t getting picked for England has a granny from Scotland and tap them
To be honest I was expecting to get scudded tonight so 2-1 doesn;t seem so bad

As much as Gunn shouldve saved the first, he more than made up for it with 3 or 4 great saves. But he seems to struggle to anticipate the long shot, double stamps his feet before moving and its that split second that has lost us a goal each game this week...

It`s all relative though, isn`t it?

The end of a campaign we`d already qualified from, 3 games at a major championship, and then 2 games in the top tier of European football.

We are where we are. We`re not good enough to compete at this level without 3 guaranteed starters - Tierney, Hickey and McGregor. We`ve never had strength in depth, and while Thursday was a major disappointment, tonight was a good performance.

I meant another loss to a late goal. Going out of groups on goal difference. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
That kind of failure

In terms of tonight, they defended doggedly. Scored a great goal and had something to hang on to, but we were second best against a much better outfit. Didn’t expect anything else at kick off

We had one good move in the first half but apart from that the ball was like a hot potato and we couldn`t keep possession. I think it was 16 shots to 1 at half-time. I thought bringing on Ronaldo actually helped us as they were well on top in the first half.

In terms of late goals, in our last 6 games, we have conceded in the 85th minute or later, in 5 of those.
That tends to suggest an error or lack of concentration? That would certainly apply to Poland and Portugal.

Gulf in quality was there for all too see. There were moments where Scotland managed to get out of defense to release McTominay, but these were few and far between. Gunn made some decent saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

The penalty against Poland should 100% not have happened at the international level.

The lapse of concentration last night can be attributed to being under constant exhaustive pressure for the whole game, last nights is forgivable,

The polish one not so.

The second goal you could see coming a mile off. Before Morgan came on surely he was told they are crossing in from deep all day on your side stop the cross at all costs but he ends up being nowhere near where he should be in comes the cross and Ronaldo sticks it home.

The higher you go the slimmer the margin for errors becomes. We have found that out the hard way. We were hardly a failure or crap as previously mentioned as we were still in the game. Again fine margins with 2 individual errors costing us again.

c'mon the pars

First half was quite good. Great ball in from the much maligned McLean and a simple header from Scott McGoalmachine. While they had a lot of the ball, I wasn`t that worried. Second half started off like the alamo, Portugal were quicker and we sat deeper. After the equaliser (it took a deflection I think but neither commentator mentioned it? Although Gunn should have saved it) we had a few moments where we looked like we could get joy on the break. But when Dykes went off and when we didn`t bring Doak on to use his pace on the counter we retreated once more and it was terrible defending by McKenna for the winner. Could have easily had 4 points already and an honest to God chance of getting into the quarter finals but instead, individual errors have cost us and it`s likely we`ll be down in League B next time round with jobbers like "Finland" and "England". Also could affect our world cup chances depending on how they allocate seedings, and we have no chance of a play off through the Nations League.

As with all our games recently - the midfield looks OK (although I don`t know what`s up with McGinn - he`s a shadow of the player he was 18 months ago); the attack looks limited and the defence looks constantly shaky and in `panic` model.

If you look at last nights back 4..

Gunn - made some great saves, but also should have saved Portugal`s equaliser; it seems that every game he`s letting in a saveable shot, and when we struggle to score that`s a big problem.

Ralston - Leao had him on toast all night. Was struggling all match.

McKenna - Our best defender I think, made a couple of good blocks.

Hanley - Panic inducing, slow and immobile. I can`t believe he`s the best we have.

Robertson - so much less effective than for liverpool (which is explainable given the calibre of the respective team mates).

Every decent team is gonna look at that back 4, and run at them. Poland and Portugal did so, and we couldn`t hold out.

We are over promoted, the nations league has been brilliant for us but no one expected us to reach tier 1. Simple fact is we are not a tier 1 nation, we are the equivalent of the present Pars squad being promoted to the premier league - we can hope to pick up the occasional point here and there but we (should) know where we are.

Clarke is not going anywhere so stop banging that drum as it’s really boring.

This was a very decent performance (v the team ranked 8th best in the world) after some really poor performances but this thread is 90 % negativity - typical moaning fifers

Well - I never knew that.

`quickest` - can be a deceptive term, because top speed and acceleration are different types of `quick`. I remember that there was one season where a 34 year old Phil Jagielka was the quickest player in the Premiership in that he had the highest recorded top speed, although he was never, ever, considered to be a quick player.

I wonder if Hanley has a high top speed but takes an age to get there, giving the illusion that he`s slow?

Said before the 1st Nations league campaign began that, while it would be good to win the groups due to the reward of the play offs, getting promoted to Section A could be disastrous for countries like us. Wales found that out last campaign.

Totally, but he is getting a free ride from the press. Compare that to the end of McLeish`s reign, where they hounded him out of the job

There`s just something not sitting right with me how he got away without so much as a single comment to the press after the Euros. He then got asked 1 question about it recently and bit the guys head off saying no-one cares about the Euros anymore.
