Anyway, Young and Fogarty start (good). Wotherspoon in for Cooper (bizarre). Looks like a 4-2-3-1.
Oluwayemi; Comrie, Fogarty, Young, Ngwenya; Hamilton, Otoo; Ritchie-Hosler, Wotherspoon, McCann; Kane.
Subs: Mehmet, Chalmers, Breen, Fisher, Wighton, O`Halloran, Sutherland, Cooper, A Tod.

Rugby tackle just outside the box in a dangerous area, always going to be a red there. Wasn`t too many complaints from their end either.
Should have been ahead before then tbh, Kane should be hitting the target with the header I think. The worry will be if we can`t get a goal and we start to panic a bit and let them into the game... really need one before half time I think.

Started off brilliant but we have no cutting edge in the final third. Need to make more positive passes as we’ve failed to notice wide players often in plenty of space. Hopefully we can test them a bit more in the second half. The big fear is we give them one chance and they make the most of it.

Simple in theory; get the ball out wide early and stretch them with a man less. Unfortunately our wide players are totally ineffective and their fullbacks aren`t under much pressure.

They better be telling them in there to up the tempo with the passes and pass them to death.
Once we went a man up, the tempo dropped.
It`s almost as if the mentality has treated the red card as a goal.

Huge deflection but we`ll take it.
My pet hate on show again tonight - chance to get the ball wide with one quick pass is on but we have to go centre back - midfield - other centre back - midfield - full back then up the line. Time we do that the defence is set and the space is gone.

Massive slice of luck with that goal, couldn’t see where a goal was coming from up till then.
McCann and hosler ineffective again, raith have a makeshift full back and McCann is doing the defenders work for him.
We still need more quality on the wings if we’re not going to be struggling all season.

Delighted for the squad, there`s been so much negativity around the club and what a great way to get a first league win and putting to an end that embarrassing record from last year.
All the players worked their socks off and thoroughly deserved the win. Great goal by Spoony and glad to see Otoo keeps having a go at the edge of the box.
Mentions for Oluwayemi, Young and Foggarty who all looked really composed for such young players.
Josh Cooper is a really positive addition and with Todd coming back soon it starts to look like we can look to push on a bit more

Great to beat them finally even if we did have a wee slice of luck with the deflected goal.
Someone above said the weakest link in the team now is left back. I disagree , thought. Ngwenya played ok.
The weakest link for me is out wide. We badly need a winger because at the moment we don’t, not one that can beat a man anyway. Get behind and get decent crossed in and maybe our strikers will score more.
Keeper, Fogarty, Young were stand outs and Cooper did very well when he came on. Otto likes to have a crack at goal and long may it continue but I lost count of the times he lost possession.
If we can find the dosh for one more player…a wide man and with Todd due back soon then hopefully we will start to climb the table. Still a lot of improvement needed but confidence is a big thing in football and tonight’s result will certainly help in that case.
What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

I think there is always room for improvement but what a result, the boys gave 100% every single one of them, little bit more quality in the final third and we could actually build something here, but i hope the boys are celebrating tonight
Also want to shoutout wotherspoons movement tonight, he really showed why he has been playing at the top level for so long

Fantastic performance and the first time in a long time we have never looked in danger of conceding. Young and Fogarty were solid in defence and Wotherspoon had his best game by far in a Pars strip. Hopefully we can build on this and give a decent Partick team a challenge next week.
We look so much better without three at the back and the wing backs. Is it a coincidence that we scrapped this formation since the Germans decided to sell up? Either way we look much better and hopefully it can continue. I would still love to see us bring in another attacking player, midfielder and full back for cover.

McCann had a free kick attempt in the first half that was like a pub team effort - and in the second half he had a great opportunity to run at the defender and walked straight into him.
Cooper came on and was more direct using the ball in his first minute than McCann had been for most of the game - and then he set up Wotherspoon`s goal.
McCann is inconsistent and erratic.

Been a big sceptic of McPake and co recently, but willing to give them some slack after tonight. Yes the sending off helped, but we looked a lot better than recent games Ive been at. Only issue still being the centre mids slowing it down too much (Hamilton mainly) and I still dont see what KRH is bringing to the table - only once tried to do a 36 year old down the line and made an absolute dogs dinner of it.
Kane led the line well and Wighton done his bit when brought on - hes just got zero pace to him. Dont think McCann or Ngwenya were that bad at all tonight.
The big change though was in goal and at CB - sorry but Bene must now be struggling to get back in as I think that pair strolled it tonight even when Hamilton joined the game for them.
The important bit now is to push on with this win! COYP!

Great performance from Kane, really is head and shoulders above anything else we have when it comes to game intelligence. Thought the centre backs were brilliant aswell, never looked troubled the whole game, especially Young, outstanding performance for an 18 year old. However, McCann and Ngwenya looked like they had won a competition to get a game. McCann won a couple headers in the first half, but his decision making is absolutely woeful.

Anyone on this thread who says that was a soft red card must have been watching the game with navy blue specs on and have been under the influence of lino fumes. Watching it from the Norrie it was a clear scoring opportunity denied by a hefty shove in the back. And when I got home and saw it on TV, Michael Stewart said red card with no hesitation.

I thought the two centre backs were great, looked like they had played together for years. Be interesting to see how they get on against Brian Graham next week.
Thought Kane pressed their defence really well and that set the tone for the rest of team. He also has that knack of winning fouls to get the team up the park. Just waiting for him to start adding the goals, hopefully that’ll come with more games.
Otoo will be some player if he starts finding the target more often with his shooting.
I’d start Cooper next week over KRH, thought he looked promising again.
And Wotherspoon showed his class with his finish.

What a win. McPake deserves credit for guiding us through a difficult spell and getting the team to deliver. Didn`t get to see the game because of the time difference and was at work (sadly) but was getting live alerts/messages from friends and family. Somehow being overseas doesn`t do anything to quell the anxiety/nerves for a big game. All about us tonight. Love the squad and the clear bond they have.
I don`t understand Raith Rovers and the obvious over-engineering their board are doing. Clearly a decent team going through a bit of a self-inflicted implosion. I think (?) they`ll be fine but could they randomly be on the cusp of having a Peter Grant season. If they lose at home to Hamilton next weekend (which I don`t expect) they could be in full on spiral mode. It`s struck me previously that Andy Barrowman (who I think is a good man) might be over-promoted in the role he`s currently serving in. Will be interesting to watch.

I wasn`t able to make the game as I am on holiday outside the UK. It sounds like a good team performance overall. It`s good to see we scored twice. One may have been a deflection, but you have to get the shot off to score. More goals come from defensive errors than moments of brilliance, I suspect. They all count. You still have to beat 10 men as well. At times, that can work against you. From the highlights on Raith's website, David Wotherspoon took his goal really well, I thought.
A great result and confidence builder. It also shows you what can be achieved when the fans get behind the team.
My mate, who is neutral up from England went to the game. Said there was some good football and it was a good game.

I was watching Young and thinking we have a player we will struggle to keep. He seems to be on an upward trajectory. Good luck to the lad.

You could tell McPake had the team well geared up for this match. The early tempo was pacey, passing much improved, defence solid and midfield creative.
McCaan was a little inconsistent with his crosses but he has brought strength to his game and won a few battles. I did like his cut-in solo effort on goal. It was Cardle`esque and it was not far away from being a great goal. Hopefully he will continue to improve.
My one gripe is that after the initial hight tempo, we get the goal and seemed to take our foot of the gas for a good ten minutes when we should have driven home the advantage. I was glad that this was soon rectified and the second goal was the result.
Spoony`s goal was brilliantly taken and gave everyone a lift. You could tell he really enjoyed that one as most around him did.
For me it was a Red Card all day long. He was beaten with pace, heading towards goal and pushed from behind. Ref had a good game and called it correctly.
Playing ten men can be tough and the team did well to break them down and score two.
All in all it was a very entertaining match. The team played well together, were creative, linked great passes, had quite a few decent shots/headers on goal and showed great strength. Onwards and upwards

That was a very important 3 points, but as some posters have alluded, the performance was even more important. The players will be buzzing at training next week as their confidence will have received a massive boost.
We shouldn`t over emphasise the significance of Murray`s red card, although it clearly was a factor. Some folk will argue that it`s harder to play against 10 men than 11, but that`s clearly nonsense. Otherwise, teams would start with 10. There is a grain of truth in that assertion, though, as teams that go down to 10 men often abandon any attacking intent and sit in to play for a point. Once they concede, though, they are highly vulnerable if they come out to play further up the pitch.
Not your average Sunday League player.

Thought Kane looked very sharp last night, much fitter and showed a wee bit of pace to get behind for the red card.
Generally we looked fitter then them and certainly looked like we out worked them. You sometimes need the breaks and we certainly got that with a massive deflection to break the deadlock.
Still look a bit toothless on both wings and lacked that midfielder who got up to support Kane but it was solid enough performance where our keeper was rarely troubled.
Hopefully can follow it up with at least a draw at Partick, try and get some momentum and hopefully another player or 2 through the door this week.

Finally a league win, finally a win over our dear neighbours and finally a clean sheet in the league. :) Can`t really complain!
Oluwayemi, Fogarty and Cooper have certainly added some quality as well as quantity to the squad. Sam Young has done very well so far also since breaking into the team.
There is still quite a room for improvement with our attacking play, if we can add a winger, ideally left footed we should be more dangerous, especially when Matty Todd comes back.
KRH`s form has not been great, but if McPake won`t use Cooper out wide, then hard to see who he plays wide right. It will be interesting to see what he does once Todd, Wotherspoon and Cooper are all fit - can`t play 3 number 10s, and playing 2 in behind isn`t an option with a back 4 really. Comrie and Ngwenya are much more comfortable as full backs. I`d still like to see more flexibility with the 3 attacking midfielders switching positions more often during games - give them more freedom James! Also I`d have Sutherland as my first change instead of Wighton on what I`ve seen this season, also gives us some pace in behind, which you would think would be most useful in the last 15/20 minutes of games.

A high standard has been reached, and that level of performance should be the aim, although with a young squad there’ll be some inconsistency.
Hoped before the game to see a performance, and thought that was more important than 3 points.. However..
A great start, high tempo which got the crowd behind them. A clear red card, and delighted with the goals. Couldn’t care less about the deflection, we deserved the breakthrough. How many times do we dominate but then get punished when we fail to score?
An excellent team performance, no failures including the 3 subs. Looking forward to the Jags next week.

A draw at Partick? They got humped by Alloa last week and not going well. Surely we must be looking for 3 points?

Great performance all round. Starting so brightly with the aggressive high press really sets the tone and gets the crowd lifted and behind the team from the first whistle.
Was worried at us not scoring in first half having had so much of the ball but nice wee bit of fortune with the deflection. Still think we look weak in wide positions although looked a lot more effective after KRH went off and McCann switched onto the right.

Just watching the game again (recorded it) and the "nudge " by Stevenson on Comrie is ridiculous!

One thing that hasn`t really been mentioned much is how impressive the attendance was considering it was on the telly. Must have been in excess of five thousand pars fans there. Great backing too. SNW were outstanding.

I`ve noticed a few posts where folk are saying we are weak out wide . I noticed countless occasions last night , where our wide players were in acres of space signalling for the ball . By the time we had passed it 3 or 4 times across the back , the wide players were covered .
Surely, we should be trying to get them involved before they are closed down .

Yes Stevenson was very lucky the referee didn`t have a better view and the linesman was on the opposite side. Whilst he wanted to clatter into him, I am pretty sure he didn`t intend to make contact with his elbow in the face - but he did and was lucky not to sent off.

Parsweep it would defo help them but if they can’t beat a man and put a decent cross in then it won’t help that much.
KRH has lost the ability to beat his man so the angles for the cross is always deeper but can deliver a decent ball (the chance for Kane) and McCann cuts in and either, runs into the defender, crosses blind to the opposition or shoots off target.
Oh for someone with a yard of pace who can get to the bye line and put a good cross in. When Todd comes back I’d like to see cooper on the left cutting in as fancy there’s he’s likely to pick a pass or shoot on target.

Anyone who can consistently beat their man and put a decent cross in will be playing at a higher level than us.

If Bene comes straight back in … that’s a kick in the hawmaws for Young and Fogarty. Hamilton, Wotherspoon or Chalmers are fine captain material.
Chalmers?
Eh?

Berkey, most people would agree that the ability to beat a man is desirable and we`ve had a few players capable of it over the years. But Andy Robertson has one of the highest assist rates in the EPL and you will almost never see him take a man on. KRH got a few crosses in last night, at least 1 more or less from the byline.
I watched some of the game back today and it was interesting to hear Stewart encouraging McCann to drive at defenders more.

The only player I`ve seen in our league who can consistently beat a man and get a cross in is Fitzpatrick at Partick - great wee player.
